The sign of Venus says HOW you love; the house says WHERE the affection happens. They are two different questions, and the second is almost never asked. Venus in Taurus describes someone who loves slowly and to last; Venus in Taurus in house 6 describes that same affection showing up in the everyday routine, and in house 9 describes the same person falling for whoever comes from far away. And there is a second thing the house says and the sign does not: where you spend money and where you look for beauty. Venus is not only love, it is taste, worth and pleasure. And here is what hardly any text writes down: the problem of this placement is not a lack of love: it is a lack of witness. She loves a great deal, cares without fanfare and helps without telling, and then feels alone, because nobody saw. It is not self-pity; it is the arithmetical consequence of an affection that happens where nobody is looking. And the repair begins by letting somebody see.

There is a second piece that changes everything: which sign that Venus is in, the way that affection happens in this area. Venus in the 12th house in Pisces is the most given-over of the twelve versions; in Capricorn, it loves quietly and holds the relationship up alone for years. In practice that turns into three useful things: a capacity to love with no demands that genuinely heals people; a sensitivity that notices suffering before it is spoken; and a rich inner life, which becomes art, faith or care when it takes a form.

That strength does best in care, therapy, art, spirituality, a social cause, backstage work and any craft of serving without appearing. And it does badly in an environment of constant exposure, in an arrangement where attention has to be fought for and anywhere saying no is a daily matter.

There are two, and they are opposites: the excess is surrender turning into invisible sacrifice, and the deficiency is somebody who gave up wanting anything precisely in this area of life. The excess is giving until she disappears: the person bears an unequal relationship for years, looks after somebody who does not look after her and calls that a great love. It also shows up as a hidden love, the passion nobody knows about, the bond that cannot be spoken, and the specific loneliness of loving with no one to tell.

The deficiency is the opposite and goes unnoticed for years: the person simply stopped expecting pleasure from here. Here she is the person who closed up.
