The sign of Saturn says HOW life makes its demands of you; the house says WHERE. They are two different questions, and in this series the second counts for more than the first, for the same reason it did in Jupiter's, and with even more force.

The sign of Saturn belongs to a whole two-and-a-half-year cohort. The house is yours alone. Two people born in the same week have the same Saturn in Capricorn, and one has it in the 6th house, where it becomes a body charged for overwork, and the other in the 7th, where it becomes a marriage that took fifteen years to happen. It is another life, with the same sign.

That is why this is the half that individualises. Whoever read the series of signs and thought it described half the world was right: it did. This is where the reading becomes about you.

And the hard difference of this series has to be said before anything else: the house depends on the exact time of birth. The whole chart turns about one degree every four minutes, and a house boundary passes in around two hours. Whoever guesses the time does not get an approximate reading, they get somebody else's reading.

Having Saturn in the 5th house means allowing yourself costs something, and that what you create is going to last. The 5th house is what comes out of you: work, children, pleasure, romance, games. Saturn there produces a difficult relationship with your own right to enjoy yourself, the person creates well and takes a very long time to authorise herself to do it.

It usually comes from a short childhood: a house where playing was a waste of time, a responsibility that arrived early, an adult who needed her. The child with no room becomes a serious adult who finds her own pleasure strange.

And here is what hardly any text writes down: this placement does not take away the talent: it delays the permission, and the delay costs decades. Saturn in the 5th is common in people who made good work for twenty years before signing any of it, or who never started, thinking it was already too late. The talent was there from early on; what was missing was the internal authorisation. And what comes after it usually has a solidity that easy work does not.

It is worth remembering why this half weighs so much: the sign of Saturn belongs to a whole two-and-a-half-year cohort, and this house is yours alone. In Leo that becomes a body of work with a name that took a long time to exist; in Virgo, a creative craft done with precision and without fanfare.

It shows in the distance between how much this person creates and how much she shows. These are concrete signs, the kind you recognise in your own week:

• creates well and shows little, out of habit
• thinks it is already too late to start, from the age of twenty
• takes her own leisure seriously, and so rests badly
• has a serious, responsible relationship with children
• takes a long time to allow herself romance, and takes it seriously once she starts
• the work she finishes tends to last longer than average

Notice what this list does not say. It does not say the person is bitter or without talent, two labels this placement carries and that describe the excess, not the placement. It says her joy is built, not given.

The strength is work that lasts: what this person creates is not disposable. She does not make it for the applause of the month, she makes it to stand, and that is why, when she finally publishes, the work holds through the next decade while other people's ages.

In practice that turns into three useful things: a creative competence built over years, which does not depend on fashion; a seriousness with children and with whoever is starting out, which shapes people; and an ability to finish a project, which is what most creative people do not have.

That strength does best in long-term authored work, teaching, direction, craftsmanship and any arrangement in which the work speaks before the person. And it does badly in a setting that demands constant enthusiasm, work of quick visibility and anywhere producing a lot counts for more than producing well.

There are two, and they are opposites: the excess is seriousness turning into a life with no free pleasure at all, and the deficiency is the person who gave up on this area before it ever held her to account. The Shelly Method reads every archetype through four faces, the light, the shadow, the excess and the deficiency, and in Saturn the face of deficiency is the planet's signature: it shrinks what it touches, and the commonest way of shrinking is to stop trying.

The excess is solemnity: the person turns everything into a project, rest included, and loses the part of life that serves no purpose. It also shows up as harshness with a child or a student, demanding from them the same restraint she demanded of herself.

The deficiency is the opposite and passes for realism: the person gave up on this area and calls the giving up maturity. Here she is the person who decided that creating is not for her. She does not write, does not paint, does not apply, does not fall in love, and watches people with half the talent take the place. It is the commonest face of this house, and the most expensive, because the talent is there the whole time.

Both faces have the same raw material, and that is why the repair is the same: a pleasure that needs a diary, and not more merit. It is not solved by asking the person to relax, she will not. It is solved by booking it: one hour a week that exists only for pleasure, treated as an appointment, and one signed thing a year. This house obeys a calendar, and not the will, and that is what Saturn's sign and the rest of the chart show.

Every house has a pair, and the pair of 5 is house 11. They are not separate subjects: they are the two ends of the same pair, and an excess at one end shows up as a lack at the other. The 11th house is the opposite: the group, the friends, the cause. A Saturn in the 5th that does not authorise itself to create tends to hide in the collective, it works for everybody's project and never signs its own.

The correction is to sign something in the singular. A work of your own, a wish of your own, said in your name. It is uncomfortable, and that is exactly why it works.

It matures when the person signs what she made, and that signature is worth more than any attempt to improve it a bit more before showing it. The rigour goes on being the talent; what changes is that it stops being the reason for not starting.

And here lies the most recognisable turn of a whole biography: the return of Saturn, at around 29 and again at around 58. It is when it comes back to the degree it was at when you were born, and the subject of THIS HOUSE charges the whole bill at once. Here the return usually comes with work or with a child: a project that leaves the page, a child born or growing up, a romance that turns serious, or the first time she accepts being called by the name of what she does.

This is the most honest check a house reading allows, and it is worth doing now: what happened in your life between 28 and 31, and which area did it belong to?

Maturity here is not learning to enjoy yourself more. It is the person coming to tell apart the rigour that improves the work from the rigour that prevents the start. A mature Saturn in the 5th house goes on being demanding, and starts creating, and it is that creation that turns holding back into a body of work.

No honest text gives an exact age for this: the arc depends on the whole chart.

It says where life charges slowly, not that you are going to fail there. It is the opposite: it is the area in which the competence you build is not lost, because it did not come from ease.

Which sign that Saturn is in changes the manner: Saturn in the 5th house in Pisces creates in a way that moves people and takes a long time to show it; in Capricorn, it turns the talent into a craft and lives off it.
