Solar return: what it is, and why it hardly ever falls on your birthday

The solar return is the chart of the instant the Sun goes back to its natal degree. Measured: it falls on the birthday 57% of the time.

What the solar return is

The solar return is the chart of the sky drawn for the exact instant the Sun goes back to the degree, minute and second it was in when you were born. It is an ordinary birth chart — with an Ascendant, houses, planets and aspects — only for the return, not for the beginning.

The idea is old and simple: the Sun takes a year to go round, and the instant it meets its own starting place again marks the beginning of another cycle. The chart of that instant describes the climate of the following twelve months.

What changes from one year to the next is everything except the Sun. It is always in the same degree — that is the definition of the thing. The Moon, the planets, the Ascendant and the houses change completely, and that is where the reading comes from.

It hardly ever falls on your birthday

This is the fact that most surprises people hearing about it for the first time, and it is arithmetic. The calendar year has 365 days; the Sun’s year has 365 days, 5 hours and 49 minutes. Those spare six hours push the return later every year — until a 29th of February gives back a whole day at once and it moves back.

Measured across 16,000 returns, from 200 births drawn at random between 1940 and 1989, in the Brasília time zone:

The return fallsHow often
on the birthday57.1%
on the day before36.0%
on the day after6.8%

Almost half of all solar returns do not happen on the birthday. And the hour hardly ever matches: only 34.2% of them fall within six hours of the exact birth time. The rest spread out, and the return can happen thirty-three hours away from the instant the person celebrates.

An example, to see the walk. Born on 12 March 1985 at 2.30 p.m. Brasília time:

YearInstant of the return
198612 Mar at 20h18
198713 Mar at 02h03
198812 Mar at 07h57
198912 Mar at 13h40
199012 Mar at 19h31
199113 Mar at 01h20
199212 Mar at 06h59
199312 Mar at 12h56

The clock moves almost six hours forward every year, crosses midnight, and the leap year brings it back to the morning. It is a four-year cycle, and it repeats for a lifetime.

Where you are on the day matters, and it can be measured

The instant of the return is the same for everyone born in that degree — it is astronomical. What changes with the place is the Ascendant and, with it, the houses: where each planet of the year lands. That is why the practice of travelling on your birthday exists.

The question nobody answers with a number is: travel how far? Measured across 20,000 instants drawn at random over a year, with the same formula this site uses to build charts:

Leaving São Paulo forChanges the Ascendant signChanges the Midheaven sign
Rio de Janeiro12.1% of the time11.9%
Porto Alegre15.2%15.0%
Salvador27.7%28.0%
New York66.1%90.6%
Lisbon80.3%100%

The honest reading of this table: a trip inside Brazil almost never changes the sign of the Ascendant — it moves the degree. São Paulo and Rio separate the Ascendant by 3.5 degrees on average, and 4.7 at worst. Anyone who really wants a different Ascendant in the chart of the year needs another continent.

That does not make the short trip useless: moving the Ascendant a few degrees shifts the cusps of every house, and a planet sitting on an edge changes house. But it is a decision about degrees, not about signs — and it is worth knowing that before buying a ticket.

What the solar return shows

Reading a chart of the year starts with three things, in this order:

After that comes the comparison with the natal chart, which is what separates a reading from a horoscope: the solar return only means something against the birth chart. The same Saturn in the 10th house of the year is a heavy promotion for someone with a strong natal Saturn and a year of demands for someone without one.

What it does not do

It does not name events, and no chart does. What it describes is the ground: the areas that come forward, the theme that repeats, where there is pressure and where there is an opening. A year with the 4th house emphasised talks about home and family — which fits a move, a birth and a renovation, and astrology does not choose which.

It also does not replace the birth chart. The natal chart is who you are and never changes; the solar return is the climate of twelve months. Reading the second without the first is reading the weather forecast without knowing which city you live in.

A limit said out loud, because it is also part of reading seriously: none of this is a diagnosis, and decisions about health, money or a life together are made with people trained for that. The chart of the year helps you understand the ground; it does not sign anything for you.

Frequently asked questions about the solar return

Does the solar return replace the birth chart?

No. The birth chart is who you are, and it never changes; the solar return is the climate of twelve months, and it only means anything read AGAINST the natal chart. A solar return with Saturn in the 10th house says different things to someone who already has a strong natal Saturn and to someone who does not.

Is it worth travelling on your birthday to change the solar return?

It is an old practice, and its effect is measurable. Where you are at the instant of the return decides the Ascendant and, with it, the houses of the chart of the year. Measured across 20,000 instants: going from São Paulo to Rio changes the Ascendant sign 12.1% of the time; going to Salvador, 27.7%; going to Lisbon, 80.3%. In other words: inside Brazil the trip almost never changes the sign, only the degree. Anyone who wants a different Ascendant on purpose needs another continent — or a lot of luck with the clock.

Does the solar return predict events?

It describes the ground of the twelve months: which areas of life come forward, which theme repeats, where there is pressure and where there is an opening. What it does not do is name the episode. A chart of the year with the 4th house emphasised talks about home and family, and that fits a move, a birth and a renovation.

Do I need the exact birth time?

You do, for two reasons. The degree of your natal Sun is the target of the return, and the Sun moves one degree a day — without a time, the instant of the return is off by as much as a whole day. And the Ascendant of the return, which is the most talked about piece of it, changes every two hours. A chart of the year built on a guessed hour is someone else’s year.

When does it start counting?

From the instant of the return to the next one — twelve months, not the calendar year. A good part of the tradition also reads a month of overlap at each end, because the climate does not switch over in the space of an hour.

How we interpret your chart

Methodology

The interpretation follows the Shelly Gonella method — a well-known astrologer who never reads a position in isolation.

01

Every reading combines planet, sign, house, aspects, ruler of the house and position of the ruler, identifying patterns that repeat in your chart.

02

The result is an integrated interpretation, made to turn astrological information into clarity, real understanding and practical use.

Have you ever gone to an astrology site, generated your birth chart and started reading each position separately?

"Moon in Pisces."

"Venus in Gemini."

"Uranus in House 7."

You get dozens of interpretations but, in the end, you still do not understand how any of it applies to your life.

Worse still: many people end up concluding that "astrology does not work" when, in fact, the problem is how the chart was interpreted. A birth chart is not a collection of loose meanings.

In professional astrology there is a methodology of reading. There is an order, criteria and specific guidelines that show which elements carry more weight, how they relate to each other and which patterns really repeat. That is what turns information into understanding. It was for that reason that I developed my method of interpretation.

Instead of simply explaining what each planet, sign or house means, I answer the question that really matters:

"What do I do with this?"

How does that position influence my relationships? My career? My challenges? My talents? My decisions?

Because astrology only makes sense when it stops being a list of traits and becomes a practical tool for understanding who you are, why certain patterns repeat and how to use that knowledge to live with more awareness.

Most charts explain what you have.

My method explains how everything works together, which patterns in your chart matter most and, above all, what to do with that information in practice.

That is the difference between reading a birth chart and truly understanding it.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about your reading

How does it work?

You enter your birth data and receive the graphic of your birth chart free, with the positions of the planets, signs, houses and aspects. Then you choose the area you want to understand first: the written interpretation is ready within 1 day and opens in your library, here inside the site.

Is the interpretation created from my chart?

Yes. The content is organised from the real positions of the planets, signs, houses, aspects and rulers of your birth chart — never from a standard text that would serve anyone with the same isolated position.

Do I need to know the exact time of birth?

For the free chart, no: without the time it is still possible to calculate the positions of the planets, but the Ascendant and the houses become unavailable or less precise. For the interpretation you buy, yes — the time is indispensable, because the Ascendant, the houses and much of what the reading analyses come from it. If you are not sure of the time, check your birth certificate before ordering: without it the result would be led into error.

How long until I receive my analysis?

Within 1 day of the payment clearing — and usually well before. It opens on its own in your library, and you can close the page while you wait.

Do I get a PDF? Does access expire?

Yes, the interpretation is available to download as a PDF. And access does not expire: after the purchase it stays in your account.

Can I buy more than one analysis?

Yes. After the first sign-up, you can order as many as you like with the same login — they are all kept in your library.

Is my data safe?

Yes. Your birth data is used only to calculate the birth chart and is never shared with third parties. The payment details go straight to whoever charges — this page does not store card numbers.
