Astrology and karma: what the word actually means

Karma has become a synonym for punishment, and that is not what the word means. Inside a birth chart it names something else, more useful and less frightening.

By Shelly Gonella in The astrology of every part of your life9 min read

The most misused word on the internet

Someone cuts the queue and the comment is ready-made: “karma will catch up with them.” The word has become that — the promise of a future punishment for whoever did something wrong, a cosmic justice system running late.

That is not what the word means, not in its origin and not in astrological use. In Sanskrit, karma means action. The idea attached to it is not punishment, but that action produces consequence — which is a far less dramatic claim, and much closer to what anyone actually experiences.

This difference is not a fuss over vocabulary. It decides what a “karmic” reading actually delivers: if karma is punishment, the reading becomes a list of what you did wrong in some life you do not remember. If karma is a pattern in motion, it becomes something else — a picture of what repeats in your life and of what that repetition is asking for.

What astrology calls karmic, in practice

When an astrologer says something is karmic, they are almost always talking about something quite concrete: a pattern that returns. The kind of relationship that repeats, the argument that changes faces and stays the same, the same standoff in three different jobs, the decision you have put off since you were twenty.

It is a metaphorical use of a religious word, and it is worth saying so honestly instead of hiding it: the astrologer is not claiming to have seen your past life. They are naming a structure that shows up in the chart and that, in your biography, shows itself as repetition.

And there is a practical consequence worth naming ahead of time: if the subject is pattern, the reading has to be checkable. You read a description and compare it against your biography — it fits or it does not. A reading that speaks of facts nobody can verify has taken away the one tool you had to judge it by.

Put this way, the thing loses its mystique and gains some use. Everyone has two or three of these — and most people already know what theirs are. What is usually missing is not the information; it is a description that is not so accusatory that it becomes impossible to look at head-on.

The Nodes, which are the central pair of this conversation

The most-used piece in this subject is the pair of lunar Nodes — North and South. They are not planets: they are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's, and that is why they are always in opposite signs.

The traditional reading treats this pair as a line between two things. The South Node describes what comes too easily: the skill you already arrived with, the behaviour you run to when you feel insecure, the comfortable place you go back to. The North Node describes the uncomfortable thing: what costs effort, what you avoid, and what the reading points to as the direction of growth.

The honest use of this is not obeying some direction written in the sky — it is recognising the movement. Almost everyone has a resource they overuse because it works, and that, precisely because it works, keeps them from developing what is missing. Ease is what gets in the way the most, and that sentence describes the whole pair.

Saturn, which is the least mystical part and the truest

If there is a name in the chart for “the bill that has not been paid yet,” it is Saturn.

The pattern is familiar: there is an area of your life where you have struggled from the start, where other people seem to have it easier, and where any progress takes twice the work. It is not bad luck and it is not punishment. It is where you were not given structure, and so you have to build it — and what gets built this way tends to hold firmer than what came easily.

And there is one sign that tells real Saturn apart from ordinary bad luck: it is specific. It is not “everything is difficult” — it is one nameable area where everything costs effort while the rest moves along fine. People who recognise their own usually recognise it in the first sentence, and have usually already cried over it.

This reading has one advantage over the mystical version: it is actionable. It does not ask you to believe anything, and it does not explain the difficulty by way of some forgotten crime. It explains it by lack of a tool, and a tool can be acquired.

What happens when karma turns into blame

This is the part of this piece that matters most, and it is a warning. There is a use of the word karma that does real harm, and it is a common one: the idea that whoever suffers attracted or deserved the suffering.

Stated plainly, that idea claims that the sick child, the person who was robbed, and whoever was born into poverty are paying off something. That is not spirituality; it is cruelty in pretty words, and it mainly serves people who do not want to look at structural injustice.

No serious reading works that way. What a reading of patterns can speak to is what you you do with what shows up — which is the only ground on which anyone has a choice —, and never what you deserved to have happen to you.

If a reading leaves you feeling that your pain is your own fault, it was not deep. It was badly done.

How to tell if a pattern really is a pattern

There is a simple test and it does not need astrology: the pattern survives when the characters change. If the same scene happens with three different bosses, in three companies, with three teams, the constant variable is you — and that is not an accusation, it is arithmetic.

The test has a second step that tends to hurt more and to matter more: notice how the pattern begins. Almost all of them start with a reaction of yours to something small — a tone of voice, a delay in answering, a decision made without you. The big scene comes later and is the one everyone remembers; the beginning is the part that can be changed.

The opposite also holds, and it is a relief: not everything that repeats is your pattern. Someone working in a toxic industry runs into similar bosses because the industry produces them. The question that tells the two cases apart is whether your reaction also repeats, not just the situation.

That is where the chart adds something: it describes your part of the circuit — what you do when that thing happens, before you even think about it. And your part is the only one there is anything to be done about.

What this kind of reading is not

It is not a record of a past life. Nobody has access to that, and anyone who describes your biography in another century is making up a story — usually a pleasant one, usually with you playing someone important.

It does not predict what will happen. A described pattern is not fate, and the whole use of the exercise depends on that: if it were fate, there would be no point reading it.

It is not therapy, and it does not replace it. Trauma, grief and suffering that does not lift call for professional support; a symbolic text does not treat any of that, however precise it may seem.

And it is not a moral verdict. There is no chart for good people and no chart for people paying off something. There is just a chart for a person, with ease in one corner and friction in another, like everyone else.

Where the idea of karma in Western astrology came from

It is worth knowing that this layer is recent, because almost nobody says so. Greek and medieval astrology did not speak of karma or reincarnation: they spoke of temperament, fortune and fate, which are different things.

The word enters the Western astrological vocabulary at the end of the 19th century, with the Theosophical Society, which mixed Indian concepts with European astrology. Alan Leo, the English astrologer who did the most to popularise the practice at that time, was a Theosophist — and it was through that door that karma, the Nodes as soul mission, and past lives entered the subject.

This does not invalidate anything, and it is worth saying: every tradition is made of layers added at some point. But it changes the weight of the claim. Karma in the chart is a reading a little over a hundred years old, applied to a system that is two thousand — and knowing this helps you not mistake an interpretation for an ancient law.

Your chart has ten points and twelve houses, and the sun sign is one tenth of that. Date, time and place of birth are what separate a table from a chart.

Frequently asked questions about astrology and karma

Is karma punishment?

No. In Sanskrit, karma means action, and the idea attached to it is that action produces consequence — not delayed punishment. Within a chart, what the word tends to name is a pattern that repeats in someone's life.

Does the reading show what I did in another life?

No, and nobody has access to that. Anyone who describes your biography in another century is making up a story. What can be read is the pattern of repetition in the chart as it stands now, and how it shows up in your current life.

What are the lunar Nodes?

They are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's, always in opposite signs. The traditional reading treats the South Node as what comes too easily and the North Node as the direction that costs effort — the ease is exactly what stands in the way of developing what is missing.

Is someone who suffers paying off some karma?

No, and that idea does real harm. Stated plainly, it claims that the sick child and the person born into poverty deserved what happened to them. That is cruelty in pretty words, and no serious reading works that way.

Since when has astrology talked about karma?

Since the end of the 19th century, through the Theosophical Society, which mixed Indian concepts with European astrology. Greek and medieval tradition spoke of temperament and fortune, not karma. It is a layer just over a hundred years old on top of a system two thousand years old.

How we interpret your chart

Methodology

The interpretation follows the Shelly Gonella method — a well-known astrologer who never reads a position in isolation.

01

Every reading combines planet, sign, house, aspects, ruler of the house and position of the ruler, identifying patterns that repeat in your chart.

02

The result is an integrated interpretation, made to turn astrological information into clarity, real understanding and practical use.

Have you ever gone to an astrology site, generated your birth chart and started reading each position separately?

"Moon in Pisces."

"Venus in Gemini."

"Uranus in House 7."

You get dozens of interpretations but, in the end, you still do not understand how any of it applies to your life.

Worse still: many people end up concluding that "astrology does not work" when, in fact, the problem is how the chart was interpreted. A birth chart is not a collection of loose meanings.

In professional astrology there is a methodology of reading. There is an order, criteria and specific guidelines that show which elements carry more weight, how they relate to each other and which patterns really repeat. That is what turns information into understanding. It was for that reason that I developed my method of interpretation.

Instead of simply explaining what each planet, sign or house means, I answer the question that really matters:

"What do I do with this?"

How does that position influence my relationships? My career? My challenges? My talents? My decisions?

Because astrology only makes sense when it stops being a list of traits and becomes a practical tool for understanding who you are, why certain patterns repeat and how to use that knowledge to live with more awareness.

Most charts explain what you have.

My method explains how everything works together, which patterns in your chart matter most and, above all, what to do with that information in practice.

That is the difference between reading a birth chart and truly understanding it.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about your reading

How does it work?

You enter your birth data and receive the graphic of your birth chart free, with the positions of the planets, signs, houses and aspects. Then you choose the area you want to understand first: the written interpretation is ready within 1 day and opens in your library, here inside the site.

Is the interpretation created from my chart?

Yes. The content is organised from the real positions of the planets, signs, houses, aspects and rulers of your birth chart — never from a standard text that would serve anyone with the same isolated position.

Do I need to know the exact time of birth?

For the free chart, no: without the time it is still possible to calculate the positions of the planets, but the Ascendant and the houses become unavailable or less precise. For the interpretation you buy, yes — the time is indispensable, because the Ascendant, the houses and much of what the reading analyses come from it. If you are not sure of the time, check your birth certificate before ordering: without it the result would be led into error.

How long until I receive my analysis?

Within 1 day of the payment clearing — and usually well before. It opens on its own in your library, and you can close the page while you wait.

Do I get a PDF? Does access expire?

Yes, the interpretation is available to download as a PDF. And access does not expire: after the purchase it stays in your account.

Can I buy more than one analysis?

Yes. After the first sign-up, you can order as many as you like with the same login — they are all kept in your library.

Is my data safe?

Yes. Your birth data is used only to calculate the birth chart and is never shared with third parties. The payment details go straight to whoever charges — this page does not store card numbers.
