Lilith is not a celestial body: it is a point on the Moon's orbit. The Moon does not circle the Earth in a perfect circle but in an ellipse, so there is a point where it comes closest and a point where it goes farthest. The farthest point is the apogee, and that is what astrology calls Lilith, or the Black Moon.
There is nothing there to point a telescope at. It is a geometric position, like the Midheaven or the nodes, which does not make it any less calculable: it has an exact address in the zodiac at any instant, and this site works it out.
There are two Liliths: it is the fact almost no text about Lilith mentions, and it changes what you read. The Moon's apogee can be worked out in two ways, and both have names:
Mean Lilith always moves 0.1114° per day, never went backwards across 73,001 days and spends 269.3 days in each sign, always; true Lilith moves from −3.59° to +6.31° per day, goes backwards on 56% of days and goes back and forth between the signs.
Measured day by day from 1930 to 2030, the two sit 10.89° apart on average, and reached 30.25° apart on 6 January 2017, more than a whole sign. The upshot is that they land in different signs on 36.4% of days: more than one chart in three.
This site calculates mean Lilith, which is what most software uses. If another site shows a different sign from yours, most of the time nobody is wrong: it is the other Lilith.
Lilith goes round the zodiac in 8.85 years and spends 269.3 days in each sign, about nine months. Counting the 270 complete passages between 1900 and 2100, that number is the same in all twelve signs down to the first decimal place.
That is less common than it sounds. Chiron spends 8.00 years in Aries and 1.70 in Virgo, nearly five times as long in one as in the other. Mercury races and stalls. Mean Lilith does neither: it moves at one steady pace and never doubles back. It is the most regular point in the chart, and it is curious that astrology ties it to precisely what does not behave.
Nine months in a sign means that people born near you have the same Lilith. It is not a personal piece like the Ascendant, which changes every two hours, in scale it is closer to Jupiter: a mark of a cohort, not of an individual.
With Lilith in Taurus, what does not bend in you is your right to your own body and your own pace. You do not give up what gives you physical pleasure, or the time you need to do things, and you do not give it up even when giving it up would be convenient. Food, sleep, money, touch, the way you occupy your home: on those subjects you are immovable, and always have been.
The price shows up as an accusation of stubbornness, and sometimes of being too materialistic. People with this Lilith often hear from early on that they want too much comfort, that they are slow, that they should settle. The gain is uncommon: you have a bodily limit you do not negotiate, and it protects you from arrangements other people put up with for years. The body says no before your head finds an argument.
This Lilith is recognisable by what you refuse without being able to justify it properly. These are concrete signs, the kind you recognise in your own week:
- You have lost opportunities by not giving up a condition others thought was small.
- Other people being in a hurry does not speed you up, if anything, it jams you.
- Money is a subject on which you take no advice, not even from people who know more.
- You recognise a bad environment through your body before you recognise it through the conversation.
- Someone has said you are too comfortable with yourself, and it was not a compliment.
Notice what that list does not say. It does not say you are stubborn or lazy, it says that your body has a vote, and you have never managed to take it off the table.

Because Lilith takes nine months in each sign and comes back every 8.85 years, you can find your own passage in a short list. These are the dates for mean Lilith, the one this site calculates, between 1940 and 2035:
Lilith passes through Taurus from March 7, 1941 to December 2, 1941; from January 11, 1950 to October 7, 1950; from November 16, 1958 to August 13, 1959; from September 22, 1967 to June 17, 1968; from July 27, 1976 to April 23, 1977; from June 2, 1985 to February 26, 1986; from April 7, 1994 to January 2, 1995; from February 11, 2003 to November 7, 2003; from December 17, 2011 to September 12, 2012; from October 22, 2020 to July 18, 2021; and from August 27, 2029 to May 24, 2030.
The dates are in universal time, and the move from one sign to the next happens at an exact instant of the day. Anyone born on the day of the change needs the calculation with the birth time: the list is for locating the stretch, not for deciding the edge.
Lilith is not your sex life, and it is not a list of flaws. Having Lilith in Taurus does not make anyone greedy. It describes where you do not give way, and it is common for the same person to be generous with everything except their own time.
And it is the piece of the chart with the least agreement. Two serious programs disagree about its sign in more than one chart out of three, which is a good reason to read Lilith with a light hand. A chart with Lilith in Taurus and Mercury in Gemini is someone who changes their mind quickly about almost everything and never about what they eat, where they sleep and what they charge.
A limit said out loud, because it is part of reading seriously: none of this is prediction. Astrology describes tendency and gives vocabulary for what a person already lives, it does not determine what will happen, and nobody should be selling that.
And the questions that come up most on this subject, with the short answer:
Is Lilith in Taurus about money? It is, but not in the way it is usually put. It is no sign of wealth or of financial trouble: it is the subject on which you refuse to be told what to do. Money, in this position, is autonomy before it is a number.
Why do I resist changing my routine so much? Because routine, here, is not comfort: it is how you make sure your own pace is respected. Changes imposed from outside hurt more than changes you choose yourself, and the difference between the two is large in this chart.
Why does another site show my Lilith in a different sign? Because there are two Liliths. The mean and the true are two ways of calculating the same point on the Moon's orbit, and they land in different signs on 36.4% of days, reaching 30° apart. This site calculates the mean, which is what most software uses. Neither is wrong; they are different calculations.
Is Lilith the same as the Black Moon? It is the same point under two names. Black Moon is the older name for the lunar apogee, the point on the Moon's orbit farthest from Earth. There is also an asteroid named Lilith, which is a different thing and almost never what charts show.
Do I need my birth time to know my Lilith? For the sign, hardly ever: it moves a little over a tenth of a degree per day, so the sign is only in doubt for someone born on the exact day of the change. For the house, yes, the house depends on the time, as it does for any point in the chart.
Is there such a thing as retrograde Lilith? The mean never goes retrograde: across 73,001 days measured, it always moved forward. The true one is retrograde on 56% of days, more than half. If your chart marks Lilith retrograde, it is using the true one.
In short, this placement reads like this:
