The column of twelve paragraphs you know is less than a hundred years old, and it was born from a story about a royal baby's birth. It is the newest part of a tradition twenty-four centuries old, and the only part of it most people have ever seen.

This matters for a practical reason. When somebody says astrology is that, twelve generic paragraphs that fit anybody, they are describing a 1930 format with precision, and not the practice that produced it. Knowing the invention date of the column is the quickest way to keep the two apart.

Printed astrology for a wide public had already existed for two centuries, in almanac form. The most famous of them is British and is still published: the one by Francis Moore, a self-taught physician and astrologer, which first came out in 1697 with weather forecasts and took the name Vox Stellarum, the voice of the stars, in 1700.

It sold heavily. In 1768 it printed 107 thousand copies, in a country with a fraction of today's population. And it is worth noticing what it carried: weather forecasts, a tide table, a calendar of Moon phases and observations about the year, all of it aimed at the world, and none of it aimed at the reader. Nobody looked in it for their own name or their own date of birth.

That is the distance 1930 covered in one go. The almanac talked about the sky; the column began to talk about you, or, more exactly, about one twelfth of everybody, presented as though it were you.

Princess Margaret was born on 21 August 1930, and three days later the Sunday Express published her chart. John Gordon, the editor, wanted the best-known astrologer in the country, Cheiro. Cheiro was unavailable, and the job fell to his assistant, R. H. Naylor.

The piece ran on 24 August 1930 and drew readers. A paper that finds an audience repeats the formula, and the Sunday Express asked for more. Nothing in it was a long-term plan for astrology: it was an editor with a page to fill and a subject that sold.

In one of the following pieces, Naylor wrote that a British aircraft would be in danger between 8 and 15 October of that year. On 5 October 1930, the airship R101 crashed in France and killed 48 people.

The date was off by three days, and that mattered to nobody. The paper headlined the hit, Naylor became a celebrity and was given two weekly columns, one about world events and another about that week's birthdays. Competitors copied the format within months.

Keep this part in mind, because it explains the rest: the newspaper horoscope became an institution by getting a tragedy right within three days. The format's taste for the spectacular prediction is there in its cradle.

The birthday column had a problem of scale, and the solution to it is the modern horoscope. Writing for whoever has a birthday this week serves a small fraction of readers; the paper wanted to speak to all of them, every week.

So Naylor divided the Sun's path into twelve bands of thirty degrees, gave each the name of the matching sign, and began publishing the twelve paragraphs together. That way every reader had one of their own, and knowing the date of birth was enough. The column became Your Stars, and the format it created is the same one printed today in Portuguese, in Spanish and in any language.

The twelve slices themselves are not his invention: they are Babylonian, from the fifth century before Christ. What belongs to 1930 is the decision to use only those, and to treat the date of birth as sufficient data.

The word horoscope comes from Greek: hora, meaning hour, and skopos, meaning the one who watches. It named the degree of the zodiac rising on the horizon at the exact instant of birth, what today is called Ascendant.

Notice what happened: the 1930 format kept the name and threw away exactly what the name said. A column organised by date of birth has no way of knowing the hour, and with no hour there is no Ascendant, no houses and no half of the chart.

What is left in the column is one piece out of eleven, the Sun sign. And the price of that can be measured. We counted 124,185 charts, every six hours between 1940 and 2025: Mercury is in the same sign as the Sun in 51.0% of them, and Venus in 23.7%. Almost half the people of your sign think from another one, and three out of four like things from another one. The Ascendant, which changes every two hours, disappears entirely.

There is a genuinely classical technique behind it, and it has a name: solar houses. The arithmetic is to count the twelve houses from the person's sign, instead of from the Ascendant they did not supply. It is old, it is legitimate, and it is what allows saying that a transit is stirring the work area for anyone who is a Leo.

What it delivers is a reading of an area of life, and not of a person. That is useful and it is honest when put that way. The trouble with the newspaper format was never the technique: it was selling its output as though it were somebody's portrait, and dressing it up with event predictions to earn a headline, which is the vice the R101 installed in the cradle.

That is why the horoscope of this house says, on the page itself, that it speaks of the sign and not of you, and that the reading which knows a person starts from their chart. The technique is Naylor's; the promise is another.

It is possible to say precisely what an honest column can deliver. It can point out which area of life a transit of the period is stirring for each of the twelve bands, and it can say what tends to happen when that transit goes through there. What it cannot do is speak of the temperament of whoever reads it, because temperament depends on ten pieces the date alone does not deliver.

It is a difference of one sentence, and it changes everything. A column starting with today you will feel is promising what it does not have; one starting with this week the sky stirs your work area is delivering exactly what the technique gives.

One point of vocabulary is worth recording, because it confuses many people. In everyday speech, horoscope became a synonym for the column, and birth chart took the rest. In older technical texts the two words name the same thing, and that is why an astrology book from the last century talks about a horoscope of birth without meaning any newspaper.

Almost nothing in the format, and everything in access to the calculation. In 1930, putting together one person's chart cost hours of arithmetic with paper tables, and that is why the paper needed a shortcut to speak to a million readers.

Today the same calculation takes milliseconds and comes free on any serious site. The 1930 shortcut goes on being published out of habit, and not out of technical need, the constraint that created the format stopped existing decades ago.

And the limit, said out loud: neither the column nor the chart predicts events. Astrology describes tendency and gives vocabulary for what a person already lives. Naylor's hit about the R101 is a good newspaper story, and a terrible example of what to expect from a reading.
