The 4th house is the house of home and roots. It speaks of family, childhood, the house where you live and the house where you grew up, and also of what is built beneath public life, the emotional ground of each person. In the birth chart it begins at the Imum Coeli, the lowest point of the drawing, exactly opposite the Midheaven.
Think of the smell of a kitchen you knew in childhood, or the feeling of walking into your home after a long day. Someone can live in ten places and recognize only one of them as home. The 4th house is that territory, and it has a simple and difficult question: where is your place, and what do you carry from the place you came from?
The Latin astrologers called the point that opens the fourth place the Imum Coeli, the bottom of the sky, the point where the Sun passes at midnight. The Hellenistic astrologers called it the subterranean place, and tradition linked it to the father or the mother, depending on the school, to inheritance, property, the tomb and the end of things. There is a coherent image in that list: the fourth place is the ground, where things begin and where, in the end, they return.
The 4th house is an angular house, like houses 1, 7 and 10, and traditional astrology reads the angular houses as the most striking in the chart. Its opposite is the 10th house, the house of public life, and so the two form a pair: what you show the world and what you keep beneath it. The oldest symbolic association of the 4th house is with Cancer and the Moon, shelter, memory, care, a reading of symbols that does not mean Cancer is in your 4th house. The sign that opens it depends on your chart, and the planet that rules that sign is one of the most useful clues.
José Ortega y Gasset wrote in the Meditations on Quixote: “I am myself and my circumstance, and if I do not save it, I do not save myself.” The sentence is a good question for the 4th house. What is the circumstance you come from, the family, the language, the neighborhood, the era? And what happens when someone asks about it, instead of just living inside it?
The themes that tend to appear here are home, the family of origin, the relationship with the mother and the father, childhood, ancestry and what is inherited without noticing. Whoever has the Moon in the 4th house is usually read as someone who needs a welcoming home to feel well. With Saturn in the 4th house, the home of origin may have been serious and demanding, and the person sometimes learns early to manage alone. With Venus in house 4, home is usually a place of beauty and care. These are paths of reading, and the whole chart decides.
The 4th house gets confused with the 10th house and with the 1st house, and separating them helps. The 4th house is the base, what holds life up from the inside out. The 10th house is what you build for the world to see, such as career and name. The 1st house is the body and the first impression. Someone can have a turbulent 4th house and a brilliant 10th house, and the opposite also happens. Reading the two together shows where the energy comes from for what the person does in public.
To know which is your 4th house, the chart needs your time of birth. Without it houses do not exist, and a chart that shows houses without asking for the time is making that part up. That is why we ask for the birth certificate, and there is a whole text about the case of those who say I do not know what time I was born. The 4th house begins at the Imum Coeli, the lowest point of the chart, opposite the Midheaven, and runs to the start of the 5th house. Knowing the sign of the Imum Coeli already tells you what color the 4th house opens with. In quadrant house systems, such as Placidus, it begins exactly at that point; in whole-sign systems, it is the entire sign in which the point falls.
With the chart in hand, it is worth asking three questions. Which sign opens the 4th house? Which planets live in it? And where is its ruler? Imagine the 4th house opens in Pisces: the traditional ruler is Jupiter, and if it is in the 9th house, the idea of home may involve another city, another country or a faith. If it opens in Taurus, the ruler is Venus, and if it is in the 2nd house, home and money may go together. These are hypotheses of reading, and the whole chart confirms or corrects them.
A 4th house with no planets is not a family without history. Astrology reads an empty house through the sign that opens it and through its ruler, and every chart has empty houses. What changes is where the conversation happens: the subject of origin is settled at another point of the chart, where the ruler points.
A house on its own does not tell you how your childhood was or how your home will be. This text speaks about the 4th house in general, and what it means for you depends on the sign, the planets, the aspects and the rest of the chart. If your question is about family, the Ancestry Chart reads what comes from behind you, and the 12 Houses Chart places the 4th house beside the other eleven areas of life. Whoever does not yet have the drawing of their own chart can generate the free birth chart.
If the 4th house is the ground you stand on, what did you inherit from there that you still carry without having chosen it? And what would you like to build beneath your life so that it stays upright?
And the questions that come up most on this subject, with the short answer:
What does the 4th house mean in a birth chart? It is the house of home and roots: family, childhood, property and the emotional ground of the person. It begins at the Imum Coeli.
How do I find my 4th house? By calculating the chart with date, time and city of birth. The 4th house begins at the Imum Coeli, which depends on the exact time.
Does the 4th house speak about the mother or the father? In tradition it is linked to one of the parents, depending on the school, and in general to the family of origin. Today it is read as the emotional environment in which the person grew up.
Is an empty 4th house bad? No. A house without planets is read through the sign that opens it and through its ruler, and every chart has empty houses.
In short, the 4th house is the house of home and roots: it begins at the Imum Coeli and speaks of family, childhood and the emotional ground of each person. To read it in your chart, you need your time of birth, the sign that opens it, the planets that live in it and the ruler, and an empty house also says something.
