Astrology at work: reading the team's chart

Hiring is the easy part. Understanding how a person works is what makes a team perform — and that is where a chart reading has something to say, with clear limits.

By Shelly Gonella in The astrology of every part of your life9 min read

The good hire who is not delivering on your team

You hired well. The right résumé, the right experience, an excellent interview. And six months later nothing has clicked — not through incompetence, not through ill will, but through a mismatch nobody can quite name. The tasks go out, and every one of them comes back with friction.

This is common and it is costly, and it almost always has the same cause: the person's way of working does not meet the place's way of working. Someone who needs context to decide, on a team that decides on the spot. Someone who needs autonomy under a manager who checks in closely. Someone who takes feedback badly when it comes in public.

None of this shows up on a résumé, and much of it does not show up in an interview either — because in an interview everyone is the best version of themselves. What this piece looks at is whether a chart helps you see this earlier, and within what limits, which is the most important part of the matter.

First of all: what this is NOT for

I will start with the limit, because here it is not courtesy — it is the difference between a management tool and something that can harm someone.

This is not a hiring criterion. Never. It is not used to choose between two candidates, it is not used to rule anyone out, and it is not used to justify a dismissal. Choosing a person by birth date is discrimination with friendly vocabulary, and in many places it is also illegal.

It is not done without the person knowing. Reading a subordinate's chart behind their back is the same as reading their diary, and the fact that the information is symbolic changes nothing about the nature of the act.

And it is not used as an evaluation. This does not measure performance, does not predict outcomes and does not say whether someone is good at their job. If you want to know whether the person delivers, look at what they deliver.

What is left after these cuts is narrow and it is real: a vocabulary for understanding someone you already work with and have already chosen to keep.

Mercury, and why the same instruction is understood two different ways

Most team friction starts with communication, and almost never out of bad faith. Two competent people leave the same meeting with different understandings, and each one thinks the other was not paying attention.

Mercury is the piece that describes this working: how someone processes information, in what format they take it in best, how much context they need before acting. Some people work with just the goal and nothing else — too much detail sounds like distrust. Some people need the why before the what, and without it they carry things out without conviction. Some people only take things in written down, and forget what was said standing in the corridor.

And there is a gain that shows up less often: understanding this usually takes the offence off the table. The person who asks for context stops looking like someone who doubts the boss, and the person who only sends the goal stops looking like someone hiding information. Both were working the only way they know how, and neither one was sending a message.

The application is direct and costs nothing: sending the same thing in the format each person reads best. It is the kind of adjustment that looks small and resolves months of noise — and that any manager discovers on their own after a few years, looking back at what actually worked.

Mars, and the pace at which the person decides

Mars is the piece about action: how someone spends energy, how they respond to pressure and at what speed they move. And speed is one of the most common sources of conflict between people who respect each other.

The fast one thinks the careful one is stuck. The careful one thinks the fast one is reckless. Both are correctly describing what they see, and neither is wrong about their own method — one optimises for not wasting time, the other for not making mistakes.

Pressure is the other half of what Mars describes, and it is usually the surprise within teams: people who work very well day to day and come apart under short deadlines, and people who are lukewarm all year and turn excellent when the house is on fire. Neither is fake — they are different temperaments in front of the same urgency.

On a team, knowing who is who allows two practical things: giving each person the kind of task where their speed is a virtue, and warning in advance when the task calls for the opposite. “This one is meant to be done slowly” said at the start avoids the ugly conversation at delivery.

Saturn, house 6, and the structure a person can take

The 6th house is the structure of daily work and craft: routine, method, repeated tasks. Together with Saturn, which is structure and responsibility, it describes the working frame in which someone functions.

There are people who perform under tight structure and struggle without it — deadline, process, someone checking. There are people who produce twice as much with autonomy and freeze under close supervision, which they read as distrust. The same management style produces opposite results in the two, and calling that a difficult personality is giving up on managing.

Then there is the question of feedback, which is where working relationships get damaged the most. Some people take criticism better in writing, with time to digest it. Some prefer it direct and on the spot. For some, public praise embarrasses more than it motivates. None of this is fussiness; it is about how the information gets in.

What to do with this in practice

The most honest use of this reading is with the person present, not about them, behind their back. Reading the text with two heads together usually gives more than any application done in secret: the person being described confirms, corrects, and the conversation turns into a concrete agenda for working better.

The second good use is on both people at once. Much of the discomfort at work does not come from one person, but from the meeting of two — and reading both at the same time shows exactly where their methods clash. A lot of old friction gets resolved once you find out nobody was being difficult on purpose.

There is a third use almost nobody thinks of, and it is the cheapest of all: the person reading their own chart. A professional who knows they need context can ask for it, instead of carrying out the task badly and without a word. A good part of what a manager tries to guess, the employee will say, once they have the words for it.

The bad use, and it has to be said, is the spreadsheet. Sorting a whole team by sign, building teams by element, deciding a promotion by a transit: this turns a vocabulary into bureaucracy, and bureaucracy built on symbols is the worst kind.

Why the birth time matters here, and what to do without it

House 6 and house 10 — daily work and career — depend on the Ascendant, which changes every two hours. Without the time, they do not exist, and with them goes much of what this text described about routine and structure.

And asking an employee for their birth time is a delicate request that many people will not want to answer — which is legitimate and should be respected without pushing.

There is a way around this without embarrassment: offer the reading as a benefit, for whoever wants it, with the text delivered to the person themselves. Whoever is interested brings the time by their own choice, and whoever isn't does not need to explain anything. That is the difference between a development resource and a dossier.

Without the time, plenty remains: Mercury, Mars and Saturn by sign already describe communication, pace and relationship with structure, which are the three questions that give the most back on a team. The picture gets wider and stays usable.

A note on astrology in human resources

It is worth knowing that this has already been tried at scale, and it failed. There are countries where graphology and unvalidated personality tests were used in hiring for decades, and the known result is always the same: worse decisions, dressed up as method.

The temptation to use a chart as a filter is strong precisely because hiring is expensive and uncertain. And that is exactly why the rule has to be strict: no reading goes into hiring, promotion or dismissal, and none is done without the consent of the person being read.

What is left is a tool for getting along, which is what astrology has always been good at. It describes how people function, and function is exactly what is missing when two competent people cannot work together.

Your chart has ten points and twelve houses, and the sun sign is one tenth of that. Date, time and place of birth are what separate a table from a chart.

Frequently asked questions about astrology at work

Can I use astrology to hire someone?

No. Choosing a person by birth date is discrimination with friendly vocabulary, and in many places it is illegal. This has no place in selection, promotion or dismissal — it is for understanding someone you already work with.

Do I need to tell the person I read their chart?

You do, and it is not a formality. Reading a subordinate's chart behind their back is the same as reading their diary; the fact that the information is symbolic changes nothing about the nature of the act. The best use is with the person there too, reading the text with two heads.

Does the reading measure performance?

It does not measure performance, does not predict outcomes and does not say whether someone is good at their job. If you want to know whether the person delivers, look at what they deliver. What the chart describes is how they work: communication, pace, response to pressure and the kind of structure they can handle.

Can you build a team by sign?

No, and that is the worst possible use of this. Sorting a team by sign or pairing people up by element turns a vocabulary into bureaucracy, and the result is a worse decision dressed up as method.

Does it work without the birth time?

It works with less. House 6 and house 10 depend on the Ascendant and disappear without the time, and with them much of what can be said about routine and structure. Mercury, Mars and Saturn by sign still describe communication, pace and relationship with deadlines.

How we interpret your chart

Methodology

The interpretation follows the Shelly Gonella method — a well-known astrologer who never reads a position in isolation.

01

Every reading combines planet, sign, house, aspects, ruler of the house and position of the ruler, identifying patterns that repeat in your chart.

02

The result is an integrated interpretation, made to turn astrological information into clarity, real understanding and practical use.

Have you ever gone to an astrology site, generated your birth chart and started reading each position separately?

"Moon in Pisces."

"Venus in Gemini."

"Uranus in House 7."

You get dozens of interpretations but, in the end, you still do not understand how any of it applies to your life.

Worse still: many people end up concluding that "astrology does not work" when, in fact, the problem is how the chart was interpreted. A birth chart is not a collection of loose meanings.

In professional astrology there is a methodology of reading. There is an order, criteria and specific guidelines that show which elements carry more weight, how they relate to each other and which patterns really repeat. That is what turns information into understanding. It was for that reason that I developed my method of interpretation.

Instead of simply explaining what each planet, sign or house means, I answer the question that really matters:

"What do I do with this?"

How does that position influence my relationships? My career? My challenges? My talents? My decisions?

Because astrology only makes sense when it stops being a list of traits and becomes a practical tool for understanding who you are, why certain patterns repeat and how to use that knowledge to live with more awareness.

Most charts explain what you have.

My method explains how everything works together, which patterns in your chart matter most and, above all, what to do with that information in practice.

That is the difference between reading a birth chart and truly understanding it.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about your reading

How does it work?

You enter your birth data and receive the graphic of your birth chart free, with the positions of the planets, signs, houses and aspects. Then you choose the area you want to understand first: the written interpretation is ready within 1 day and opens in your library, here inside the site.

Is the interpretation created from my chart?

Yes. The content is organised from the real positions of the planets, signs, houses, aspects and rulers of your birth chart — never from a standard text that would serve anyone with the same isolated position.

Do I need to know the exact time of birth?

For the free chart, no: without the time it is still possible to calculate the positions of the planets, but the Ascendant and the houses become unavailable or less precise. For the interpretation you buy, yes — the time is indispensable, because the Ascendant, the houses and much of what the reading analyses come from it. If you are not sure of the time, check your birth certificate before ordering: without it the result would be led into error.

How long until I receive my analysis?

Within 1 day of the payment clearing — and usually well before. It opens on its own in your library, and you can close the page while you wait.

Do I get a PDF? Does access expire?

Yes, the interpretation is available to download as a PDF. And access does not expire: after the purchase it stays in your account.

Can I buy more than one analysis?

Yes. After the first sign-up, you can order as many as you like with the same login — they are all kept in your library.

Is my data safe?

Yes. Your birth data is used only to calculate the birth chart and is never shared with third parties. The payment details go straight to whoever charges — this page does not store card numbers.
