Astrology and presence: what the room notices

Presence is not beauty and it is not being outgoing. It is something noticed before anyone opens their mouth — and it has a description.

By Shelly Gonella in The astrology of every part of your life9 min read

The person the room notices

She walked in and the conversation changed temperature. She wasn't the most beautiful, didn't speak loudly, didn't do anything special — and everyone noticed. You've seen this happen before, and you'd probably struggle to explain what it was.

And you've seen the opposite too: someone good-looking, well-dressed, polite, who passes through without leaving a mark. The lazy conclusion is that the first person has charisma, which just names the phenomenon and explains nothing.

Presence isn't beauty, and it isn't extroversion. There are people of few words with a lot of presence, and talkative people with none. It is a different thing — and it is something a birth chart has a say on, because it comes from how someone occupies their own body and their own manner.

The Ascendant, which is the door

The Ascendant is the point of the chart that tradition links to appearance and first impressions — and it's the point most dependent on birth time, because it changes every two hours.

What it describes isn't a face: it's a way of arriving. How you enter a place, what you do before you know how the room feels, the speed at which you approach. Some people arrive taking up space, others arrive taking measure; some greet the whole room, others look for one familiar face.

There's a detail of this reading that tends to be the most recognised of all: the way of arriving shows up in full precisely when the person isn't thinking about it. In the lift, in the queue, in the waiting room, at the door of a party where they don't know anyone. That's why it's hard to fake and easy to spot in a description.

This matters more than it seems, because a first impression is formed in seconds and almost never revisited. And there's a common mismatch this reading solves: a lot of people are read in a way they don't recognise in themselves. Someone who arrives taking measure is read as arrogant; someone who arrives fast is read as pushy. Knowing what your door communicates lets you correct the reading without having to become a different person.

Venus, and the style that's yours

Venus is the piece of taste, and it's the one that describes personal aesthetics — what pleases you, what you find beautiful, what feels excessive to you. It's not what's fashionable; it's what works when you wears it.

The practical use of this is less glamorous and more useful than it sounds: almost everyone has spent years wearing a register that wasn't theirs, out of influence, for work, or because someone once said it would suit them. And the result is always the same — the outfit is right and the person looks like they're in costume.

It's worth noting this isn't aesthetic conservatism or an excuse to never change anything. Your own register doesn't mean the usual one — plenty of people discover that the register that suits them is far bolder than the one they'd been wearing out of caution.

What you're looking for in a reading like this is coherence, not improvement. When what a person wears speaks to who they are, that noise of playing a part disappears — and it's that noise, not beauty, that gets in the way of presence.

The Moon, and why presence has to do with being at ease

There's something almost everyone notices and nobody knows how to name: you can feel it when a person is comfortable with themselves. And that comfort completely changes the effect they have, regardless of anything else.

The Moon describes what makes someone feel safe — and there's the link. Someone in a setting that meets their own needs relaxes, and someone relaxed occupies space differently. The same person has presence in a circle of four and disappears at a party of eighty, or the other way round.

And there's a discomfort almost no one names: plenty of people spent their whole adolescence being called shy when it wasn't shyness — it was a setting that met none of what that person needed in order to relax. The word stuck, and the person came to believe a description made in just one scenario.

This turns into immediate practical advice, and it's far cheaper than a wardrobe overhaul: choosing the settings where you work. A lot of people who think they lack charisma are people hanging around the wrong kind of setting for themselves — and calling a mismatch of scene a personal flaw.

What astrology doesn't say about appearance

It doesn't say whether you're good-looking, and there's no such thing as a good-looking chart or an ugly one. Beauty is a cultural convention, and it changes by century, by country and by decade — no ancient symbol has an opinion on a standard invented by a magazine in the nineties.

It doesn't predict attraction, and this is the limit that disappoints most. It doesn't say who's going to like you, and there's no configuration that makes someone desired — that depends on another person, and another person isn't in your chart.

And it isn't beauty advice, and it's worth being firm about that: no procedure, haircut, diet or “colour that matches your sign” comes out of this. That's the territory of people who work with image, and mixing the two is what turns a text about presence into insecurity dressed up as a sale.

What's left is what this text described: how you arrive, what your door communicates, which aesthetic register speaks to you, and in what setting you work.

Presence and what you do with it

It's worth saying something uncomfortable about this subject, because it's sold in a crooked way everywhere: presence isn't a technique for getting things out of people. There's a whole industry that teaches posture, eye contact and dramatic pauses as tools of persuasion, and the result is almost always the opposite of what's promised.

The reason is simple, and everyone has felt it from the other side, probably in a negotiation or on a first date: technique shows. A person applying a method in a conversation produces exactly the feeling of being worked on, and that feeling destroys in two minutes whatever presence there was.

What works is more mundane and more lasting: being at ease, wearing what's actually yours, choosing the places where you work, and stopping the habit of correcting in yourself what never needed correcting. Presence is subtraction, not addition — is what shows up when a person stops being tense about how they're coming across.

Why birth time is decisive here

This is the most time-dependent reading of all. The Ascendant is the centre of the matter and it changes every two hours — two people born on the same day three hours apart are read completely differently by the same room.

Without the time, you're left with Venus and the Moon by sign, which still say something about taste and about comfort. What's lost is exactly the door: the first impression, the way of arriving, what people conclude before you speak.

If you don't know your time, it's worth checking your birth certificate before buying anything of this kind. It's the difference between the whole reading and half of it, and it is not a minor difference.

Where the idea of reading appearance in the sky comes from

It is old, and it used to be far more literal than it is today. Medieval manuals physically described the native through the Ascendant and its ruler: height, hair colour, face shape, marks on the skin. There were entire lists, and they were used to recognise people and even to locate lost objects.

None of that holds up today, and it is honest to say so plainly: physical appearance comes from genetics, and the old descriptions only worked in a small world, where everyone an astrologer saw looked much the same.

What survived was the behavioural half — the way of arriving, the way of presenting yourself, the register in which someone expresses themselves. And that half survived because it is the one that describes behaviour, which is the only ground astrology has ever had anything to say about.

Your chart has ten points and twelve houses, and the sun sign is one tenth of that. Date, time and place of birth are what separate a table from a chart.

Frequently asked questions about astrology and presence

Does the chart say if I'm good-looking?

No, and there's no such thing as a good-looking chart or an ugly one. Beauty is a cultural convention, and it changes by century, by country and by decade. What the chart describes is presence: how you arrive, what your first impression communicates, and which register you express yourself in.

Is presence the same as charisma or extroversion?

No. There are people of few words with a lot of presence, and talkative people with none. Presence has more to do with being at ease with yourself than with taking up space — which is why it changes so much from one setting to another.

Why is the Ascendant the point most mentioned on this subject?

Because tradition links it to first impressions, and it describes your way of arriving: what you do before you know how the room feels. It changes every two hours, which makes birth time decisive for this reading.

Does the reading give style or beauty advice?

No procedure, haircut, diet or “colour that matches your sign” comes out of it. That's the territory of people who work with image. What gets described is the aesthetic register that speaks to you, and the goal is coherence, not improvement.

Can I increase my magnetism?

Not with persuasion technique, which people can tell and which produces the opposite effect. What works is more mundane: being at ease, wearing what's actually yours, and choosing the settings where you work. Presence is subtraction, not addition.

How we interpret your chart

Methodology

The interpretation follows the Shelly Gonella method — a well-known astrologer who never reads a position in isolation.

01

Every reading combines planet, sign, house, aspects, ruler of the house and position of the ruler, identifying patterns that repeat in your chart.

02

The result is an integrated interpretation, made to turn astrological information into clarity, real understanding and practical use.

Have you ever gone to an astrology site, generated your birth chart and started reading each position separately?

"Moon in Pisces."

"Venus in Gemini."

"Uranus in House 7."

You get dozens of interpretations but, in the end, you still do not understand how any of it applies to your life.

Worse still: many people end up concluding that "astrology does not work" when, in fact, the problem is how the chart was interpreted. A birth chart is not a collection of loose meanings.

In professional astrology there is a methodology of reading. There is an order, criteria and specific guidelines that show which elements carry more weight, how they relate to each other and which patterns really repeat. That is what turns information into understanding. It was for that reason that I developed my method of interpretation.

Instead of simply explaining what each planet, sign or house means, I answer the question that really matters:

"What do I do with this?"

How does that position influence my relationships? My career? My challenges? My talents? My decisions?

Because astrology only makes sense when it stops being a list of traits and becomes a practical tool for understanding who you are, why certain patterns repeat and how to use that knowledge to live with more awareness.

Most charts explain what you have.

My method explains how everything works together, which patterns in your chart matter most and, above all, what to do with that information in practice.

That is the difference between reading a birth chart and truly understanding it.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about your reading

How does it work?

You enter your birth data and receive the graphic of your birth chart free, with the positions of the planets, signs, houses and aspects. Then you choose the area you want to understand first: the written interpretation is ready within 1 day and opens in your library, here inside the site.

Is the interpretation created from my chart?

Yes. The content is organised from the real positions of the planets, signs, houses, aspects and rulers of your birth chart — never from a standard text that would serve anyone with the same isolated position.

Do I need to know the exact time of birth?

For the free chart, no: without the time it is still possible to calculate the positions of the planets, but the Ascendant and the houses become unavailable or less precise. For the interpretation you buy, yes — the time is indispensable, because the Ascendant, the houses and much of what the reading analyses come from it. If you are not sure of the time, check your birth certificate before ordering: without it the result would be led into error.

How long until I receive my analysis?

Within 1 day of the payment clearing — and usually well before. It opens on its own in your library, and you can close the page while you wait.

Do I get a PDF? Does access expire?

Yes, the interpretation is available to download as a PDF. And access does not expire: after the purchase it stays in your account.

Can I buy more than one analysis?

Yes. After the first sign-up, you can order as many as you like with the same login — they are all kept in your library.

Is my data safe?

Yes. Your birth data is used only to calculate the birth chart and is never shared with third parties. The payment details go straight to whoever charges — this page does not store card numbers.
