Saturn retrograde: the dates, and why it never skips a year

Saturn spends 36.6% of the time retrograde — four and a half months a year, every year. See the dates to 2045 and what the phase asks for.

Is Saturn retrograde right now?

The calculation uses the same ephemeris that builds this site's birth charts, and the answer comes from your device's clock.

When is the next Saturn retrograde?

Saturn goes retrograde once a year, and never skips one. That changes the question: instead of "when is the next one", what usually matters more is "is it retrograde now?" — and on more than a third of the days in the year the answer is yes. The times below are Brasília time and come from the same ephemeris this site uses to cast charts.

Look at the middle column. The start date slides about two weeks forward each year: July 26, August 9, August 22, September 6. It is not irregularity — it is the difference between the Earth’s year and its next meeting with Saturn, and the next section explains where it comes from.

Why Saturn goes retrograde every year

Retrogradation is not the planet moving backwards: it is the Earth overtaking it on the inside, with the apparent motion reversing while that lasts. What decides the frequency, then, is how long the Earth takes to gain one full lap on the other planet.

Saturn takes twenty-nine and a half years to go once around the zodiac. It is so slow that the Earth overtakes it almost every time it completes a lap of its own: the meeting repeats every 378 days, thirteen more than a calendar year. That is why the retrogradation happens once a year, and why the date slides by two weeks.

It is the exact opposite of Mars, which is covered in Mars retrograde: Mars is fast enough that the Earth takes 25 months to overtake it, and that is why 38 of the 96 years between 1930 and 2025 had not a single day of Mars retrograde. With Saturn there was no such year — there were 93 periods in 96 years, without a gap.

Why the length barely changes

Measured over the same 93 periods: the shortest lasted 133.6 days and the longest, 141.4. The average is 137.9 — four and a half months.

That is 7.8 days of spread on a length of 138, and that steadiness is what separates Saturn from the inner planets. Mars varies from 60 to 81 days, a third more over a length less than half of this one. The cause is the same in both cases, and it is distance: the size of the loop depends on how close the two bodies pass, and the further out the planet, the less the distance between them changes from one meeting to the next.

The stretch retraced backwards keeps the same calm: between 6.6 and 7.0 degrees across all 93 periods. Mars retraces from 10 to 19.5 degrees, depending on the sign.

The further out, the more time retrograde

That logic has a predictable end, and the whole series is worth seeing at once. I measured the eight planets with the same ephemeris, over the same 96 years:

PlanetHow much of the timeEach period lasts
Venus7.2%about 42 days
Mars9.5%from 60 to 81 days
Mercury19%about 21 days
Jupiter29.9%from 117 to 124 days
Saturn36.6%from 134 to 141 days
Uranus40.7%from 149 to 154 days
Pluto43.1%from 156 to 162 days
Neptune43.2%from 157 to 160 days

The middle column rises from top to bottom, and it has a ceiling: 50%. A planet standing still in the sky would be retrograde exactly half the time, because the Earth would spend half of its lap approaching and half moving away. Neptune and Pluto, which barely move in ninety years, reach 43% — close to the ceiling, and never at it.

That changes what the word "retrograde" can explain. Something that happens on 43% of days does not tell one day from another. Reading the slow planets is about the HOUSE and the sign they are in, and the subject is covered in what a retrograde planet is.

Saturn’s shadow lasts almost a year

The shadow is the stretch of sky the planet covers moving forward before retracing it backwards. It opens on the day it crosses the degree where it will stop going back, and closes on the day it regains the degree where the retrogradation began.

In Saturn it runs from April to March of the following year: 329 days around a core of 137. Compare that with Mercury, where the shadow opens two weeks before and closes two after. The shell is almost three times the core, as in Mars — except that here it fills almost the whole year, and the next one starts before the previous has closed.

In practice this means the subject does not arrive on the published date. It shows up on the way out, as a commitment being set up; it comes back in the middle, to be checked; and it resolves on the way out of it, months later. Anyone looking only at the two middle dates thinks the period came out of nowhere.

What actually changes in Saturn retrograde

In tradition, Saturn governs the limit, the structure, the deadline and authority — what demands and what is demanded. What retrogradation does to each of them is the same thing, and it is recognisable:

And the limit said out loud holds: astrology does not predict redundancy, diagnoses nobody and decides for nobody. These are tendencies, and a tendency is something you work with.

What the phase asks for, and what is not worth postponing

There is no prohibition, and the arithmetic shows why: if you are 40, you have already lived through about fifteen years of Saturn retrograde. Some of the best agreements of your life were signed inside them.

What pays off: reviewing what is already standing. Renegotiating a deadline, rereading a contract, redoing a budget, asking for the raise that was left for later, closing what has already ended in practice. The phase favours whoever checks the agreement.

What yields less: taking on a new commitment to prove something to someone. Not because it will go wrong — because the reason is usually outside pressure, and that is exactly what this phase calls into question.

What is not worth postponing: a legal deadline, an enrolment, a treatment, surgery scheduled by the doctor, a signature with a date on it. None of those gets better for waiting four and a half months — and in Saturn the next clear window is always short: seven and a half months of direct motion are left, and the shadow eats a good part of them.

Saturn retrograde in your chart is another matter

Being born in one of those periods is not living a transit: it is a fixed trait. And it happens to 36.6% of people — more than one in three.

It is the most common of the natal retrogradations, and that changes how much it weighs. Natal Mercury retrograde happens to about 19%; Mars, to 9.5%; Venus, to 7.2%. A feature more than a third of people have distinguishes almost nothing on its own — it gets interesting once you look at WHERE Saturn is.

Someone with Saturn retrograde in the chart usually has a relationship of their own with authority: the inner measure is harder than the outer one, recognition from outside takes a while to convince, and the person holds herself to a standard nobody agreed with her. It is not a lack of Saturn — it is Saturn turned inward.

The house it fell in says in which area this happens, and that depends on the hour and city of birth. The text describing the natal retrogradation of every planet, with the proportions of each, is what a retrograde planet is. And if you want to read your Saturn by sign and by house, the series begins at Saturn in Aries.

Frequently asked questions about Saturn retrograde

Is Saturn retrograde right now?

The block at the top of this page answers by your device’s clock, and the odds of the answer being yes are high: Saturn spends 36.6% of the time retrograde. That is four and a half months a year, every year, without a single exception between 1930 and 2025.

How often does Saturn go retrograde?

Once a year, and in that it is the opposite of Mars. There were 93 periods between 1930 and 2025, and no calendar year went without at least one retrograde day. The date slides about two weeks forward each year, because Saturn’s meeting with the Earth repeats every 378 days and the year has 365.

How long does Saturn retrograde last?

About 138 days, and the measure barely varies: across the 93 periods from 1930 to 2025, the shortest lasted 133.6 days and the longest 141.4. That is 7.8 days of spread on a length of 138 — against 21 days of spread in Mars, which lasts less than half as long.

What should you not do during Saturn retrograde?

Nothing is forbidden, and the arithmetic shows why: if you are 40, you have already lived through about fifteen years of Saturn retrograde. Something that fills more than a third of everyone’s life does not explain a hard month. What the phase asks for is reviewing commitments already made, not taking on new ones to prove something.

What does it mean to have Saturn retrograde in the natal chart?

It is being born in one of those periods, and it happens to 36.6% of people — more than one in three. It is the most common of the natal retrogradations people talk about, and for that reason it describes less than a distinguishing trait: it describes a way of handling authority and one’s own inner measure, which Saturn’s house and sign fill in.

Saturn retrograde in brief

Saturn retrograde is not an event: it is a season. It fills more than a third of every year, and what the phase asks for is checking what was agreed instead of agreeing to something new. See yours free here.

How we interpret your chart

Methodology

The interpretation follows the Shelly Gonella method — a well-known astrologer who never reads a position in isolation.

01

Every reading combines planet, sign, house, aspects, ruler of the house and position of the ruler, identifying patterns that repeat in your chart.

02

The result is an integrated interpretation, made to turn astrological information into clarity, real understanding and practical use.

Learn more

Have you ever gone to an astrology site, generated your birth chart and started reading each position separately?

"Moon in Pisces."

"Venus in Gemini."

"Uranus in House 7."

You get dozens of interpretations but, in the end, you still do not understand how any of it applies to your life.

Worse still: many people end up concluding that "astrology does not work" when, in fact, the problem is how the chart was interpreted. A birth chart is not a collection of loose meanings.

In professional astrology there is a methodology of reading. There is an order, criteria and specific guidelines that show which elements carry more weight, how they relate to each other and which patterns really repeat. That is what turns information into understanding. It was for that reason that I developed my method of interpretation.

Instead of simply explaining what each planet, sign or house means, I answer the question that really matters:

"What do I do with this?"

How does that position influence my relationships? My career? My challenges? My talents? My decisions?

Because astrology only makes sense when it stops being a list of traits and becomes a practical tool for understanding who you are, why certain patterns repeat and how to use that knowledge to live with more awareness.

Most charts explain what you have.

My method explains how everything works together, which patterns in your chart matter most and, above all, what to do with that information in practice.

That is the difference between reading a birth chart and truly understanding it.

High-precision astronomical calculations, checked position by position to guarantee the accuracy of every sign, house and aspect in your chart.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about your reading

How does it work?

You enter your birth data and receive the graphic of your birth chart free, with the positions of the planets, signs, houses and aspects. Then you choose the area you want to understand first: the written interpretation is ready within 1 day and opens in your library, here inside the site.

Is the interpretation created from my chart?

Yes. The content is organised from the real positions of the planets, signs, houses, aspects and rulers of your birth chart — never from a standard text that would serve anyone with the same isolated position.

Do I need to know the exact time of birth?

For the free chart, no: without the time it is still possible to calculate the positions of the planets, but the Ascendant and the houses become unavailable or less precise. For the interpretation you buy, yes — the time is indispensable, because the Ascendant, the houses and much of what the reading analyses come from it. If you are not sure of the time, check your birth certificate before ordering: without it the result would be led into error.

How long until I receive my analysis?

Within 1 day of the payment clearing — and usually well before. It opens on its own in your library, and you can close the page while you wait.

Do I get a PDF? Does access expire?

Yes, the interpretation is available to download as a PDF. And access does not expire: after the purchase it stays in your account.

Can I buy more than one analysis?

Yes. After the first sign-up, you can order as many as you like with the same login — they are all kept in your library.

Is my data safe?

Yes. Your birth data is used only to calculate the birth chart and is never shared with third parties. The payment details go straight to whoever charges — this page does not store card numbers.
