The 8th house is the house of intimacy and transformation. It speaks of what is shared with the other, such as shared money, inheritances, debts and life as a couple from the inside, and also of the crises that change someone forever. In the birth chart it is the sector where depth appears, and that is why it tends to be the most feared house and the most talked about.
Think of an honest conversation with someone you trust, one of those in which you say something you had never said. Or a loss that reorganized a life. The 8th house is that territory, and it asks what happens when you truly open yourself to another person or to a change you did not choose, and what is left of you afterward.
The Hellenistic astrologers called the eighth place the place of death, and tradition also linked it to what is inherited from the dead and to what belongs to other people. The reputation is heavy, and today's astrology softens it: death here is symbolic, the end of a cycle, transformation, and the eighth place came to speak of inheritances, shared resources and intimacy. There is coherence in that, because what is truly shared with someone tends to cost a part of oneself.
The 8th house is a succedent house, like houses 2, 5 and 11. Its opposite is the 2nd house, the house of one's own resources, and so the two form a pair: what is yours and what is shared. The oldest symbolic association of the 8th house is with Scorpio and Mars, and in modern readings also with Pluto, depth, intensity, what hides beneath the surface, a reading of symbols that does not mean Scorpio is in your 8th house. The sign that opens it depends on your chart, and the planet that rules that sign is one of the most useful clues.
Heraclitus left the fragment: “You cannot step into the same river twice.” The sentence is a good question for the 8th house. After a great change, are you the same person who entered the river? And what in you had to stay on the bank so that the rest could keep flowing?
The themes that tend to appear here are intimacy, sexuality, the money of partnerships and couples, taxes, debts, inheritances, grief and processes of psychological transformation. Whoever has Pluto in the 8th house is usually read as someone intense, who lives changes in depth. With Venus in house 8, intimacy can be lived with pleasure and with the wish to unite. With Saturn in the 8th house, opening up may be slow, with a fear of losing control. These are paths of reading, and the whole chart decides.
The 8th house gets confused with the 7th house and with the 12th house, and separating them helps. The 7th house is the visible commitment, the marriage, the contract. The 8th house is what happens inside the bond, the intimacy, the shared money and the secrets. The 12th house is what stays hidden from everyone, even from the person living it. Someone can have a harmonious 7th house and a difficult 8th house, and live a relationship that is beautiful on the outside and tense on the inside. Reading the three together avoids attributing to one what belongs to another.
To know which is your 8th house, the chart needs your time of birth. Without it houses do not exist, and a chart that shows houses without asking for the time is making that part up. That is why we ask for the birth certificate, and there is a whole text about the case of those who say I do not know what time I was born. The 8th house begins after the Descendant, above the horizon, and runs to the start of the 9th house. Like the other houses, it depends on the time of birth to be placed in your chart.
With the chart in hand, it is worth asking three questions. Which sign opens the 8th house? Which planets live in it? And where is its ruler? Imagine the 8th house opens in Sagittarius: the ruler is Jupiter, and if it is in the 2nd house, other people's money and yours may meet with generosity. If it opens in Virgo, the ruler is Mercury, and if it is in the 3rd house, intimacy may pass through conversation and attention to detail. These are hypotheses of reading, and the whole chart confirms or corrects them.
An 8th house with no planets is not a life without depth. Astrology reads an empty house through the sign that opens it and through its ruler, and every chart has empty houses. What changes is where the conversation happens: the subject of intimacy and transformation is settled at another point of the chart, where the ruler points.
A house on its own does not tell you what crisis you will live through. This text speaks about the 8th house in general, and what it means for you depends on the sign, the planets, the aspects and the rest of the chart. If your question is about your inner side, the Shadow Chart reads what stays hidden, and the 12 Houses Chart places the 8th house beside the other eleven areas of life. Whoever does not yet have the drawing of their own chart can generate the free birth chart.
If the 8th house is where what is yours meets what is the other's, what have you been avoiding sharing? And what in you has already changed and does not yet have a name?
And the questions that come up most on this subject, with the short answer:
What does the 8th house mean in a birth chart? It is the house of intimacy and transformation: what is shared with the other, inheritances, debts, crises and what changes within.
How do I find my 8th house? By calculating the chart with date, time and city of birth. Without the time, houses do not exist.
Does the 8th house speak about death? In tradition it was the place of death. Today it is read as symbolic death: the end of cycles, losses and transformations. It announces no event.
What is the difference between the 8th house and the 2nd house? The 2nd house is what is yours: income, talents and values. The 8th house is what is shared with others: inheritances, partnerships and intimacy.
In short, the 8th house is the house of intimacy and transformation: it speaks of what is shared with the other, of inheritances, of crises and of what changes within. To read it in your chart, you need your time of birth, the sign that opens it, the planets that live in it and the ruler, and an empty house also says something.
