In practice, it is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the instant you were born. It is not a mask in the sense of a disguise, it is a way of coming in. It governs the first impression, the posture, the body's rhythm and the automatic reaction to new people.

And there are two things almost no text explains. The first: the Ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours, and it depends on the city where you were born. With no time and no place there is no Ascendant, none at all, not even an approximate one. The second: it is the Ascendant that defines where each of the twelve houses begins, that is, in what area of life each planet in your chart is going to land.
