What the Descendant is

The Descendant is the degree of the zodiac that was setting on the western horizon at the moment and in the place where you were born. It is not a planet: it is an angle, like the Ascendant and like the Midheaven. There is nothing there to point a telescope at.

Tradition reads it as the door of the other person. If the Ascendant describes how you arrive, the Descendant describes what arrives at you — what you look for, what you recognise from afar and what you tend to find in whoever stays close for a long time. It holds for the partner, for the business partner and also for the declared opponent, whom old astrology put in the same house.

It is the piece of the chart that most people have and fewest people know, because almost every site stops here: it talks about the Ascendant, about the Sun, about the Moon, and leaves the other end of the line without a text.

Descendant in Aries is Ascendant in Libra, always

This is not interpretation: it is the same line seen from both ends. The Descendant sits exactly 180 degrees after the Ascendant — no exception, no margin and no dependence on the house system your chart used. Whoever has the Descendant in Aries has the Ascendant in Libra, and the other way round too.

That has a practical consequence almost nobody draws: your arrival and your search are the same information. What you do not exercise in the way you arrive is exactly what you will go looking for in whoever comes close — and that is why the most common complaint about a partner tends to be the most exact description of what was missing at home. The column says how much of the day Aries spends setting in that city — which is the chance of someone being born with this Descendant IF births were spread evenly across the twenty-four hours. They are not: scheduled caesareans, induction and hospital hours concentrate births in certain stretches of the clock. Anyone publishing these numbers as "% of people" is adding up a sum they never did.

What having the Descendant in Aries means

Having the Descendant in Aries means the part of the sky that was setting when you were born was Aries — and, on the other side, Libra was rising. The old reading is blunt: what sits on the Descendant is what you do not exercise alone and will meet in whoever comes close. With Aries there, what arrives from outside is speed, decision and the start.

What you look for in the other person

You look for people who settle things. It is not force or rudeness — it is the ability to decide without consulting three people first, which is exactly what an arrival in Libra tends to postpone. In relationships, in partnerships and in long friendships, the ones who stay are usually the ones who say "let us go" before the doubt has finished forming.

Where the Descendant in Aries tends to jam

When two people compare charts, the Descendant tends to be the most talked about point and the least understood. The old observation is simple: someone whose Sun, Moon or Ascendant falls on your Descendant tends to be recognised quickly — the feeling of "I already know you" before there is any history. With the Descendant in Aries, that means people with weight in Aries in their chart.

The four angles of the chart

The chart has four angles, and they are two opposite pairs. The Ascendant and the Descendant form the horizon line: how you arrive and what arrives at you. The Midheaven and the Imum Coeli form the meridian line: what people see you doing and where you came from.

All four depend on the exact time, and three of the four also depend on the city — the Midheaven is the only one that does not use latitude. Whoever knows all four knows where the chart touches the world.

What the Descendant in Aries does not say about you

It does not say who you will end up with, nor when, nor whether. No sign marries anyone, and there is no forbidden combination: people with the Descendant in Aries build long relationships with all twelve possibilities on the other side.

It is also not your personality. The Descendant is ONE angle out of four, in a chart that has ten planets, twelve houses and the aspects between them. Reading only this piece is reading one line of a full-page text.
