Retrograde motion is an illusion of perspective, and it has had a name since antiquity: apparent motion. No body in the solar system reverses. What happens is that the Earth and the other planet travel in orbits of different sizes, and on certain stretches we overtake it, or are overtaken. Seen from here, it appears to move back against the background of stars.

It is the same thing that happens on the motorway. You overtake a lorry at a hundred and, for a few seconds, it seems to move backwards through the window. The lorry is still doing eighty, forwards. The one who changed position was you.

This matters for a reason that is not technical: if the planet does not really move back, nothing “stops” or “returns” in the sky. What changes is the angle we look from, and what astrology reads there is a change of PHASE in the cycle, not a breakdown.

How long each planet spends retrograde is the figure that almost never shows up, and it changes the whole conversation. Measured across 96 years of ephemerides, from 1930 to 2025:

Mercury is retrograde 19% of the time, in 3.16 periods a year of 22 days each; Venus, 7%, in 0.63 a year of 42 days; Mars, 9%, in 0.47 a year of 74 days; Jupiter, 30%, in 0.92 a year of 120 days; Saturn, 37%, in 0.97 a year of 138 days; Uranus, 41%, in 0.99 a year of 151 days; Neptune, 44%, in 0.99 a year of 161 days; and Pluto, 43%, in 0.99 a year of 160 days.

Neptune spends forty-four per cent of the time retrograde. Pluto, forty-three. Uranus, forty-one. If retrograde motion were a curse, almost half of human life would be cursed, and always the same half, for everyone, at the same time.

The serious reading follows from that on its own: the slower the planet, the more of the time it spends retrograde, and the less that says about any particular day. A retrograde Neptune is the normal state of almost half the days on the calendar. Calling that a warning is like calling nightfall a warning.

The Sun and the Moon never go retrograde. They are the only two that always move forwards as seen from Earth, and that is why no serious text talks about a “retrograde Moon”.

Mercury is retrograde 19% of the time: that is 3.16 periods a year, of about 22 days each. In other words: roughly one day in every five of your life was lived with Mercury retrograde, including the best ones.

That figure alone dismantles the most common use made of it. If one day in five is a Mercury retrograde day, then one in five signed contracts, good trips, conversations that went well and reconciliations was too. Memory keeps the email that vanished and forgets the four that arrived.

What tradition actually associates with the period is more modest and more useful: it is a phase of review. The prefix “re” organises the list, revisit, revise, resume, reconnect, redo. It is not that arranging something new goes wrong; it is that attention pays off more on what already exists. Someone who uses those twenty-two days to finish what was half-done comes out of them better than someone who spends three weeks afraid to buy a phone.

And there is the effect nobody measures and everybody feels: knowing that Mercury is retrograde changes your behaviour. A forewarned person rereads the contract, confirms the address, saves the file twice. A good part of what gets attributed to the sky in those weeks is attention itself moving, and that is not a small thing, it is just a different thing.

A retrograde planet in your chart is not a transit: it is a fixed trait, for life. And it is common. With the proportions above, most people are born with at least one retrograde planet, and many are born with three or four, the slow ones, almost always.

The classical reading is one of inward direction. The planet works, and it works from the inside out: someone born with Mercury retrograde tends to think first and speak afterwards, and sometimes finds out what they think while writing. Someone with Venus retrograde tends to take longer to know whether they like something, and to revise their criteria for what they find beautiful. It is not a defect, it is a rhythm.

And the same caveat as the signs of the slow planets applies: a retrograde Neptune in your chart belongs to your generation, not to you. With 44% of the time spent retrograde, almost half the people born in any year have it. What individualises it is the house it fell into and its conversation with the rest of the chart.

With a retrograde period, three things pay off, and none of them is putting life on hold.

Finish what is half-done. It is the most direct use of the “re”: the stalled project, the unfinished conversation, the text still in draft. The phase favours whoever comes back.

Reread before you sign. Not because the sky is going to sabotage the contract, but because rereading is always good and these weeks give you the excuse you were missing.

Do not postpone an important decision because of it. Twenty-two days, three times a year, is two months of life a year. Anyone who organises their diary around Mercury loses more time than any vanished email would cost.
