What a dignity is
Dignity is the answer to a single question: is this planet at home? Each of the seven traditional planets rules one or two signs, and in those it acts with all its resources. In the opposite sign, the same resources are not to hand.
There are four states, and they come in two opposite pairs:

Notice that dignity is neither luck nor punishment. A planet in detriment ruins nobody’s life: it describes an area in which a person operates by method rather than by instinct — and method is a choice, not a limitation.
How many of your planets are at home
We measured 31,390 charts, one a day between 1940 and 2025, with the same arithmetic this site uses. The two numbers that matter first:

Two in every three charts have a planet at home — and almost everybody has something. A completely neutral chart, with none of the seven in domicile, exaltation, detriment or fall, happens in one case in 65.
In other words: having a dignity singles nobody out, and neither does having a debility. What singles you out is WHICH planet, and which area of life it lands in.
Planet by planet, and why the numbers are not equal
Here is the whole table. Each row is the share of charts in which that planet sits in that state:

The Sun and the Moon sit at 8.3% because they rule a single sign, and one sign is a twelfth of the year. The other five rule TWO signs each, so they double: close to 16% in domicile and about as much in detriment.
And Mercury has two dashes on its row, which is not missing data. Mercury is the only planet whose exaltation falls in its own domicile — Virgo — and whose fall lands in its own detriment, Pisces. In 8.4% of charts it sits in Virgo with both dignities at once; in 8.3%, in Pisces with both debilities. There is no way to tell one from the other, so the table does not try.
Saturn shows up in domicile most often (18.7%) and in fall least often (6.0%), and that says nothing about Saturn: it says it takes twenty-nine years to go round, and the sample catches more of its time in Capricorn and Aquarius than in Cancer.
Why only seven planets, and not ten
Essential dignity is an arithmetic of traditional astrology, and the tradition has seven planets. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered later — 1781, 1846 and 1930 — and appear in none of the tables it uses.
That is not conservatism: it is that the WHOLE arithmetic is made of old tables that fit together. The twelve signs divide among seven planets in a symmetrical way — the Sun and the Moon with one sign each, the other five with two, one by day and one by night. Fitting three new planets into that design breaks the symmetry that gives it meaning.
This site handled that in two different ways until today, and the difference was large: the free chart said “Pluto in domicile” to anyone with Pluto in Scorpio, and the paid reading did not. Measured: 48.9% of charts got a label from one screen that the other did not give, and among people born in the 1990s it was 96.2%. Now there is one rule, the one with seven planets, and it lives in a single file.
House rulership still shows both schools, and that is another matter: saying Scorpio is ruled by Pluto in the modern reckoning and by Mars in the traditional one is information. Calling Pluto “in domicile” inside an arithmetic that does not know it is something else.
The points arithmetic the site uses under the hood
The four states above are the ones that get written out. Underneath, date election and the birth-planning report use the tradition’s full scale, which adds five layers:

The middle three are finer than the sign. Triplicity depends on the element and on whether the person was born by day or by night — the same planet at the same degree is worth three points more or less depending on whether the Sun was above or below the horizon. The term divides each sign into five unequal stretches, and the faceinto three of ten degrees.
Those points are not the interpretation. They are the way to ask “does this planet have the resources to act?” on a scale you can compare between two moments — which is exactly what a date election has to do.
What dignity does not say
It does not say whether the planet is strong in your chart. A planet in detriment in the 10th house, conjunct the Midheaven, weighs far more in someone’s life than a planet in domicile hidden in the 12th. Dignity measures the SIGN; strength is another conversation, and it involves house, aspects and speed.
And it is not read on its own. Venus in detriment in Aries and Venus in detriment in Scorpio are the same label and two different things — the first wants everything now, the second wants everything whole. The label opens the question; the sign and the house answer it.

How do I know whether I have a planet in domicile?
The free chart on this site shows each planet’s sign, and from there the arithmetic is direct: Sun in Leo, Moon in Cancer, Mercury in Gemini or Virgo, Venus in Taurus or Libra, Mars in Aries or Scorpio, Jupiter in Sagittarius or Pisces, Saturn in Capricorn or Aquarius. It happens to 65.4% of people.
Is having a planet in detriment bad?
No. It is the same function operating without the tools it likes, which usually turns into method in place of instinct. And it is common: only 1.5% of charts have no dignity or debility at all, so practically everyone has both.

Saturn, in 18.7% of charts — and not by merit: it takes twenty-nine years to go round, and the sample catches more of its time in Capricorn and Aquarius than in Cancer and Leo. Then come Mars (16.2%), Mercury (16.0%) and Jupiter (15.9%).
Is Mercury in Virgo domicile or exaltation?
Both at once, and it is the only such case among the seven. Virgo is Mercury’s house and also the sign it is exalted in; Pisces is its detriment and its fall. Mercury sits in Virgo in 8.4% of charts and in Pisces in 8.3%.
Do I need my birth time?
For the four written states, no: they depend on the sign alone. For the points arithmetic, yes — triplicity changes depending on whether the person was born by day or by night, and that is worth three points.
