Your date falls on a change of sign. The Sun entered {para} on {quando}, anyone born before that instant is a {de}, and anyone born after is a {para}.
This page answers from 1900 to 2100, and the date you entered is outside that range.
If you were born in another country, change the zone below before comparing it with your birth time.
Finding your sign from your date can be read as the first step of an investigation: the date answers which sign the Sun was in when you were born, and only that. It is true information and it is little: one twelfth of humanity was born in the same band as you, and nobody imagines they know half a billion people because of it. Still it is worth knowing, and worth knowing precisely, because the answer that circulates out there is wrong in one case out of ten, and always wrong on the same dates.
What the date does not answer is the rest of the chart. The Moon spends about two and a half days in each sign and changes about twelve times a month, so on about twelve days out of every thirty it is the time that decides its sign; the Ascendant changes every two hours and also depends on the city; the twelve houses come from the Ascendant and so do not exist without a time and a place. With just the date, you have the Sun, and the Sun is one piece out of ten.
The story of “my sign” is the story of a simplification. In the tradition that reaches us through Ptolemy, the zodiac is divided into twelve equal slices of 30 degrees starting from the March equinox, and each sign has an element, a modality and a ruler. The Sun was always one piece among others; it was the newspaper column of the twentieth century that made it everyone’s sign, because it was the only piece that the date was enough to know. That history is told in the history of the horoscope.
The table of signs you have already seen is wrong because it assumes the change happens on the same day every year. The Sun enters Aries at the instant of the equinox, and that instant moves: each year it arrives about six hours later than the year before, until the leap year pushes it back a day. The twelve borders do the same dance, and the result is that none of them falls on a fixed day. An example you can check: every printed table says Sagittarius begins on 22 November. For someone born in São Paulo on 22 November 1995, at three in the afternoon, the table said Sagittarius all their life, and the Sun was in Scorpio. That year the Sun only entered Sagittarius at 5:01 pm, and the country was on summer time, which changes the calculation by one more hour. The birth fell on this side of the line by two hours.
That is what the tool at the top of this page does differently: it has no table of dates. It has the 2,436 instants at which the Sun changes sign between 1900 and 2100, calculated one by one with the same ephemeris the site uses to build charts, and checked against the equinoxes and solstices, which are exactly four of those changes.
The real ranges, measured for anyone born between 1930 and 2025, are these: Aries, from 20 or 21 March to 18, 19 or 20 April; Taurus, from 19, 20 or 21 April to 19, 20 or 21 May; Gemini, from 20, 21 or 22 May to 19, 20 or 21 June; Cancer, from 20, 21 or 22 June to 21 or 22 July; Leo, from 22 or 23 July to 21, 22 or 23 August; Virgo, from 22, 23 or 24 August to 21, 22 or 23 September; Libra, from 22, 23 or 24 September to 21, 22 or 23 October; Scorpio, from 22, 23 or 24 October to 20, 21 or 22 November; Sagittarius, from 21, 22 or 23 November to 20 or 21 December; Capricorn, from 21 or 22 December to 18, 19 or 20 January; Aquarius, from 19, 20 or 21 January to 17 or 18 February; and Pisces, from 18 or 19 February to 19 or 20 March. Notice that no sign has a fixed date. That is why a border day is settled by the time of birth, and by no table.
The Sun can be read as the project of a life: where you grow when nobody is giving orders. Mood, way of talking and first impression have other owners in the chart; the Sun speaks of direction. That is why the Sun sign usually describes an adult life better than a childhood: it is the piece you earn. At twenty, many of us are still living the Moon, what came from home, and the Sun arrives later, by choice. And it describes the how more than the where. Two Suns in Leo can lead lives that look nothing alike: one in house 6, spending its brilliance on a daily craft; another in house 10, spending the same brilliance in a public position. The sign is the same and the life is not.
What human question lives in “what is my sign”? Perhaps the wish to be recognized through a word, to fit into a name that others understand. Schopenhauer wrote, in the Parerga and Paralipomena: “Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world.” The Sun sign can work like that: a true window that we sometimes take for the whole house. And Lao Tzu, in the Tao Te Ching, reminded us: “Those who know others are wise; those who know themselves are enlightened.” The sign is the start of a conversation with yourself, and the rest of the chart is where that conversation continues.
Reading only the Sun sign is reading one letter of a name. The chart has ten bodies, twelve houses, an Ascendant and the aspects among all of it, and it is the combination that describes someone. Two charts with the same Sun can behave in opposite ways at the dinner table. A Sun in Libra with Mars in Aries can be the most diplomatic person in the room and the one who fights worst when they finally fight; the same Sun in Libra with Mars in Pisces may leave the conflict before it begins. The Sun sign does not separate the two; the chart does. That is why the magazine horoscope sounds vague: it is written for one twelfth of the population, and a single piece says little.
There is a tension here worth investigating. If we recognize ourselves in our sign, can we still notice what in us escapes it? And if we do not recognize ourselves, can we ask what the rest of the chart says, instead of concluding that none of it applies?
The text about your Sun sign is in its name, in the list of ranges above, and it is the natural next step: it describes the direction of your life with the detail that a one-sentence answer cannot reach. After it, two paths are worth taking. The first is the Moon through the 12 signs, the piece that describes what you feel before you think, and that many people recognize faster than the Sun itself. To find out which sign it was in when you were born, use the Moon calculator. The second is the Ascendant through the 12 signs, how you arrive before you open your mouth; the rising sign calculator tells you which one is yours. Both ask for the time of birth, and that is where the date alone reaches the end of what it can say.
If you want to go beyond the sign, the Basic birth chart reads the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant together, the reading Personality and essence is devoted to building the self from these three points, and the Complete birth chart reads the whole chart, piece by piece.
The question that remains is: what in you does your sign explain well, and what does it leave out?
A few questions that tend to come up about finding your sign from your date:
I was born on the day the sign changed. How do I find mine? With the time. The tool at the top of this page tells you the exact instant the Sun changed sign on that day, in the time zone you choose: if you were born before that moment, the Sun was in the previous sign. On a border day the answer depends on the time, and an answer without it would be a guess.
Does my sign change from one year to the next? Yours never changes: it was fixed at the moment you were born. What changes from year to year is the date on which each sign begins. Being born on 20 April can give Aries in one year and Taurus in another, and both answers are right for those two births.
Do I need my birth time to know my Sun sign? On 93 out of every 100 dates, no: the Sun spends about thirty days in each sign, and the answer is the same in any time zone on the planet. On the other 7, yes: those are the days when the change happens, and on them the time decides. The tool on this page only asks for the time when it really makes a difference.
Are there thirteen signs? What about Ophiuchus? No, and the confusion has a simple explanation. The zodiac that Western astrology uses divides the circle into twelve equal slices of 30 degrees starting from the equinox, without following the constellations. Ophiuchus is a constellation, and constellations come in irregular sizes: they are a different thing, with a different purpose. The twelve signs work as a measure of time, and the constellations as a drawing in the sky.
What is the difference between my sign, my rising sign and my Moon sign? They are three different pieces of the same chart. The Sun sign is the direction of your life and comes from the date. The Moon sign is what you feel before you think, changes every two and a half days and needs the time. The Ascendant is how you arrive, changes every two hours and needs the time and the city. When the three get mixed up, astrology seems to contradict itself, and it is only talking about different things.
In short, the date of birth answers the Sun sign, and only that: the time comes in on the days of change, which no fixed table settles, and the tool on this page answers from 1900 to 2100 with the calculated instants. The Sun can be read as the direction of life, one piece out of ten, and the Moon, the Ascendant and the houses ask for the time and the city.

The Sun sign is one piece out of ten. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days, the Ascendant every two hours, and the twelve houses come out of the Ascendant, none of the three comes from the date alone. You can calculate the whole chart for free here.
