This blog has 529 texts. It has Venus in the twelve houses, Saturn in the twelve, Chiron in the twelve, the North Node and the South Node in the twelve. And it does not have, and will not have, the Descendant in the twelve — nor the Midheaven, nor the Imum Coeli, nor the Vertex. It is not a list left undone: it is that eleven of the twelve pages of each series would describe something that does not happen in the sky.

This page is the answer for anyone who searched for "Descendant in house 3" and found it odd not to get one. The short answer is that the question has a category error inside it. The long answer has numbers in it, and it is the rest of this text.

A point that IS a house does not fall in a house

The four angles of the chart are cusps: the place where a house begins. The Ascendant opens house 1, the Imum Coeli opens house 4, the Descendant opens house 7 and the Midheaven opens house 10. Asking which house the Descendant is in is like asking which block a corner is on: it is not on one, it separates two.

This is not school convention or an astrologer's taste — it is in the arithmetic that builds the chart. Cusp 7 is written as the Ascendant plus 180 degrees, and the Descendant is defined as the Ascendant plus 180 degrees. They are the same line, written twice with different names.

I measured it anyway, because a claim without a measurement is an opinion. The grid was 88 latitudes, from 66 degrees south to 66 degrees north, with 720 sidereal times in each one — 63,360 configurations, with the chart built four times in each, one per house system:

That is 63,360 configurations per column, with the formulas of the engine that builds this site's charts and the obliquity of 2026.

The bottom two rows change with the system, and that is the interesting part

The Ascendant and the Descendant stay where they are in all four systems. The Midheaven and the Imum Coeli do not. It is the only surprise in the table, and it explains a doubt that reaches us often: from someone who saw their own Midheaven marked in house 9 in one program and in house 10 in another.

The cause is easy to say. Placidus and Porphyry are QUADRANT systems: they start from the four angles and divide what is left between them, so the Midheaven is cusp 10 by construction. Equal houses and whole sign start from the Ascendant alone and count in steps of thirty degrees — the Midheaven is never consulted, and it ends up wherever the day's geometry puts it.

And it drifts a long way. In equal houses, the Midheaven lands in house 10 in 43.80% of the configurations and in house 9 in 43.86% — which means it sits in the 9th slightly more often than in the 10th. In whole sign, house 10 takes 61.99%, with house 9 and house 11 taking 16.34% and 16.35%. In both systems it reaches houses 8 and 12, and at high latitude it even touches house 1.

What that means in practice, for anyone reading their own chart: if your program shows the Midheaven in house 9, the program did not get it wrong and there is nothing exceptional about you — you are looking at a chart in equal houses or in whole sign, and there this happens to almost half of everyone. Switch the system to Placidus and it goes back to cusp 10.

What exists instead: the series of signs

What changes from chart to chart, in the four angles, is the SIGN. And that series exists in full, with the twelve of each one: the Ascendant through the 12 signs, which is the body and the first impression; the Descendant in the 12 signs, which is the other person and the partnership; the Midheaven in the 12 signs, which is the career and the public place; and the Imum Coeli in the 12 signs, which is the home, the family and the root.

Look at the pairing: the Descendant is the Ascendant plus 180 degrees, so the sign of your Descendant is always the opposite of the sign of your Ascendant. Ascendant in Aries, Descendant in Libra; Ascendant in Taurus, Descendant in Scorpio. The same goes for the Midheaven and the Imum Coeli. They are two pairs, not four loose points.

The Vertex stays out of half the chart

The Vertex is the only one of these points that really does change house — and even so, it does not reach six of them. It is the crossing of the prime vertical with the ecliptic on the setting side, and the word that carries everything is "setting": the rising half of the chart, which is houses 1, 2, 3, 10, 11 and 12, is out by definition, and not by custom.

In the same 63,360 configurations it showed up in houses 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, and in no other. A Vertex marked in house 1 or house 11 is almost always the Antivertex with the names swapped — both come out of the same calculation, and whoever writes the program has to decide which is which.

The rule you read around is tighter than that: "the Vertex sits between houses 5 and 8". It is true, and only from a certain latitude. Measured by bisection, the cut-off is at 27.71 degrees: above that no time of day puts the Vertex outside houses 5 to 8; below it, it goes to house 4 or to house 9 in about a third of charts.

The cut-off is not a round number because it is not a chosen number: it comes out of the obliquity of the ecliptic, which changes slowly. With today's obliquity, 23.44 degrees, the limit is 27.71; with 22 degrees it would be 25.92, and with 24 degrees, 28.42. The whole calculation is in Vertex in houses 5 to 8, with the table by city — and it is the reason this site does not have, and does not need, "Vertex in house 12".

And the traits of the twelve signs, where are they?

Outside the blog, on purpose: in horoscope, one page per sign. Anyone searching for "what the Aries person is like" or "what the Capricorn person cannot stand" finds it there, and not here.

The reason is that those twelve pages are not still text. Each one carries, next to the description of the sign, the week's forecast and the month's, remade when the sky moves. A blog piece on the same subject would be the same thing carved in stone: good on the day it was published and identical to itself three years later.
