What the house of the Part of Fortune says in your birth chart
The sign of the Part of Fortune says in what manner; the house says WHERE. And in this series the house has an advantage no other house on this site has.
It is the only house in the chart that barely moves when the birth time is wrong. Measured in São Paulo, every six hours across fifty years: one hour of error changes the house of the North Node in 50.1% of charts, and the house of the Part of Fortune in 5.5%. Four minutes of error change it in 0.3%. In every other house series the honest sentence is “without the exact time, the house is worthless”; here it is not.
And the measurement says why. In one hour the Ascendant moves 15.01 degrees — and the Part of Fortune moves 15.01 degrees. It travels with the Ascendant because it comes from it: the formula is the Ascendant plus the distance between the Moon and the Sun. Only the Moon opens a gap between the two, 0.51 degree per hour. From that comes an identity, not a coincidence: the distance from the Ascendant to the Part of Fortune IS the phase of the Moon. We checked it in 73,050 charts, with a worst-case difference of 0.0000000000002 degree.
And the house shares out evenly — each of the twelve receives the Part of Fortune around 8.3% of the time, with a maximum deviation from flat of 0.180 percentage point.
There is one large trap. The classical formula changes between day and night, and the two versions never fall in the same house — zero in 73,050 measurements. They mirror each other around the line of the Ascendant, so one is always on one side and the other on the other. Whoever uses the wrong formula does not get it wrong sometimes: they get it wrong always.
And a limit stated on the first screen, because the old name misleads: the Part of Fortune is not luck and does not promise money. What the modern reading describes is the place in the chart where a person recovers without spending strength.
What it means to have the Part of Fortune in the 7th house
The Part of Fortune in the 7th house puts rest in the presence of another person — and it is the only place in the chart where it does not happen alone. It is the house of the encounter: the partnership, the marriage, the agreement. With the Part of Fortune here, a person recovers in twos, and the rest of the chart does not change that.
It is not the house of someone who depends on company. It is the house of someone whose head is clearer after a conversation than after a night of thinking alone.
And here is what hardly any text writes down: this is the hardest position to accept, because it contradicts the one rule everybody learned. “You have to be enough on your own.” Here, you do not. This person’s rest is relational by construction, and pretending otherwise means a lifetime of demanding a self-sufficiency that is not even desirable in her chart.
How the Part of Fortune in the 7th house shows up day to day
It does not show up as neediness. It shows up in the difference in quality between a thought of yours alone and the same thought said out loud to someone. These are concrete signs, the kind you recognise in your own week:
- You understand what you are feeling while explaining it to another person.
- Working in a pair tires you less than working alone, even when the pair is hard work.
- Lunch with someone in the middle of a heavy day saves the whole day.
- You are good at agreements — and people come to you to unblock what is stuck between two parties.
- Long periods alone do not make you sad: they make you confused.
Notice what that list does not say. It does not say the person is dependent or unable to be alone — two labels this position carries that describe the excess, not the position. It says that she remakes herself in the encounter, and so must choose carefully who she spends the ordinary hours with.
What are the strengths of the Part of Fortune in the 7th house
You make the other person better. Whoever rests in this house tends to improve those around her without trying, and that is usually the most valuable thing she offers. It is a partnership skill in the old sense: she sees what the other does best and builds an arrangement where both sides win — because her rest depends on that arrangement existing.
In practice that becomes three useful things: closing a fair agreement without strain, choosing partners with judgement and leaving early a relationship where the conversation has ended.
That strength does best in any work done in twos or facing people: partnership, service, mediation, consulting. And it pays off badly in an isolated job with no counterpart, because there her rest has simply no way in.
What are the challenges of the Part of Fortune in the 7th house
There are two, and they are opposites: the excess is always being accompanied so as never to be with herself, and the deficiency is someone who forces on herself an independence her chart does not ask for. The Shelly Method reads every archetype through four faces — the light, the shadow, the excess and the deficiency —, and at this point they have one thing in common: the house says WHERE the rest happens, and the rest of the chart says whether the person allows it.
The excess is continuous company: a diary full of people, no free evening, one relationship beginning before the last has ended. The presence that rests becomes the presence that blocks — and she never gets to know what she thinks when nobody is talking.
The deficiency is the opposite: is forced self-sufficiency. She learned that asking is weakness and solves everything alone. It works, and it costs: she lives permanently tired because she is trying to recover by the one route her chart does not offer.
Both faces have the same raw material, and that is why the repair is the same: telling someone about an unresolved thing, before resolving it. Before, and not after: what rests here is thinking together, and reporting the finished result is not thinking together — and that is what the sign of the Part of Fortune and the rest of the chart show.

And from it comes a result worth memorising: at the four main phases the Part of Fortune always falls on one of the four angles of the chart. The signs series already publishes the DEGREES of that turn; what is missing there is the house number, and the mirror of the nocturnal chart:

At the New and the Full Moon it does not matter whether the chart is diurnal or nocturnal: adding and subtracting zero is the same calculation, and the same holds for 180 degrees. At the quarters it does matter, and the swap is from one angle to the other. Whoever has the Part of Fortune in the 7th house was born near the Full Moon — and here the diurnal and nocturnal formulas give the same place, because adding and subtracting 180 degrees is the same turn. In a Full Moon chart that calculation lands on the Descendant — the cusp of the 7th house — and it lands there by day as much as by night.
It is the only phase, along with the New Moon, where it does not matter whether the Sun was above or below the horizon. The house of the encounter is the house where the two calculations meet.
How the Part of Fortune in the 7th house changes over time
What changes with time is not the person needing fewer people: it is her choosing better the people she needs. At twenty, being accompanied meant being with someone. Later it becomes being with someone who gives thought back.
And there is a freedom only this house gives: even with an approximate time, it is usually right — which cannot be said in the other series.
And here is the most honest check a house reading allows: think of the last good decision you made. If it became clear during a conversation, and not before it, this house is in the right place.
