The sign of Venus says HOW you love; the house says WHERE the affection happens. They are two different questions, and the second is almost never asked. Venus in Taurus describes someone who loves slowly and to last; Venus in Taurus in house 6 describes that same affection showing up in the everyday routine, and in house 9 describes the same person falling for whoever comes from far away. It is another love life, with the same sign.

And there is a second thing the house says and the sign does not: where you spend money and where you look for beauty. Venus is not only love, it is taste, worth and pleasure. The house shows in which area of life those three concentrate, and that usually explains a whole budget better than any spreadsheet.

The same observation that applies to Mercury applies here: the house of Venus is almost always the house of your Sun or one next to it. It never moves more than 47 degrees from the Sun, and a house averages 30, so it fits, at most, one or two houses away.

And the hard difference of this series has to be said before anything else: the house depends on the exact time of birth. The whole chart turns about one degree every four minutes, and a house boundary passes in around two hours. Whoever guesses the time does not get an approximate reading, they get somebody else's reading.

Having Venus in the 3rd house means you seduce through conversation and need a subject in order to love. Affection comes in through the word. This person is enchanted by whoever speaks well, writes beautifully, has a repertoire, and is disenchanted the moment the conversation ends, however much everything else is in place.

The 3rd house is the near surroundings: siblings, neighbours, what is learned early, the everyday exchange. Venus there makes all of it pleasant, the person has a way with people close by, writes with charm and is usually the peace of her own family or her own building.

And here is what hardly any text writes down: the flirtation of this placement is mental, and that is why it tends to get into trouble without noticing. A Venus in the 3rd talks well with everybody and does not calculate the effect. From outside it looks like interest; from inside it is only a good conversation. Knowing this saves a misunderstanding, and nothing needs changing beyond noticing.

Notice what this list does not say. It does not say the person is seductive or superficial, two labels this placement carries and which describe the excess, not the placement. It says her affection needs exchange and words.

The strength is conversation: it is pleasant to be near this person. She knows how to start a subject, makes the other person feel interesting and turns ordinary company into something good, and since most relationships wear out for lack of conversation, that is the talent that keeps them alive.

In practice that turns into three useful things: an ease in making friends anywhere, which builds a close and useful network; a writing that enchants and opens doors; and an ability to settle a family or neighbourhood quarrel by talking.

That strength does best in communication, writing, teaching, sales, service, translation and any work of close contact. And it does badly in isolated work with no interlocutor, in an environment where talking is a nuisance and in any arrangement with no novelty at all.

There are two, and they are opposites: the excess is conversation becoming the whole relationship, and the deficiency is somebody who gave up wanting anything precisely in this area of life. The excess is staying on the pleasant surface: the person talks beautifully with somebody for months and never truly gets close, and calls that connection. It also shows up as an affective dispersion, three good conversations at once, and none that holds up through a hard week.

The deficiency is the opposite and goes unnoticed for years: the person simply stopped expecting pleasure from here. Here she is the person who went quiet. She stopped writing, stopped starting subjects, stopped coming close, usually after a misunderstanding in which her friendliness was read as something else. And she was left with a life of short, polite conversation, and a loneliness she calls discretion.

Both faces have the same raw material, and that is why the repair is the same: a conversation that needs depth, and not fewer subjects. It is not solved by asking the person to talk less, words are her way of coming close. The 9th house is the opposite: the horizon, the long study, what takes years.
