The sign of Saturn says HOW life makes its demands of you; the house says WHERE. They are two different questions, and in this series the second counts for more than the first, for the same reason it did in Jupiter's, and with even more force.

The sign of Saturn belongs to a whole two-and-a-half-year cohort. The house is yours alone. Two people born in the same week have the same Saturn in Capricorn, and one has it in the 6th house, where it becomes a body charged for overwork, and the other in the 7th, where it becomes a marriage that took fifteen years to happen. It is another life, with the same sign.

That is why this is the half that individualises. Whoever read the series of signs and thought it described half the world was right: it did. This is where the reading becomes about you.

And the hard difference of this series has to be said before anything else: the house depends on the exact time of birth. The whole chart turns about one degree every four minutes, and a house boundary passes in around two hours. Whoever guesses the time does not get an approximate reading, they get somebody else's reading.

Having Saturn in the 7th house means partnership is a serious subject in your life, and that commitment arrives late and stays. The 7th house is the other: marriage, partnership, the contract. Saturn there does not prevent relationship, it makes it heavy and lasting. The person takes a long time to commit, weighs it a great deal, and once she takes it on she does not leave.

The pattern that repeats is this: few relationships and long ones, almost always with somebody older, more serious or more established. And a feeling, in youth, of always being behind whoever has already married.

And here is what hardly any text writes down: this is the house most often mistaken for solitude, and the difference is enormous. Saturn in the 7th tends to spend long periods alone, and almost never for lack of opportunity: it is real selectivity, and it avoids a great deal of bad relationship. The risk is not being alone, it is confusing high standards with a locked door and not noticing the difference in time.

It is worth remembering why this half weighs so much: the sign of Saturn belongs to a whole two-and-a-half-year cohort, and this house is yours alone. It is what makes the difference between two people born in the same week. In Capricorn that becomes a late marriage that lasts decades; in Aries, somebody who chooses fast, is let down and takes a long time to try again.

It shows in the difference between how many relationships this person has had and how long they lasted. These are concrete signs, the kind you recognise in your own week:

• takes a long time to commit, and keeps her word when she does
• has few relationships, and all of them long
• gets involved with people who are older or more established
• takes an agreement seriously, informal ones included
• feels she is behind the others, in her youth
• is sought out to mediate what others cannot settle

Notice what this list does not say. It does not say the person is cold or too demanding, two labels this placement carries and that describe the excess, not the placement. It says her bond is built, and that is why it holds.

The strength is the agreement that is kept: with this person, what was agreed counts. It is the scarcest competence there is in relationships and in business, because almost everybody agrees on impulse and revises afterwards. Whoever keeps her word accumulates a trust that cannot be bought.

In practice that turns into three useful things: an ability to keep a bond going for decades, which is uncommon and worth a great deal; a seriousness with contracts that avoids most losses; and a sense of justice that makes her the natural arbiter in a family and at work.

That strength does best in partnership, law, mediation, long-term consulting and any arrangement in which the agreement is the product. And it does badly in a setting of unfair dispute, an arrangement with no clear rule and anywhere agreeing something counts for nothing.

There are two, and they are opposites: the excess is the criterion turning into a door that opens for nobody, and the deficiency is the person who gave up on this area before it ever held her to account. The Shelly Method reads every archetype through four faces, the light, the shadow, the excess and the deficiency, and in Saturn the face of deficiency is the planet's signature: it shrinks what it touches, and the commonest way of shrinking is to stop trying.

The excess is the demand that lets nobody in: the person weighs it so much that she never decides, and spends her life in trial relationships. It also shows up as a rigid emotional contract, holding the other to the same measure every time, with no room for human error.

The deficiency is the opposite and passes for realism: the person gave up on this area and calls the giving up maturity. Here she is the person who accepted any arrangement rather than be alone. After a loss or a long solitude, she lowered the whole standard, and lives in an agreement she knows is unequal, calling that maturity. It is the most painful face of this house.

Both faces have the same raw material, and that is why the repair is the same: a criterion that needs a deadline, and not less demand. It is not solved by asking the person to open up more, the selectivity is her competence. It is solved with a deadline: deciding about a relationship within a defined time, instead of weighing it forever; and putting on paper every partnership involving money, and that is what Saturn's sign and the rest of the chart show.

Every house has a pair, and the pair of 7 is house 1. They are not separate subjects: they are the two ends of the same pair, and an excess at one end shows up as a lack at the other. The 1st house is the opposite: you yourself. A Saturn in the 7th very turned toward the contract tends to have a little-trained identity, not for lack of personality, but for lack of use.

The exercise is small and hard: answering what I want before knowing what the other prefers. It applies to the restaurant and it applies to a life.

It matures when the person learns to decide within a deadline, and that is worth more than any attempt to learn to be less demanding. The criterion goes on being the talent; what changes is that it stops costing the years in which the decision stayed open.

And here lies the most recognisable turn of a whole biography: the return of Saturn, at around 29 and again at around 58. It is when it comes back to the degree it was at when you were born, and the subject of THIS HOUSE charges the whole bill at once. Here the return usually comes with people: a marriage, a separation, a partnership formed or dissolved, a contract that redefines who decides what.

This is the most honest check a house reading allows, and it is worth doing now: what happened in your life between 28 and 31, and which area did it belong to?

Maturity here is not learning to accept less. It is the person coming to tell apart the criterion that protects from the weighing that never ends. A mature Saturn in the 7th house goes on being demanding, and starts choosing within the deadline, and it is that choice that turns solitude into a bond.

No honest text gives an exact age for this: the arc depends on the whole chart.

It says where life charges slowly, not that you are going to fail there. It is the opposite: it is the area in which the competence you build is not lost, because it did not come from ease.
