An aspect is the distance between two pieces of the chart, measured in degrees, and that is what says whether they work together, ignore each other or fight. The previous series describe each piece on its own: the planet in the sign, the planet in the house. This one describes what happens between two of them.

There are five distances that tradition calls the major aspects: the conjunction (0°), the sextile (60°), the square (90°), the trine (120°) and the opposition (180°). Each has its own way of putting two pieces in contact, and none of them is good or bad, what exists is what each one charges and what each one delivers.

And there is the number almost no text gives: the orb. Two pieces at exactly 90° form a square; at 97°, they form nothing. This blog uses 6 degrees for the major aspects, and outside that they are two pieces in the same chart, which is another thing. That is why an aspect is not found out from the date: it needs the calculated chart.

And there is a reading order that changes everything, and that almost no site respects: the aspect comes last. It describes the relationship between two pieces, and there is no reading the relationship without knowing both. Whoever arrives here without having read each piece in the sign and in the house is reading the conversation without knowing who is speaking.

The aspect between Saturn and Uranus marks the fight between structure and what wants to break it. Saturn is what holds, orders and charges. Uranus is what breaks and gives no warning. In contact, the two produce the most recognisable conflict in collective life: the old that resists and the new that pushes, at the same time and in the same place.

It is the pair that describes reform, and reform is always a negotiation between the two. The cycle lasts about forty-five years, which makes it the clock of the institutional changes of a whole lifetime.

And here is what hardly any text writes down: an aspect is a RELATIONSHIP, and not one more piece. It does not add a trait to your chart, it says how two traits already there get along with each other. And it explains why certain decades seem stuck and others seem to collapse: it is not collective mood, it is the phase in which structure and rupture meet in the sky.

It is worth giving the number before any reading, because without it there is no aspect: this blog uses a 6-degree orb for the major aspects. Outside that they are two pieces in the same chart, which is another thing. And the orb requires the calculated chart, and both are slow: the aspect belongs to the whole generation, and the calculated chart says which houses it fell in, which is what changes from person to person.

The conjunction joins order and rupture in the same place: it is the phase in which a structure gets remade. They tend to be periods of deep reform, of law, of institutions, of the social contract. Whoever is born in them carries both things inside: they respect the rule and want to change it.

The cost is paralysis through internal conflict, collective and individual: wanting permanence and wanting rupture at once freezes you more than either one alone.

The sextile and the trine give reform with no rupture: the structure changes and stays standing. They are phases in which the new gets absorbed by the old with no crisis, a change in law that passes, technology that enters the routine with no fright. Whoever is born in them tends to be good at modernising what already exists.

The cost is the little real rupture: a generation that always managed to reform from within is slow to recognise what cannot be fixed.

The square and the opposition set structure against rupture, and out of that fight comes the change nobody wanted and that stayed. They are phases of institutional crisis: what existed no longer serves and what is coming does not work yet. Whoever is born in them tends to have a distrustful relationship with institutions, and a real need for autonomy.

The collective fix is the same as the person's: it is not choosing a side, it is using the structure to hold the rupture, because rupture with no ground under it becomes only noise.

It shows up in the relationship a whole generation has with rules and with authority. They are concrete signs, the kind one recognizes in one's own week, and they hold for any of this pair's aspects, because the subject is the same and what changes is the friction:

Notice what this list does not say. It does not say the person belongs to a conservative generation or to a rebellious one, two labels this pair carries that describe the extreme, not the aspect. It says your generation came in at a certain phase of reform, and what is yours is where that fell in the chart.

This is the inversion most texts do not make, and it holds for every pair: what runs with no friction was never tested, and what bothers is what produces. The trine between Saturn and Uranus delivers the result with no effort, and for that reason the person usually does not build the muscle, and finds that out on the day the ease is not enough. And the square delivers the opposite: a generation that watched the structure fail and that for that reason knows what an institution is made of.

In this pair the inversion is the one that shows up most in political history, and the easiest to check in a book, which is uncommon in an astrological argument. The Shelly Method reads every archetype through four faces, the light, the shadow, the excess and the deficiency, and in an aspect they get distributed between the two pieces: almost always one of them is in excess and the other in deficiency, and the fix goes through the weak side.

It matures in forty-five-year cycles, and not in years of a life. Whoever has this pair strong in the chart tends to live their own reforms in the years when the cycle remakes itself in the sky, and not at a set age.

Maturity here belongs to the person: it is no longer choosing between security and freedom, and starting to use one to fund the other.

Saturn and Uranus are the two slow bodies of this pair, and neither of them is personal. Saturn spends two and a half years in each sign and Uranus seven, and the cycle between the two is about forty-five years, which makes the aspect the same for everybody born within a span of years.

Said plainly: this aspect does not describe you, it describes your generation. It says whether it came into the world in a phase of calm reform, of firm structure or of institutional crisis.

What is yours, and only yours, is where that falls in your chart: which houses the two are in, and what aspects they make with your Sun, your Moon, your Mercury, your Venus and your Mars. That is how an aspect of a generation becomes biography, and it is the only part of this page that depends on your birth time and your city.
