When is the next Pluto retrograde?

Pluto goes retrograde once a year, and stays backwards for more than five months. That is 43.1% of all days — the second largest figure in the zodiac, behind Neptune retrograde by a tenth of a point. The times below are Brasília time and come from the same ephemeris this site uses to build charts.

Why the length grows with each decade

This is the only retrogradation table on this site whose current numbers would not fit the range of the last century — and it is not a calculation error.

From 1930 to 2025, the 95 periods lasted between 156.2 and 162.5 days. Those from 2026 to 2045 run from 162.4 to 164.2. The decade averages tell the whole story:

The two columns rise and fall together, and the cause is the most lopsided orbit in the solar system. Pluto passed the point closest to the Sun in 1989, at 29.7 astronomical units — closer in than Neptune has been in its whole life. Since then it has been moving away, and it will reach 40.4 in 2045. The farther out the planet is, the slower it appears to move, and the longer the Earth takes to undo the overtaking: the loop grows.

That is why the automatic rule that checks these tables was measured from 1930 to 2046, and not up to today. A rule carrying last century's range would fail the twenty CORRECT rows of the table on this page — and failing correct text is the worst thing a check can do.

How much Pluto redoes, and why it matters little

The stretch redone backwards runs between 2.2 and 2.8 degrees. That is five and a half months to undo less than three degrees of sky — under a tenth of a sign.

Compare it with Mercury retrograde, which redoes twelve degrees in three weeks, and the difference in kind becomes clear. In Mercury the retrograde is an event with a beginning, a middle and an end inside a month. In Pluto it is the way of walking of a planet that spends twenty years in one sign: it advances two degrees a year, and spends almost half of that year going back.

Pluto's shadow lasts more than a year

The shadow is the patch of sky the planet covers moving forward before redoing it backwards. In Pluto it lasts from 390 to 398 days, and the next shadow opens a month before the previous one closes: as with Neptune, there is no day on which it stands outside one.

This is worth saying out loud rather than repeating the word out of habit: a mark that covers the entire calendar prepares nobody for anything. In Jupiter retrograde, where three free months are left each year, the shadow still says something. Here it is only the geometry of the loop.

What actually changes in Pluto retrograde

In the modern tradition, Pluto governs power, what ends for good, what was hidden and what is not up for negotiation. What retrogradation does with that has one direction, and it is recognisable:

• The dispute turns inward. The arm wrestle that was being fought with someone else — a boss, a family, a person — becomes one with yourself. The question stops being who gives the orders and becomes where you give in, and why.
• Control shows itself for what it is. The organising that looked like care shows itself as fear in some places, and the phase tends to show exactly which. It is uncomfortable and it is usable.
• What has already ended asks to be let go. Not what hurts: what has ended and is still being held out of habit, out of an old investment, or out of not knowing who you are without it.
• What was under the rug comes up. Family business, shared money, inheritance, an old secret. Pluto turned inward does not create the problem: it gives back what was already there.

And the limit deserves saying out loud, more here than on any other page of this series: astrology does not predict death, does not predict tragedy, does not diagnose anyone and does not decide for anyone. These are tendencies, and a tendency is something you work with.

What the phase asks for, and what is not worth postponing

There is no prohibition, and the arithmetic shows why: if you are 40, you have already lived through about seventeen years of Pluto retrograde. Everything you have built was built inside them, half the time.

What pays off: therapy, an honest inventory of debt and of partnership, the conversation put off for years, closing on paper what has already ended. The phase favours those who would rather look than manage.

What yields less: forcing it. The confrontation set up to be won tends to cost more than it returns in these months, because the material of the phase is internal and the chosen opponent is almost never the real one.

What is not worth postponing: a legal deadline, an estate with a date on it, a course of treatment, a booked exam. And the usual argument, which in Pluto is decisive: with 43% of the year retrograde and shadow all year long, waiting for clear sky is waiting for a day that does not come.
