What an annual profection is

It is the house of the year: one house of your chart for each year of life, starting with the first on the day you were born. At 1 it is house 2; at 2, house 3; and so on up to house 12, at 11 years old. At 12 the wheel closes and everything starts again at house 1.

The calculation fits in one line: divide the age by twelve and keep the remainder; that remainder plus one is the house of the year. At 25, 25 divided by 12 gives 2 with 1 left over — house 2. It needs no ephemeris, no hour and no city: it needs the age you turned at your last birthday.

It is the simplest technique in traditional astrology, and that is exactly why it is a good place to start: you can check it by hand, and you can check it against your own life.

The table of ages

Seven turns fit into a long life. The table below holds for anybody, because no chart comes into this part:

Look at the ages of house 1. Twelve, twenty-four, thirty-six: these are the ages at which the wheel starts over, and tradition reads them as years of personal turning. It is no coincidence that they fall near the turning points everybody already names.

The lord of the year, and the count that holds for all twelve Ascendants

The lord of the year is the planet that rules the sign of the profected house. This is where your chart comes in: the house is arithmetic, but WHICH sign it occupies depends on your Ascendant. With the Ascendant in Leo, house 2 is Virgo — so, at 25, the lord of the year is Mercury.

And there is a regularity almost no text publishes, because it only shows up when you count: in every twelve years, everybody gets exactly two years of Mercury, two of Venus, two of Mars, two of Jupiter, two of Saturn, one of the Sun and one of the Moon.

It holds for all twelve Ascendants, with no exception — it was counted, one by one. The reason is traditional rulership: five planets rule two signs each and the two lights rule one. Any turn of twelve signs passes through the seven in the same proportion, wherever it starts. The Ascendant changes AT WHICH age each planet has the floor, not how many times.

Twelve years is not the Jupiter return

The two calculations run side by side and they are not the same. The profection wheel closes in exactly twelve years, and Jupiter takes 11.861 years to go once round the zodiac — measured with the same ephemeris this site uses to build charts.

The difference is 0.139 year per turn, about fifty days. It looks like little and it does not go away: over seven turns, which is what fits in a life of eighty-four years, it becomes almost a whole year. Someone who is 84 has had seven years of house 1 and seven Jupiter returns, and the two stopped coinciding along the way.

It is a small detail with a practical consequence: if someone tells you the house 1 year is “the Jupiter return”, ask for both dates. After thirty they no longer fall on the same birthday.

What you do with the house of the year in practice

The profection is there to choose where to look, and using it takes three steps:

• Find the house. The remainder of your age divided by twelve, plus one — or the block at the top of this page, which does the arithmetic by your device's clock.
• Look at which sign that house falls in on your chart, and which planet rules that sign. That planet is the lord of the year, and it is the one the reading speaks about first.
• Look at where that planet is — which house, which sign, with which aspects. A well-placed lord of the year and a badly placed one give different years with the same profected house.

And one observation that separates a serious reading from superstition: the house of the year does not cancel out the rest. It is a filter, not a verdict — if a long transit is happening in house 7, it goes on happening in the year of house 3.

Where the technique came from

Profection comes from Hellenistic astrology and reached us through the medieval Arab world — the name comes from the Latin profectio, a departure, the act of leaving one place for another. The house of the year is literally where the reading “departs” from that year.

What tradition did with it, and what is still the honest use: choosing where to look. In a chart with ten points and twelve houses, the profection says which house and which planet have the floor for the next twelve months — and that is different from saying what will happen.

What the profection does not say

It does not predict events, and that is not what it is about. The profection points at an area and a planet; what happens there depends on you, on the people around you and on everything astrology does not see.

And there is a limit to the technique, which is honest to declare: a profection on its own is a wide piece of information. Everybody turning 25 this year is in the year of house 2 — millions of people with the same house of the year. What individualises it is the rest: which sign that house is in, where the lord of the year sits in your chart, and what else is happening there. The house comes from the age; the meaning comes from the chart.

And the usual limit: astrology does not predict facts, does not diagnose anyone and does not decide for anyone. These are tendencies, and a tendency is something you work with.
