Find your Ascendant
The calculation uses the same ephemeris that computes the birth chart on this site, and it is valid for anyone born between 1900 and 2100. The city is looked up in a public map service that receives only its name; the date and time go only to our server, which stores nothing.

Careful: your Ascendant is very close to a change of sign, and the Ascendant changes in about two hours. If the time of birth is off by a few minutes, the sign could be the neighboring one. The birth certificate usually has the right time.

Calculating…
This page answers from 1900 to 2100, and the date you entered is outside that range.
Above the Arctic Circle the Ascendant has no single value over the course of a day. Choose a city farther south.

The Ascendant can be read as the door of the chart: the degree of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and in the place where you were born. It is a point, and neither a planet nor an extra sign, and the whole chart starts being told from it. To find it you need three pieces of data: the date, the time and the city of birth.
The history of this point is in the very name of the discipline. In Hellenistic astrology, the Greek word horoskopos, “the one who watches the hour,” designated precisely the sign and degree that were being born on the horizon; only later did it come to name the whole chart, and later still the newspaper column. While the Sun takes a month to change sign and the Moon takes two and a half days, the Ascendant changes in about two hours. It is the part of the chart that depends most on the clock, together with the twelve houses, which are counted from it. That is why finding it takes more than a date, and why many people stop halfway through the form.
The Earth turns one degree every four minutes. Fifteen minutes of error in the time shift the Ascendant by three to five degrees, depending on which sign was rising; a whole hour shifts it by thirteen to twenty, which is half a sign or more. A chart made with a guessed time ends up describing another sky, and with it another life.
The city comes in for a reason almost nobody explains: the speed at which each sign rises depends on latitude. The twelve signs do not take two hours each. “Two hours” is the average of twenty-four divided by twelve, and reality is far less round. In São Paulo, with today’s obliquity, each sign takes this long to cross the horizon: Aries takes 2 h 12 min; Taurus, 2 h 16 min; Gemini, 2 h 15 min; Cancer, 2 h 02 min; Leo, 1 h 43 min; Virgo, 1 h 31 min; Libra, 1 h 31 min; Scorpio, 1 h 43 min; Sagittarius, 2 h 02 min; Capricorn, 2 h 15 min; Aquarius, 2 h 16 min; and Pisces, 2 h 12 min. Taurus takes 2 h 16 min and Virgo takes 1 h 31 min: forty-five minutes of difference between the slowest and the fastest. Being born with Virgo rising gives a much narrower window than being born with Taurus, and that changes how much an uncertain time gets in the way.
And the list changes from place to place. In Porto Alegre the gap widens even further (1 h 24 min against 2 h 21 min); in Manaus, almost on the equator, it nearly disappears (1 h 48 min against 2 h 09 min). In Lisbon, in the northern hemisphere, the order reverses: there the slowest is Leo, at 2 h 30 min, and the fastest is Pisces, at 1 h 14 min. The same sky, read from another latitude, rises at another pace.
To find your Ascendant there are three steps, and only the first is any work. Find the time: it is usually on the birth certificate, the second copy has the field, and it is almost always filled in. If it is not, look in the card or booklet from the maternity ward, and then in the hospital archive, which in many places keeps records for decades. If nothing turns up, the page on not knowing your birth time tells you what can still be done. Then find the city: the one where you were born, and not the one where you live today, because what matters is the latitude and longitude of the place where you were at that moment. Finally, calculate. With date, time and city the Ascendant comes out in seconds, together with the whole chart, free on this site and in under a minute.
The semiotics of the Ascendant is the semiotics of the threshold. It is the door: the way others meet you before they know you, and also the filter through which you meet the world. It rules house 1, the house of the body, appearance, initiative and the start of anything, and so it tends to show in the way you walk, the kind of clothes you wear, the first sentence said in a new room. With Capricorn rising, the arrival may be contained, read as serious before a single word; with Leo rising, the arrival may take up space even without meaning to. There is a piece that comes with it and that almost every text forgets: the ruler of the Ascendant, the planet that owns the rising sign. Where it landed in the chart helps you understand where your life unfolds. That whole series exists on the blog, in The chart ruler in the 12 houses.
A very widespread reading calls the Ascendant a “social mask.” The image can help at the start, and it has a cost: a mask suggests a true face hidden behind it, and someone pretending. A different way to investigate is to think that the Ascendant is as much yours as the Sun is, with another function. The Sun points to where life grows; the Ascendant, to where it comes in and goes out. A Sun in Pisces with a Virgo Ascendant can be read as someone who organizes the world in order to dream inside it, with no disguise at all. The discomfort many people feel between the two may be the ordinary distance between what you want to build and the way you arrive.
What human question lives in this door? The one about how we are seen and how we want to be found. Augustine wrote, in the Confessions: “I became a question to myself.” The Ascendant is usually the part of us that others recognize first, and for that very reason it may be the part we know least how to describe. Donald Winnicott, in The Maturational Processes and the Facilitating Environment, wrote: “It is a joy to be hidden, and disaster not to be found.” Perhaps the door exists for this: so that someone can, in fact, find us.
There is a tension here worth investigating. If the first impression we make is as much ours as everything else, can we accept it without feeling that it betrays us? And if people describe you by your Ascendant and you describe yourself by your Sun, can we hear both descriptions without choosing just one as the true one?
If you want to read your door more slowly, the Personality and essence reads the Ascendant together with the Sun and the Moon, the reading Magnetism and beauty is devoted to the body, presence and first impression, and the Complete birth chart follows the ruler of the Ascendant through the houses.
If you also want to know your Moon, you can use the Moon calculator, which asks for the same three pieces of data.
The question that remains is: how do people describe you in the first week of getting to know you, and what in that description do you recognize as yours?
A few questions that tend to come up about the Ascendant:
Does the rising sign really change every two hours? Two hours is the average. The real figure depends on latitude: in São Paulo, Taurus takes 2h16 to rise and Virgo takes 1h31, a difference of forty-five minutes. In Lisbon the order reverses, with Leo taking 2h30 and Pisces 1h14. That is why the city of birth goes into the calculation along with the time.
Can I know my rising sign without my birth time? Not with confidence. Without the time of birth, the Ascendant could be in any of the twelve signs, and a single answer would be a guess dressed up as a result. What exists are ways to narrow down the doubt, such as rectification, which starts from dated facts of your life; that is consultation work, and a form cannot do it.
What is the difference between the rising sign and the Sun sign? They are different pieces. The Sun sign is the direction of your life and comes from the date. The Ascendant is the degree rising on the horizon at the instant of birth, and it comes from the date, the time and the city. The first says where you grow; the second, how you arrive.
I got the time wrong by fifteen minutes. Does that change anything? It shifts the Ascendant by three to five degrees, depending on which sign was rising. That almost never changes the sign, but it moves the cusps of the twelve houses, and a moved cusp can put any nearby planet in a different house. For the sign of the Ascendant, fifteen minutes are usually harmless. For the houses, they are not.
Is the rising sign more important than the Sun sign? Neither one is more important. The Ascendant is usually easier for others to recognize: people describe you by your Ascendant and you describe yourself by your Sun, which is where the feeling comes from that other people do not see who you are.
In short, the Ascendant is the degree that was rising on the horizon when you were born, the door through which life comes in and goes out. It asks for date, time and city, changes sign every 1 h 31 min to 2 h 16 min depending on the sign and the latitude, and is as much yours as the Sun is, with another function.
