What the Imum Coeli is
The Imum Coeli is the degree of the zodiac that was at the lowest point of the sky at the moment and in the place where you were born. It is not a planet: it is an angle, like the Ascendant and like the Midheaven. It sits under your feet, on the other side of the Earth, which is why nobody ever sees it.
Tradition calls it the root of the chart. If the Midheaven describes what people see you doing, the Imum Coeli describes where you came from and where you withdraw to — the family, the home of origin, the ground left when everything else is taken apart. Its Latin name is Imum Coeli, the bottom of the sky, and many programs abbreviate it as IC.
It is the angle with the least written about it, and the reason is simple: it does not sell. Reputation and career make pages; the house someone came from is a subject that does not fit a list of tips.
Imum Coeli in Aquarius is Midheaven in Leo, always
This is not interpretation: it is the same line seen from both ends. The Imum Coeli sits exactly 180 degrees after the Midheaven — no exception and no dependence on the house system. Whoever has the Imum Coeli in Aquarius has the Midheaven in Leo, and the other way round too.
And the consequence is the most useful part of this page: what you show the world and what you keep at home are made of the same material, divided up — one asked for the opposite of the other. Whoever climbs a long way with the Midheaven in Leo usually finds out, sooner or later, that the bill is paid at the base. If you want to read the other end, it is in Midheaven in Leo.
How long each sign takes at the bottom of the sky
The twelve signs do not cross the lowest point of the sky in the same time — and, unlike the Ascendant, this number is the SAME all over the world. The meridian formula uses sidereal time and the Earth’s tilt, and it does not use latitude. Measured with 23.4381 degrees:
| Sign at the bottom of the sky | How long it takes | Of the day |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 1h51 | 7.75% |
| Taurus | 1h59 | 8.31% |
| Gemini | 2h08 | 8.94% |
| Cancer | 2h08 | 8.94% |
| Leo | 1h59 | 8.31% |
| Virgo | 1h51 | 7.75% |
| Libra | 1h51 | 7.75% |
| Scorpio | 1h59 | 8.31% |
| Sagittarius | 2h08 | 8.94% |
| Capricorn | 2h08 | 8.94% |
| Aquarius | 1h59 | 8.31% |
| Pisces | 1h51 | 7.75% |
The same number in Belém and in Reykjavík. It is the difference that separates this angle from the Ascendant: the Ascendant changes with the CITY, and the Imum Coeli changes with the CLOCK. Two people born at the same instant on the same meridian have the same Imum Coeli, whether they are in Pará or in Iceland. And the table repeats every six signs, so the Imum Coeli divides the time exactly as the Midheaven does.
What having the Imum Coeli in Aquarius means
Having the Imum Coeli in Aquarius means Aquarius was at the lowest point of the sky at the moment of your birth, with Leo overhead. The Imum Coeli is the origin, and Aquarius makes it different: a house outside the mould, by choice or by circumstance.
The house you came from, with Aquarius underneath
The home of origin tends to have been unusual in some way — a family arrangement outside the standard, parents with ideas of their own, a change of country, one of them absent, a family assembled from people who were not relatives. What stays is the old feeling of not quite belonging, and the freedom that comes with it.
The Imum Coeli needs your birth time, and the calculation is free.
See my Imum CoeliHow it shows up today
Today it shows in how you choose your own people. The real family tends to be the chosen one, and that is not bitterness: it is how the base works. It also shows in the need for your own space inside the house, even living with people you love.
The ruler of the Imum Coeli in Aquarius is Saturn
The sign says what; the ruler says where. Aquarius is ruled by Saturn, which organises the rule and the break from it — and where Saturn sits in your chart shows what your base rests on today. Saturn in the 2nd house tends to tie the origin to money; in the 9th, to a distant place; in the 12th, to a part of the story that was left unnamed.
It is the difference between knowing the climate and knowing the address. The rulership used here is the traditional one, the same as on the page about the chart ruler, and the same one this site’s engine uses to calculate dignity.
Is the Imum Coeli the 4th house?
In Placidus, which is the system this site uses, the Imum Coeli is the cusp of the 4th house by construction. In whole signs, not always: there the 4th house starts three signs from the Ascendant, and the Imum Coeli can fall in the 3rd or the 4th. It is worth looking at which system your chart used before mixing the two.
The 4th house is the area of life: family, home, the end of things. The Imum Coeli is the POINT where it starts — and it is the point that carries the sign. If the difference between point and house is not yet clear, it is in what an astrological house is.
The four angles of the chart
The chart has four angles, and they are two opposite pairs. The Ascendant and the Descendant form the horizon line: how you arrive and what arrives at you. The Midheaven and the Imum Coeli form the meridian line: what people see you doing and where you came from.
All four depend on the exact time, and only two of them also depend on the city — the ones on the horizon. Whoever knows all four knows where the chart touches the world.
What the Imum Coeli in Aquarius does not say about you
It does not tell what happened in your house. It describes a temperature, not an episode: the same placement shows up in very different stories, and yours is the one that counts. Nobody should find out their own childhood in a blog post.
It is also not your personality. The Imum Coeli is ONE angle out of four, in a chart that has ten planets, twelve houses and the aspects between them. Reading only this piece is reading one line of a full-page text.
A limit said out loud, because it is also part of reading seriously: none of this is a diagnosis. Astrology does not replace therapy, and a heavy family history is a subject for people trained for it.
Frequently asked questions about the Imum Coeli in Aquarius
Does an Imum Coeli in Aquarius mean my family is distant?
It means the origin is different from the standard, and distance is one of the forms of that — not the only one. It also shows up in very close families well off the curve, where the difference was a source of pride rather than of separation.
Is the Imum Coeli always the sign opposite the Midheaven?
Always, and that is arithmetic. The Imum Coeli is the degree exactly opposite the Midheaven — 180 degrees, with no exception and no dependence on the house system. That is why Imum Coeli in Aquarius and Midheaven in Leo are the same information said two ways.
Does the Imum Coeli change if I was born in another city?
Only if the meridian changes. The Imum Coeli formula uses sidereal time and the Earth’s tilt, and it does not use latitude — so two people born at the same instant on the same meridian have the same Imum Coeli, anywhere on the planet. Their Ascendant, on the other hand, can fall in different signs.
Do I need the exact birth time?
You do. The Imum Coeli moves with the Midheaven, about fifteen minutes of arc per minute of the clock: an error of half an hour changes its sign one time in four, and an error of an hour changes it half the time. With Aquarius underneath, that means a window of 1h59 — and a whole guessed hour fits inside it.
