The sign of the Part of Fortune says in what manner; the house says WHERE. And in this series the house has an advantage no other house on this site has.
It is the only house in the chart that barely moves when the birth time is wrong. Measured in São Paulo, every six hours across fifty years: one hour of error changes the house of the North Node in 50.1% of charts, and the house of the Part of Fortune in 5.5%. Four minutes of error change it in 0.3%. In every other house series the honest sentence is “without the exact time, the house is worthless”; here it is not.
And the measurement says why. In one hour the Ascendant moves 15.01 degrees, and the Part of Fortune moves 15.01 degrees. It travels with the Ascendant because it comes from it: the formula is the Ascendant plus the distance between the Moon and the Sun. Only the Moon opens a gap between the two, 0.51 degree per hour. From that comes an identity, not a coincidence: the distance from the Ascendant to the Part of Fortune IS the phase of the Moon. We checked it in 73,050 charts, with a worst-case difference of 0.0000000000002 degree.
And the house shares out evenly, each of the twelve receives the Part of Fortune around 8.3% of the time, with a maximum deviation from flat of 0.180 percentage point.
There is one large trap. The classical formula changes between day and night, and the two versions never fall in the same house, zero in 73,050 measurements. They mirror each other around the line of the Ascendant, so one is always on one side and the other on the other. Whoever uses the wrong formula does not get it wrong sometimes: they get it wrong always.
And a limit stated on the first screen, because the old name misleads: the Part of Fortune is not luck and does not promise money. What the modern reading describes is the place in the chart where a person recovers without spending strength.
The Part of Fortune in the 3rd house puts rest in the short conversation, the familiar route and the subject that does not have to lead anywhere. It is the house of the everyday, the neighbourhood, the sibling, the message, the morning’s reading. With the Part of Fortune here, a person recovers in the small, not in the large.
It is not the house of someone who talks a lot. It is the house of someone who tires of heavy subjects and comes back to normal through a conversation that decides nothing.
And here is what hardly any text writes down: this is the most underrated of the twelve, and for a silly reason: its rest looks too small to be taken seriously. A turn around the block, a message to your sister, fifteen pages of some book. Written down it looks like nothing; measured across the person’s week, it is what keeps her standing.
It does not show up as a knack for writing. It shows up in the difference between a day with short exchanges and a whole day working without speaking. These are concrete signs, the kind you recognise in your own week:
- You think better walking or driving than sitting.
- A ten-minute conversation with someone familiar reorganises your day.
- Learning one small useless thing gives you a pleasure that big projects do not.
- You read three things at once and do not consider that a problem.
- A week without leaving the same room makes you unwell before you even miss going out.
Notice what that list does not say. It does not say the person is scattered or superficial, two labels this position carries that describe the excess, not the position. It says that she remakes herself in short pieces, and so endures routines that would exhaust anyone built for long stretches.
You recover fast. Where other positions need a holiday, this one needs twenty minutes, and uses them well. Whoever rests in short pieces can stay whole inside a hard week, because she does not depend on a block of time the week is not going to give her.
In practice that becomes three useful things: getting out of a bad day before it becomes a bad week, learning something new without ceremony and keeping ties with people who live nearby.
That strength does best in work with variety and short exchanges: teaching, retail, writing, anything where the subject changes before it tires. And it pays off badly in a long, solitary project, because there the rest of this house does not fit inside the working day.
There are two, and they are opposites: the excess is escaping the serious subject by the shortest route, and the deficiency is someone who despises the small and is left with nowhere to recover. The excess is distraction used as a painkiller: switching tabs, sending a message, starting something else every time the conversation gets hard. The movement that rests becomes the movement that avoids, and the two look so alike that the person herself cannot tell them apart.
The deficiency is the opposite: is the person who only respects large rest. She postpones rest to the holidays, to the end of the project, to when there is time. This is the only house in the chart you can check in your head. The distance between the Ascendant and the Part of Fortune IS the phase of the Moon, an identity, not an approximation, and from that comes a short rule.
And from it comes a result worth memorising: at the four main phases the Part of Fortune always falls on one of the four angles of the chart. The signs series already publishes the DEGREES of that turn; what is missing there is the house number, and the mirror of the nocturnal chart:
At the New Moon the Part of Fortune sits on the Ascendant (cusp of the 1st house), by day and by night; at the First Quarter, on the Imum Coeli (cusp of the 4th house) in a day chart and on the Midheaven (cusp of the 10th house) in a night chart; at the Full Moon, on the Descendant (cusp of the 7th house), by day and by night; and at the Last Quarter, on the Midheaven (cusp of the 10th house) in a day chart and on the Imum Coeli (cusp of the 4th house) in a night chart.
At the New and the Full Moon it does not matter whether the chart is diurnal or nocturnal: adding and subtracting zero is the same calculation, and the same holds for 180 degrees. At the quarters it does matter, and the swap is from one angle to the other. Whoever has the Part of Fortune in the 3rd house was usually born near a quarter, the First Quarter in a diurnal chart, the Last in a nocturnal one. In a diurnal chart at the First Quarter that calculation lands right on the turn from the 3rd house to the 4th, half the quarter charts fall on each side.
It is the phase of useful tension, the one that pushes without bursting, and it suits a house that recovers in movement rather than at rest.
What changes with time is not the taste for the small: it is the person no longer apologising for it. At twenty, needing a silly conversation looked like a lack of depth. Later it becomes the maintenance that makes depth possible on the other days.
And there is a freedom only this house gives: even with an approximate time, it is usually right, which cannot be said in the other series.
And here is the most honest check a house reading allows: think of the last day you ended better than you began. If somewhere in it there was a short conversation with someone you have known for years, this house is in the right place.
The maturity of this position is taking the small seriously without making it large.
