When is my Saturn return? Learn how to calculate yours

Your Saturn return arrives between ages 28 and 30. Here's how to find your month using Saturn's degree in your birth chart, and why it can pass three times.

By Shelly Gonella in Questions for people just starting out8 min read

The first Saturn return arrives between ages 28 and 30. On average, the first touch happens at 29 years and 3 months. The second comes around 58 years and 7 months, and the third around 88.

This range holds for almost everyone, and it is just the start of the count. Within it, your return has a set month, sometimes three set months, and you can get quite close to them with pen and paper. You need just one thing: knowing where Saturn was on the day you were born.

This piece walks you through the count step by step. There are three steps, and the third one explains why so many people feel the return "come back" after thinking it had already passed.

Saturn takes about 29 and a half years to complete a full circle of the zodiac. The return is the day it finishes that circle and passes again over the exact degree it was at when you were born. Since the circle takes almost the same time for everyone, the age of the return is also almost the same.

Almost the same, with a small variation. Saturn's orbit is an ellipse, so it moves faster through one part of the zodiac and slower through another. Measured one by one, the cycles range from 29 years and 1 month to 29 years and 10 months. Add to that the back-and-forth of retrogradation, which we explain in step 3, and the age of the first touch falls between 28 years and 5 months and 30 years and 5 months.

The first step is to find the degree of your Saturn. Generate your free birth chart with your birth date, time and city. In the list of planets, look for Saturn and note down two things: the sign and the degree. Something like "Saturn 18°32′ Aries" will show up — eighteen degrees and thirty-two minutes of Aries.

If you do not know your birth time, you can still generate the chart. Saturn moves less than a degree a week, so the time barely changes its degree. What the time changes is the house the house it falls in, which is the area of life where the return shows up, and for that it does matter. The piece about not knowing your birth time explains the rest.

Also note whether the retrograde symbol, an R with its leg crossed out, appears next to Saturn. It means Saturn was retrograde when you were born.

The second step is to find the period when Saturn comes back to your sign. Saturn stays about two and a half years in each sign. The list below gives the dates it moves through each one between 2007 and 2036, which covers the first return for anyone born between 1978 and 2007, and the second return for anyone born between 1948 and 1978.

Saturn passes through Virgo from 2 September 2007 to 29 October 2009, and again from 7 April to 21 July 2010; through Libra, from 29 October 2009 to 7 April 2010, and from 21 July 2010 to 5 October 2012; through Scorpio, from 5 October 2012 to 23 December 2014, and again from 15 June to 18 September 2015; through Sagittarius, from 23 December 2014 to 15 June 2015, and from 18 September 2015 to 20 December 2017; through Capricorn, from 20 December 2017 to 22 March 2020, and again from 1 July to 17 December 2020; through Aquarius, from 22 March to 1 July 2020, and from 17 December 2020 to 7 March 2023; through Pisces, from 7 March 2023 to 25 May 2025, and again from 1 September 2025 to 14 February 2026; through Aries, from 25 May to 1 September 2025, and from 14 February 2026 to 13 April 2028; through Taurus, from 13 April 2028 to 1 June 2030; through Gemini, from 1 June 2030 to 14 July 2032; through Cancer, from 14 July 2032 to 27 August 2034, and again from 15 February to 11 May 2035; and through Leo, from 27 August 2034 to 15 February 2035, and from 11 May 2035 to 16 October 2036.

Notice that several signs have two stretches. That is Saturn entering, slipping back into the previous sign for a few months, and entering again. Keep that in mind, because it is the same thing that gives the return three passes.

Now use the degree you noted down. Each sign has 30 degrees, and Saturn moves through them roughly in order across the period:

An example, from start to finish: someone was born on June 15, 1997. Their chart shows Saturn at 18°32′ Aries.

According to the list in the second step, Saturn settled into Aries for good on February 14, 2026 and leaves on April 13, 2028: that's 26 months for 30 degrees, close to a degree a month. Eighteen and a half degrees after the entry lands in mid-2027. The estimate is close: with the ephemeris, the exact pass falls on April 14, 2027, when she will be 29 years and 10 months old.

The two-month gap between the rough count and the exact date is normal. Saturn does not move at a constant speed: it speeds up, slows down, stops, and moves backward. The thirds rule gets you the season; the exact day only comes from the ephemeris.

The third step is to see whether your return has one pass or three. Every year, for about four and a half months, Saturn appears to move backward across the sky. That is Saturn retrograde. Nothing up there changes direction: it is Earth passing it in its orbit, and from here we see the motion reversed.

If your Saturn's degree falls within one of these back-and-forth stretches, it passes over that degree three times: once going, once coming back, and once going again. Measured across one birth per day between 1940 and 2025, this happens to 38% of people. The other 62% have just one pass.

An example with three passes. Someone was born on November 5, 1996, with Saturn at 1°17′ Aries. Look at the list in the second step: Saturn entered Aries in May 2025, slipped back into Pisces in September, and entered Aries again in February 2026. Her degree sat right in the middle of that back-and-forth, and the three passes fell on:

The first on June 15, 2025, at 28 years and 7 months; the second on August 10, 2025, at 28 years and 9 months; and the third on February 25, 2026, at 29 years and 3 months.

That's 255 days between the first and the last. This is why so many people say "I thought I'd sorted this out last year": the same issue shows up, disappears for a few months, and comes back.

The way to work it out roughly is what we did here: if your degree sits close to Saturn's entry into the sign, or close to where it stations and turns back, expect three passes. Certainty depends on the dates when it stops and changes direction, and only the ephemeris gives you those.

The exact pass date is the centre, and the period is longer than it. Many people feel the topic arrive as Saturn enters the sign and gets close to the degree, and feel it settle after Saturn moves a few degrees past it. A return is approach, pass, and departure, and this usually takes more than a year.

So if your count landed on March 2027, all of 2026 is already part of the conversation.

The same count works for the second return, which arrives on average at 58 years and 7 months. Someone born on May 10, 1968 has Saturn at 19°43′ Aries: the first return had three passes, between July 1997 and March 1998, and the second falls in a single pass, on April 24, 2027, at age 58 years and 11 months.

Note that the same chart can have three passes in one return and one in the other. Each Saturn cycle has its own calendar of comings and goings.

With the three steps you know the season of your return and whether it tends to have one pass or three. Three things are left out, and they are exactly the ones that matter most to anyone close to 29:

Two people who turn 29 in the same month can be living through things that look nothing alike, and both are in the same transit. The text about what the Saturn return is shows the twelve areas where it can land.

And the questions that come up most on this subject, with the short answer:

At what age is the Saturn return? The first one arrives between ages 28 and 30, with the first touch on average at 29 years and 3 months. The second comes around age 58 years and 7 months, and the third around age 88. The age changes little from person to person; the exact month depends on Saturn's degree in your chart.

How do I find the date of my Saturn return? Find the sign and degree of Saturn in your chart, see which period Saturn returns to that sign, and use the degree to land on the right stretch of the period: 0 to 10 degrees is the start, 10 to 20 the middle, 20 to 30 the end. A rough count gets you the season; the exact day only comes from the ephemeris.

Why can the Saturn return happen three times? Because Saturn goes retrograde for about four and a half months a year. If your Saturn's degree falls within that back-and-forth stretch, it passes over that spot going, coming back, and going again. This happens to 38% of people, and the three passes usually spread across eight or nine months.

Do I need my birth time to calculate the Saturn return? For the sign and degree, almost never: Saturn moves less than a degree a week, so the time changes its position very little. The time matters for knowing the house it falls in, which is the area of life where the return shows up.

When is the second Saturn return? On average at age 58 years and 7 months, and the count works the same way as the first: the same degree, the next time round. The same chart can have three passes in one return and just one in the other, because each Saturn cycle has its own calendar of comings and goings.

In short:

Step 1 find the sign and degree of Saturn in your chart Step 2 check the list for when Saturn returns to that sign Step 3 check whether the degree falls in a back-and-forth: one pass or three Age between 28 and 30 years old; the second around 58 and 59

How we interpret your chart

Methodology

☉

The interpretation follows the Shelly Gonella method — a well-known astrologer who never reads a position in isolation.

01

Every reading combines planet, sign, house, aspects, ruler of the house and position of the ruler, identifying patterns that repeat in your chart.

02

The result is an integrated interpretation, made to turn astrological information into clarity, real understanding and practical use.

Have you ever gone to an astrology site, generated your birth chart and started reading each position separately?

"Moon in Pisces."

"Venus in Gemini."

"Uranus in House 7."

You get dozens of interpretations but, in the end, you still do not understand how any of it applies to your life.

Worse still: many people end up concluding that "astrology does not work" when, in fact, the problem is how the chart was interpreted. A birth chart is not a collection of loose meanings.

In professional astrology there is a methodology of reading. There is an order, criteria and specific guidelines that show which elements carry more weight, how they relate to each other and which patterns really repeat. That is what turns information into understanding. It was for that reason that I developed my method of interpretation.

Instead of simply explaining what each planet, sign or house means, I answer the question that really matters:

"What do I do with this?"

How does that position influence my relationships? My career? My challenges? My talents? My decisions?

Because astrology only makes sense when it stops being a list of traits and becomes a practical tool for understanding who you are, why certain patterns repeat and how to use that knowledge to live with more awareness.

Most charts explain what you have.

My method explains how everything works together, which patterns in your chart matter most and, above all, what to do with that information in practice.

That is the difference between reading a birth chart and truly understanding it.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about your reading

How does it work?

You enter your birth data and receive the graphic of your birth chart free, with the positions of the planets, signs, houses and aspects. Then you choose the area you want to understand first: the written interpretation is ready within 1 day and opens in your library, here inside the site.

Is the interpretation created from my chart?

Yes. The content is organised from the real positions of the planets, signs, houses, aspects and rulers of your birth chart — never from a standard text that would serve anyone with the same isolated position.

Do I need to know the exact time of birth?

For the free chart, no: without the time it is still possible to calculate the positions of the planets, but the Ascendant and the houses become unavailable or less precise. For the interpretation you buy, yes — the time is indispensable, because the Ascendant, the houses and much of what the reading analyses come from it. If you are not sure of the time, check your birth certificate before ordering: without it the result would be led into error.

How long until I receive my analysis?

Within 1 day of the payment clearing — and usually well before. It opens on its own in your library, and you can close the page while you wait.

Do I get a PDF? Does access expire?

Yes, the interpretation is available to download as a PDF, and the PDF is yours to keep. On the platform, access lasts 12 months from the purchase.

Can I buy more than one analysis?

Yes. After the first sign-up, you can order as many as you like with the same login — they are all kept in your library.

Is my data safe?

Yes. Your birth data is used only to calculate the birth chart and is never shared with third parties. The payment details go straight to whoever charges — this page does not store card numbers.
