The 7th house is the house of the other. It shows how you relate face to face, whom you marry, partner with or make an agreement with, and also what you tend to see in people without noticing it is yours. In the birth chart it begins at the Descendant, the point exactly opposite the Ascendant, and so it works as the mirror of the 1st house.
Think of someone who, in every partnership, ends up being the one who organizes everything and wonders why the partners always seem disorganized. Or someone who repeatedly falls in love with the same type of person and thinks it is a coincidence. It is in this territory that the 7th house asks for an investigation: what happens when there is someone on the other side of the table, and what that someone gives back to us.
The word house comes from the Latin domus, and the astrologers who divided the sky into twelve sectors from the horizon called each of them a place. The seventh received the name of setting, because it is there that the stars go down. The Hellenistic tradition linked it to marriage, to partnerships and to open enemies, the people we face head-on and not from behind the scenes. There is a useful image in that choice: at the point where the sky vanishes from your field of view begins the territory of whoever stands on the side opposite to yours.
The 7th house is an angular house, like houses 1, 4 and 10. They are the ones that mark the four cardinal points of the chart, and traditional astrology reads them as the most visible, those in which things happen in public and leave a mark. Its opposite is the 1st house, the house of the self. The oldest symbolic association is with Libra and Venus: the scales, the agreement, the beauty built between two people. This is a reading of symbols, and it does not mean Libra is in your 7th house. The sign at its beginning depends on your chart, and the planet that rules that sign, the ruler of the 7th house, is one of the most useful clues for reading what it holds.
Carl Gustav Jung wrote in Modern Man in Search of a Soul: “The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.” The sentence works well as a question for the 7th house. What changes in you when someone truly enters your life? And who are you when you are facing the other, without the audience you usually have alone?
There is an idea from depth psychology that goes with this house: what delights or irritates us most in others tends to say something about us. Since the 7th house is the opposite point of the 1st house, it is the place in the chart where that question can be asked calmly. What quality do you admire in people and have not yet allowed yourself? What behavior in others drives you up the wall and perhaps has a version of yours, hidden? It is a hypothesis to investigate with curiosity.
The themes that tend to appear here are marriage and civil partnership, serious dating, partnerships and contracts, the relationship with those who serve or hire you, such as the therapist, the lawyer and the client, and also the adversary who stands in front of you. In more intimate language, the 7th house speaks of what you look for in whoever you choose, of what you repeat, of what you yield and of what you demand. Someone with Saturn in the 7th house may have few relationships, and long ones. With Venus in house 7, harmony as a couple can be a central subject. With Mars in the 7th house, the relationship may have more open argument and more courage to say what one wants. None of this decides your life: these are paths of reading, for you to look at with curiosity.
The 7th house shares the territory of bonds with other houses, and separating them helps with reading. The 7th house is the other you choose, with whom you make a commitment or enter an agreement in the sight of everyone. The 5th house is romance and pleasure, the courtship that begins lightly. The 8th house is what is shared when intimacy advances, such as assets, secrets and vulnerability. The 11th house is friendships and groups, and the 12th house holds the adversaries and the bonds that do not show. Reading the 7th house together with these neighbors avoids attributing to it what belongs to another.
To know which is your 7th house, the chart needs your time of birth. Without it houses do not exist, and a chart that shows houses without asking for the time is making that part up. That is why we ask for the birth certificate, and there is a whole text about the case of those who say I do not know what time I was born. With the time, the address of the 7th house is easy to find: locate the Ascendant, look at the point exactly opposite it, and there begins the 7th house, which extends to the start of the 8th house.
There is a difference that tends to cause doubt. In the whole-sign house system, the 7th house coincides with the sign opposite the Ascendant's, from beginning to end. In systems such as Placidus, the house may begin in the middle of a sign and occupy parts of two. Neither is the only correct one, and it is worth knowing which one your chart is using before comparing what you read here with what you see in your drawing.
With the chart in hand, it is worth asking three questions. Which sign is at the beginning of the 7th house? Which planets live in it? And where is its ruler? Imagine the 7th house begins in Capricorn: the ruler is Saturn, and if Saturn is in the 2nd house, the other and money may walk together in your story, whether in a partnership or in a relationship where the bills take up space. If the house begins in Aries, the ruler is Mars, and if it is in the 10th house, life as a couple may blend with the career. These combinations are hypotheses of reading, and the whole chart confirms or corrects them.
A 7th house with no planets is not a life without relationships. Astrology reads an empty house through the sign at its beginning and through its ruler, and every chart has empty houses. What changes is where the conversation happens: instead of the planets saying what goes on there, the subject is settled somewhere else in the chart, where the ruler points.
A house on its own does not tell you how you love or whom you will end up with. This text speaks about the 7th house in general, and what it means for you depends on the sign, the planets, the aspects and the rest of the chart. If your question is what to do with a concrete relationship, the Love Synastry compares two charts and shows where people fit together and where they need an agreement. If your question is about your whole life, the 12 Houses Chart reads the 7th house together with the other eleven, and that is the path by which the areas begin to talk to one another. Whoever does not yet have the drawing of their own chart can generate the free birth chart and see where the Descendant falls.
If the 7th house is where the other enters, what part of you only appears when someone is in front of you? And what would you do with it if you could look without hurry?
And the questions that come up most on this subject, with the short answer:
What does the 7th house mean in a birth chart? It is the house of face-to-face relationships: marriage, partnerships, associations and the way you bond with the other. It begins at the Descendant, the point opposite the Ascendant.
How do I find my 7th house? By calculating the chart with date, time and city of birth. Without the time, houses do not exist. The 7th house begins at the point exactly opposite the Ascendant.
Is an empty 7th house bad? No. A house without planets is read through the sign at its beginning and through the ruler, and every chart has empty houses. This says nothing about the quantity or quality of your relationships.
What is the difference between the 7th house and the 5th house in love? The 5th house speaks of courtship, pleasure and romance. The 7th house speaks of commitment and partnership, of what is built as a couple and of what is agreed with the other.
In short, the 7th house is the house of the other: it begins at the Descendant, opposite the Ascendant, and speaks of marriage, partnerships, associations and what you project onto people. To read it in your chart, you need your time of birth, the sign that opens the house, the planets that live in it and the ruler, and an empty house also says something.
