The Hellenistic astrologers called the fifth place good fortune, and tradition says Venus rejoices in it. It is a coherent combination: pleasure, grace, courtship, the generous table. The fifth place was also the place of children, and it is by this custom that astrology still reads the relationship with them there, alongside the creation of other things put into the world, such as a project, a work or an idea.

The 5th house is a succedent house, like houses 2, 8 and 11. Its opposite is the 11th house, the house of groups and collective hopes, and so the two form a pair: what you do for pleasure and what you do for the group. The oldest symbolic association of the 5th house is with Leo and the Sun, one's own light, the stage, the heart, a reading of symbols that does not mean Leo is in your 5th house. The sign that opens it depends on your chart, and the planet that rules that sign is one of the most useful clues.

Friedrich Nietzsche wrote in Thus Spoke Zarathustra: “One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.” The sentence fits the 5th house. Creativity and pleasure ask for a little mess inside, and perfect tidiness tends to leave them out. What, in your chaos, is still asking to become a dance?

The themes that tend to appear here are dating and flirting, children, the arts, sport, hobbies and play. Whoever has Venus in house 5 is usually read as someone who lives romance with grace. With Mars in the 5th house, pleasure may come through action, competition and the energy of the body. With Saturn in the 5th house, joy may come more slowly, and the person sometimes pushes themselves to have fun. These are paths of reading, and the whole chart decides.

The 5th house and the 7th house get confused in love, and separating them helps. The 5th house is romance, courtship, the charm of the beginning. The 7th house is commitment, partnership, the agreement made in the sight of everyone. Someone can have a vibrant 5th house and a shyer 7th house, and live many beginnings without closing a bond. Reading the two together shows where the person falls in love and where they commit.

To know which is your 5th house, the chart needs your time of birth. Without it houses do not exist, and a chart that shows houses without asking for the time is making that part up. With the chart in hand, it is worth asking three questions. Which sign opens the 5th house? Which planets live in it? And where is its ruler? Imagine the 5th house opens in Sagittarius: the ruler is Jupiter, and if it is in the 9th house, pleasure may come through travel, study and everything that widens the horizon. If it opens in Cancer, the ruler is the Moon, and if it is in the 4th house, pleasure and family life may go together. These are hypotheses of reading, and the whole chart confirms or corrects them.
