The sign of Venus says HOW you love; the house says WHERE the affection happens. They are two different questions, and the second is almost never asked. Venus in Taurus describes someone who loves slowly and to last; Venus in Taurus in house 6 describes that same affection showing up in the everyday routine, and in house 9 describes the same person falling for whoever comes from far away. It is another love life, with the same sign.

And there is a second thing the house says and the sign does not: where you spend money and where you look for beauty. Venus is not only love, it is taste, worth and pleasure. The house shows in which area of life those three concentrate, and that usually explains a whole budget better than any spreadsheet.

The same observation that applies to Mercury applies here: the house of Venus is almost always the house of your Sun or one next to it. It never moves more than 47 degrees from the Sun, and a house averages 30, so it fits, at most, one or two houses away.

And the hard difference of this series has to be said before anything else: the house depends on the exact time of birth. The whole chart turns about one degree every four minutes, and a house boundary passes in around two hours. Whoever guesses the time does not get an approximate reading, they get somebody else's reading.

Having Venus in the 9th house means you fall in love with whoever opens the world. Affection happens on the horizon. This person is enchanted by the foreigner, by whoever teaches, by whoever has a large idea, and distance, instead of getting in the way, is usually part of the attraction.

The 9th house is what lies far away: travel, long study, language, belief, the other country. Venus there usually writes somebody's love story in more than one place in the world, and almost always with somebody who came from outside, from another city, another culture, another religion.

And here is what hardly any text writes down: what this person loves in the other is the world he opens, and not the other person. It is the most useful distinction of this house. As long as the other person stands for a horizon, teaching, travelling together, thinking differently, the infatuation continues. When the relationship turns into the everyday, this Venus feels it has ended, and it has not always ended: it has only left the ground where she knows how to love.

There is a second piece that changes everything: which sign that Venus is in, the way that affection happens in this area. Venus in the 9th house in Sagittarius is the most travelling version possible; in Cancer, it loves the foreigner and wants him to stay home. The house says WHERE; the sign says HOW.

It shows in the distance, physical or cultural, between this person and the one she loves. These are concrete signs, the kind you recognise in your own week:

• falls in love with people from outside, another city, another country, another culture
• dates at a distance more often than average, and bears it better
• learns a language for love, and that is a common story here
• spends on travel, courses and books without finding it expensive
• admires whoever knows, and admiration is part of the desire
• gets bored when the relationship turns into domestic routine alone

Notice what this list does not say. It does not say the person is inconstant or a dreamer, two labels this placement carries and which describe the excess, not the placement. It says her affection happens on the ground of the horizon.

The strength is admiration: this person loves upwards. She chooses whoever makes her grow and grows alongside, and since most relationships come to a standstill, choosing by horizon builds a life with more world inside it. Many people with this placement changed country, language or belief because of a person, and did not regret it.

In practice that turns into three useful things: an openness to what is different that builds an international life; an ability to learn from the one she loves, which makes the relationship worth two; and a generosity of horizon that makes the partner want more from his own life.

That strength does best in international work, teaching, travel, translation, publishing, a cause and any arrangement with world inside it. And it does badly in a closed routine, in a life with neither travel nor study and in any relationship where growing is treated as a threat.

There are two, and they are opposites: the excess is admiration turning into idealisation, and the deficiency is somebody who gave up wanting anything precisely in this area of life. The Shelly Method reads every archetype through four faces, the light, the shadow, the excess and the deficiency, and it is the last of them that hardly any text mentions.

The excess is loving the idea of the person: distance helps keep the image intact, and living together undoes it. It also shows up as an elegant escape, when the relationship gets hard, a trip appears, a course, an opportunity far away. It is not always a coincidence.

The deficiency is the opposite and goes unnoticed for years: the person simply stopped expecting pleasure from here. Here she is the person who closed the horizon. She stopped travelling, stopped studying, stopped taking an interest in what is different, usually after a relationship that demanded that of her. And she lives with a background boredom she does not connect with what she gave up. It is the most expensive loss of this placement.

Both faces have the same raw material, and that is why the repair is the same: an admiration that needs daily life, and not less horizon. It is not solved by asking the person to be more realistic, the horizon is what moves her. It is solved by checking the real person up close before deciding your life: actual living together, not a holiday, and that is what the sign of Venus and the rest of the chart show.

Every house has a pair, and the pair of 9 is house 3. They are not separate themes: they are the two ends of the same pair, and the excess in one shows up as a lack in the other. The 3rd house is the opposite: what is near, the everyday, the daily conversation. A Venus in the 9th very turned towards the far away is usually inattentive to whoever is beside her, the neighbour, the sibling, the partner on a Tuesday.

And that is where the relationship actually happens. Without the 3rd house, the 9th turns into a collection of enchantments that never becomes a life together.

It matures when the person discovers that everyday life with somebody is also a world, and that discovery is worth more than any attempt to learn to settle. Admiration stays the talent; what changes is that it comes to survive living together.

There is a rhythm that helps to understand the arc, and it belongs to Venus herself: every nineteen months, more or less, she goes retrograde, for some six weeks. In those weeks the subject of this house tends to ask for review, and here they usually stir up travel, a visa, a course and somebody who lives far away.

Maturity here is not learning to want less world. It is the person coming to distinguish admiration for what someone is from admiration for what he stands for. A mature Venus in the 9th house goes on loving upwards, and comes to look up close, and it is that looking that turns idealisation into real admiration.

No honest text gives an age for this. The arc depends on the whole chart and on the life the person had.
