When is the next Neptune retrograde?

Neptune goes retrograde once a year, and spends more time moving backwards than any other planet. That is 43.2% of all days — nearly the ceiling geometry allows. The times below are Brasília time and come from the same ephemeris this site uses to build charts.

Why Neptune is the steadiest thing in the sky

Retrogradation is not the planet walking backwards: it is the Earth overtaking it on the inside, with the apparent motion inverting while that lasts. When the other planet is very far away, almost all the movement is the Earth's — and what the Earth does repeats with clockwork precision.

Across the 95 periods between 1930 and 2025, the shortest lasted 157.2 days and the longest 160.3. That is three days of variation over a hundred and sixty. No other planet comes close: Mars varies by 21 days, Saturn varies by 7.8, and Pluto, which is farther out still, varies more than Neptune because of its lopsided orbit.

The stretch redone backwards is just as fixed: 2.8 degrees, across all 95 periods, without a tenth of a degree worth noting. Five months and ten days to undo less than three degrees.

Why the share stops at 43%, and goes no further

There is a ceiling, and it is geometric: 50%. A planet standing still in the sky would be retrograde exactly half the time, because the Earth would spend half of its own turn approaching and half moving away. The slower the planet travels, the closer to that ceiling it gets.

Neptune takes 165 years to go once round the zodiac — it is the slowest of the planets astrology works with, and so it is the one that comes closest: 43.2%. Mercury, the fastest, sits at 19%.

And here is the consequence that matters: a phenomenon that happens on 43% of all days tells no day apart from the others. If Neptune retrograde caused confusion, confusion would be the normal state of almost half of all the days in history. Neptune's shadow never closes

The shadow is the patch of sky the planet covers moving forward before redoing it backwards. In Mercury it opens two weeks before the period and closes two weeks after, and it is a useful warning. Here the arithmetic gives something else.

Neptune's shadow lasts 382 days, and the year has 365. Measured across the nineteen rows of the table on this page: the next period's shadow opens fifteen days BEFORE the previous one closes. There is not a single day, in any year, on which Neptune stands outside a shadow.

It is correct arithmetic that serves no warning, and it is worth saying out loud rather than repeating the word out of habit. Anyone writing that “the Neptune shadow calls for care” is describing the entire calendar. In Uranus retrograde four to nine days a year are left over; here none are.

What actually changes in Neptune retrograde

In the modern tradition, Neptune governs the ideal, imagination, compassion and what has no outline — it is the planet of what gets imagined before it exists. What retrogradation does with that has one direction, and it is recognisable once you know what to look for:

• The picture meets its real size. What you built in your head about a person, a job or a place gets compared with what it is. It is not punishment: it is the difference becoming visible.
• Giving without limits sends the bill. Neptune direct dissolves the boundary — giving too much, caring for people who did not ask, paying other people's bills. Turned inward, it shows how much that cost, and to whom.
• Escape loses its taste. What used to work for not feeling — the endless scroll, the extra glass, the series that never ends — works less well in this phase. It is uncomfortable, and it is the usable part.

What yields less: deciding by impression. Reading the mood tends to be out of focus in this phase, and what looks obvious in the middle of it deserves a second look a week later.

What is not worth postponing: a booked exam, a legal deadline, an enrolment, a course of treatment. And here there is one argument more than with the other planets: with Neptune in shadow 365 days a year, the clear sky some people wait for before acting does not exist.
