The sign of the North Node says in what manner; the house says WHERE. They are two different questions, and in this series the second one has an advantage the first does not.

Because the sign of the Node is almost cohort information. It takes 567 days in each sign, a year and a half, so everyone born within eighteen months has the same one. In a whole classroom the sign of the Node repeats; it is true information, and it is wide. The house is yours: it comes from your time and your city.

And the house shares out evenly. Sweeping a hundred years of births every six hours, the North Node falls in each of the twelve houses about 8.3% of the time, with a maximum deviation from flat of 0.092 of a percentage point in Berlin. Each house is roughly one person in twelve, and that deviation, the largest of the house series on this site, is still under a tenth of a percentage point.

And there is something only this series has. The house opposite the North Node is not just any house: it is the house of the South Node. In the other series the opposite house is a useful counterpoint; here it is the other point of the same pair, calculated at the same moment and always 180 degrees away. Reading the North Node house without the opposite one is reading half the subject, and that is why every page in this series spends a whole block on it.

And the hard difference of this series has to be said before anything else: the house depends on the exact time of birth. Measured over the same hundred years, in São Paulo: four minutes of clock error already change the house of the Node in 3.3% of charts, fifteen minutes in 12.5%, half an hour in 25.1% and one hour in 50.1%, half of them. And that number is not about the Node: it is about the houses. It comes out almost the same for any point in the chart, because what turns is the whole wheel.

The North Node in the 4th house points the direction inwards: towards the home, the root, the private and the base nobody else sees. It is the house of the ground under you. With the North Node here, growth asks you to build a private life, a place where nobody is assessing you, a chosen family, a corner that is yours, and that usually looks like a waste of time to someone who measures life by what she has produced.

It is not the house of someone who has to drop her career. It is the house of someone who works very well in public, and for whom the new thing is existing when there is no audience.

And here is what hardly any text writes down: what this house asks for is not rest, it is belonging, and no job delivers that. You can rest in a hotel; you cannot belong to one. People with this position tend to confuse the two for many years.

It does not show up as homesickness. It shows up in what is left of you when the work stops. These are concrete signs, the kind you recognise in your own week:

• You know who you are at work and hesitate when the question is outside it.
• Your home is beautiful and you are hardly ever in it.
• Holidays make you uncomfortable before they make you well.
• You look after your family by telephone and by bank transfer.
• The idea of doing nothing for a whole Saturday strikes you as dangerous.

Notice what that list does not say. It does not say the person is a workaholic or unambitious, two labels this position carries, and they describe the excess, not the position. It says she learned to be somebody out there before being somebody at home, and she is making the way back.

You know how to build. The same competence that raised a career raises a home, once it is pointed inwards. Someone who knows how to make a thing last on the outside does not have to learn it from scratch on the inside: she has to decide that this also deserves the effort.

In practice that becomes three useful things: saying no to a commitment in order to stay home, looking after someone without delegating it and building a routine with no audience.

That strength does best in work that fits inside a life, and not the other way round: your own hours, your own place, a written limit. And it does badly in a post that demands permanent presence and constant travel, because there the 10th house takes over again.

There are two, and they are opposites: the excess is the person who shuts herself in and calls it a root, and the deficiency is someone who lives at work and visits her own house. The Shelly Method reads every archetype through four faces, the light, the shadow, the excess and the deficiency, and in the Node they have one thing in common: the house says WHERE, and the rest of the chart says with what force.

The excess is withdrawal as refusal: cancelling everything, not going out, treating the world as noise. It looks like the right direction and it is the old one with the sign flipped, someone who shuts herself in is still measuring life by what it is not. The cost is the base becoming a hiding place.

The deficiency is the opposite: is the postponement through work. One more project, one more season, one more post, and the home is left for later. The person avoids the slowness of what does not pay and calls it a phase, and the phase lasts twenty years.

Both faces have the same raw material, and that is why the repair is the same: stay home for a whole day without turning it into a task. Without tidying a cupboard: tidying a cupboard is still producing, and the habit comes back through it, and that is what the sign of the North Node and the rest of the chart show.

Here the opposite house is the other point of the same pair. The South Node is always 180 degrees from the North, so with the North Node in the 4th house, your South Node is in the 10th house, and always will be. In the other series the opposite house is one more reading; in this one it is half the subject.

The 10th house is where you already know how to move: the post, the name, the visible result. It is familiar ground, and that is why it pulls. Growth is not in abandoning it, it is in not going back to it every time the private gets uncomfortable.

In practice, people with this pair of houses often have a career that is also an escape, and it works better once that is known.

What changes with time is not the ambition: it is the person finding out that nobody applauds what holds her life up. At twenty, home was where you sleep between two commitments. Later it becomes the place you set out from, and that difference changes the whole week.

And here there is a clock almost nobody names: the nodal return, every 18.6 years. The pair closes its circle in 18.6 years, so this happens at around 18, 37 and 55, and halfway there, at 9, at 27 and at 46, the two nodes are reversed relative to your chart. The subject of THIS HOUSE tends to come back to the table at each of those passages, at whatever age you are.

And the most honest check a house reading allows is worth doing: what was at stake in your life at 18, at 27 and at 37? If the subject of this house shows up in all three, the reading has ground under it.

No honest text gives an exact age: the arc depends on the whole chart.

It says where the direction of growth touches your life, not who you are. And here the difference is sharper than in any other series: the sign of the Node belongs to a cohort of a year and a half, and the house separates two people born on the same day in different cities.

Which sign that North Node is in changes the manner: in Pisces the root is felt and without an outline, and in Taurus it is concrete and slow to move.
