The phase is the distance between the Sun and the Moon at the instant you were born. Nothing more than that: when the two are in the same place in the sky it is a New Moon, when they are on opposite sides it is a Full Moon, and the rest of the month is the road from one to the other. What you see in the sky, the lit portion, is the consequence of that distance, not the cause.

It is not your Moon sign, and the confusion is common. The sign says WHERE the Moon was; the phase says HOW FAR it was from the Sun. Two people with the Moon in Cancer may have been born one on the New and the other on the Full, and their readings do not look alike.

And it is one of the few things in a chart that a person can check with no astrologer at all: all it took was looking up that night.

Here is the number that almost every text on the subject gets wrong. We measured 124,185 charts, every six hours between 1940 and 2025, with the same rule this site uses:

The New Moon appears in 6.8% of charts; the Waxing Moon, in 43.2%; the Full Moon, in 6.8%; and the Waning Moon, in 43.2%.

Being born on a Full Moon is one in fifteen, not one in four. The reason is plain once you see it: “New” and “Full” are windows of about two days each, and the month is 29.5 days long. The rest, nearly 26 days, is waxing or waning. Anyone who cuts the month into four equal slices arrives at 25% for each, and that is why the wrong number keeps circulating.

If your phase is Waxing or Waning, you are with almost half of everybody. If it is New or Full, you are with one in fifteen, and then it is worth knowing that the exact date matters more than usual, because the window is narrow.

“You were born on a Full Moon” means that your birth day is the day the local calendar marked as full. That is how an astrologer answers, and that is how this site calculates it: it takes the exact instant of the full moon, sees which day it fell on in the BIRTH time zone, and compares that to your day.

The difference is not academic. A full moon whose instant is 11:50 p.m. on a Tuesday belongs to Tuesday for someone born in São Paulo and to Wednesday for someone born in Lisbon, same instant, two calendars. A rule that looked only at the angle would say the same thing to both, and would be wrong for one of them.

That is why the phase is one of the few things in a chart that depends on the PLACE without depending on the time. The Moon sign changes with the hour; the phase, almost always, does not, but it changes with the time zone.

When the time zone is unknown, the site falls back to a plan B: it names the phase from the angle alone, with a window that imitates the shape of the civil day. Measured: the two rules disagree on 3.5% of dates, one chart in 29.

And the plan B window is asymmetric on purpose, which looks like carelessness and is not: half a day before the instant and a day and a half after. “The day of the instant and the next one” is not a centred window, counted from the instant, it runs on average half a day back and a day and a half forward. Plan B copies that shape.

One chart in 29 is little and it is not nothing. If your phase is at one of the ends, New or Full, that is exactly where the 3.5% pile up, because those are the narrow windows.

The tradition divides the lunation into eight stretches: New, Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter and Balsamic. This site calculates all eight, they pick each day’s quotation and ritual, and shows four.

The reason is language, and it was a decision: people who read astrology do not say “gibbous” or “balsamic”. They say New, Waxing, Full and Waning. A name that makes a person look up the meaning of the word before the meaning of the phase is working against them.

Across the eight stretches, the New appears in 6.7% of charts; the Crescent, in 18.2%; the First Quarter, in 6.9%; the Waxing Gibbous, in 18.2%; the Full, in 6.6%; the Waning Gibbous, in 18.2%; the Last Quarter, in 6.9%; and the Balsamic, in 18.3%.

Notice that the four long stretches sit near 18.2% each and the four narrow ones between 6.6% and 6.9%. The lunation does not divide into equal parts, and no honest rule pretends it does.

Until August 2026 this site cut the lunation into eight 45-degree slices, which is the arithmetic you find in most places. It has a concrete defect: it calls “Full Moon” a period that starts almost two days before the actual full moon.

Measured: the old rule and the current one give different names 22.9% of the time. That is not a boundary detail, it is more than one day in five. The new arithmetic measures the distance to the INSTANT of each quarter, rather than the angular slice the Moon happens to be in.

We measured 1,052 consecutive lunations: the average from one new moon to the next is 29.531 days. But the shortest lasted 29.28 and the longest 29.83, half a day between one and the other.

The cause is the Moon’s orbit, which is not a circle: it moves faster when it is closer to Earth. That is why a table of phases built “every 29.5 days” accumulates error, and why this site hunts down each quarter instead of adding months.

At the New Moon, Sun and Moon are in the same place, and no light is visible. It is the beginning without information: people born here tend to act on their own impulse and find out what they wanted after they have already started. The difficulty is seeing themselves from outside, there is no distance between what is felt and what is done.

At the Waxing Moon, the Moon pulls away from the Sun and gains light. This is the phase of building against resistance: things move, and they move by pushing something. People born here tend to have energy for starting and a difficult relationship with whatever is already established.

At the Full Moon, Sun and Moon are on opposite sides, and the whole Moon is lit. This is the phase of awareness and tension: people born here see both sides of everything, themselves included, and pay for it in indecision. Relationships tend to be the mirror in which such a person sees themselves.

At the Waning Moon, the light diminishes and the Moon heads back towards the Sun. This is the phase of meaning and of handing on: people born here tend to care more about the significance than the result, and find it easy to pass on what they learned. The difficulty is starting new things.

The phase does not tell you your sign, your temperament or your fate, and it does not replace the Moon by sign and house, the two strongest pieces of information about your emotional life. The phase is one more layer, and it answers a specific question: at what point of the cycle between Sun and Moon you arrived.

And it says nothing on its own. A Full Moon in Cancer in the 4th house and a Full Moon in Aquarius in the 10th describe the same tension and two lives that look nothing alike.
