The Vertex is a crossing, not a body. It is the point where the circle running exactly east and west of you, the prime vertical, meets the band of the zodiac, on the setting side. There is nothing there to point a telescope at, and the calculation depends on three things: the time, the longitude and, above all, the latitude of the place where you were born.
Astrology usually treats it as a second Descendant, the side of encounters that arrive from outside, the ones you did not arrange. That is a fair reading. What almost no text mentions is what comes next, and it changes who can use this piece at all.
The Vertex in Aries is possible at any latitude, in both hemispheres: it is one of the four signs the two short arcs are born in.
This is not convention or school of thought: it comes out of the calculation. Inside the tropics the Vertex does not go round the zodiac, it stays trapped in two short, opposite arcs, one sitting on the Pisces/Aries boundary and the other on the Virgo/Libra boundary. In Belém each arc is about seven degrees wide. That is why four signs are possible at any latitude on the planet, Virgo, Libra, Pisces and Aries, and the other eight need distance from the equator.
In Belém, at 1.46° S, 4 of the twelve signs are possible: Virgo, Libra, Pisces and Aries. In Manaus, at 3.10° S, 4; in Recife, at 8.05° S, 4; in Salvador, at 12.97° S, 8, those four plus Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius; in Brasília, at 15.79° S, 8; in Belo Horizonte, at 19.92° S, 8; in Rio de Janeiro, at 22.91° S, 12, all twelve; in São Paulo, at 23.55° S, 12; and in Porto Alegre, at 30.03° S, 12.
The step that changes this table most falls between Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro. That is three degrees of latitude, and on one side eight signs are possible, on the other all twelve. Someone born in Belém cannot have the Vertex in Cancer, and no site that shows it is using this calculation.
The arcs open in exact steps, because their edges cross the sign boundaries one after another, and there are two steps, of four signs each. At 11.47 degrees of latitude Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius come in; at 20.15, Gemini, Cancer, Sagittarius and Capricorn come in. And from 23.4381 degrees, which is the tilt of the Earth, and therefore the line of the tropic, the two arcs meet: the Vertex stops having a gap and starts reaching any degree of the zodiac, and not just any sign. In the northern hemisphere the numbers are the same, and for a rather elegant reason: each step groups signs that are already opposite one another, Taurus with Scorpio, Leo with Aquarius, Gemini with Sagittarius, Cancer with Capricorn. The 180-degree symmetry between the hemispheres falls on top of itself.
With the Vertex in Aries, what arrives from outside tends to arrive in a hurry. The traditional reading of the Vertex is the encounter you did not arrange, the person, the offer or the event that comes in through the setting door. In Aries, it comes in fast: the conversation that becomes a decision within the week, the invitation that needs an answer today, the person who arrives already saying what they want.
What is worth knowing is the practical effect of that on your biography. People with this Vertex usually have a list of turning points that began with somebody else’s impulse rather than a decision of their own, and usually took a while to notice that most of those turns were good. The reverse holds too: what you planned calmly hardly ever had the same effect.
This Vertex is recognisable by the way the important things came into your life. These are concrete signs, the kind you recognise in your own week:
- The people who changed your course arrived without warning, and fast.
- You respond well to short-notice invitations and badly to open-ended ones.
- You have stories that begin with “so-and-so turned up and said”.
- You have been pulled into something good by someone more decisive than you.
- Encounters that drag on for months before becoming anything usually become nothing.
Notice what that list does not say. It does not say you are passive, it says that what comes from outside, in your chart, tends to come in a hurry, and you learned to decide at that pace.

The Vertex is the piece of the chart that depends most on where you were born. More even than the Ascendant, because latitude does not only move its degree: it changes which signs are possible at all. Getting the city wrong by a few degrees of latitude can take two whole signs off the table, because they come in in pairs.
And the time matters in the usual way: outside the tropics the Vertex goes right round once a day, so it moves fast. Inside the tropics it barely moves, which is good news for anyone who does not know their exact birth time, and bad news for anyone who was expecting a personal piece.
It does not schedule encounters, and it does not promise anybody. The Vertex sets no date and promises no person. It describes the shape of what arrives unbidden, and that is vocabulary, not a calendar.
And near the equator it is barely yours. Within two arcs of seven degrees, the Vertex of someone born in Belém falls in one of four signs, and nearly always in the same handful of degrees, a constant of the city, not a trait of the person. Someone born in São Paulo can have the Vertex in Cancer; someone born in Fortaleza cannot, but both can have it in Aries, which does not depend on latitude at all.
A limit said out loud, because it is part of reading seriously: none of this is prediction. Astrology describes tendency and gives vocabulary for what a person already lives, it does not determine what will happen, and nobody should be selling that.
And the questions that come up most on this subject, with the short answer:
Does the Vertex in Aries mean I will have a sudden encounter? It means the material that arrives from outside, in your chart, has that shape. It is not a prediction of an event: it is a description of a pattern you probably recognise looking back.
I was born in northern Brazil. Can I have the Vertex in Aries? You can, at any latitude in Brazil. Aries is one of the four signs the Vertex’s two short arcs are born in, with Pisces, Virgo and Libra, and so it is one of the few that do not depend on distance from the equator.
Why does another site show my Vertex in a different sign? If you were born inside the tropics, most likely because the other site does not handle latitude the way this calculation does, or because it picked the opposite point. Below 23.44 degrees of latitude the Vertex stays trapped in two short arcs: in Belém, for instance, it can only fall in Virgo, Libra, Pisces or Aries. A result outside those arcs came from a different formula.
Does the Vertex show when I will meet someone? No. It is a geometric crossing between the prime vertical and the zodiac, and the traditional reading links it to encounters that arrive from outside, which is a useful metaphor, not a diary. Dates of meeting are not read off an angle.
Do I need the exact city of birth? You do, more than for any other piece. Latitude does not only move the Vertex’s degree: near the tropics it changes which signs are possible. A few degrees of difference in latitude take two whole signs off the table, because they come in in pairs.
Is there an Antivertex? There is: it is the opposite point, 180 degrees away, on the rising side. And that convention is what decides the result: the Vertex is the one that falls in the setting half of the chart, houses 5 to 8, and the Antivertex is the other. Since the two live in opposite arcs, a site that picks the opposite hands you the sign opposite yours. This site calculates both, and says which is which.
In short, this placement reads like this:
Keywords vertex, antivertex, vertex in the birth chart, latitude and vertex
Inside the tropics the Vertex only falls in two short, opposite arcs, and in Belém each one is seven degrees wide. Four signs are possible at any latitude; the other eight come in on two steps, at 11.47 and at 20.15 degrees. See yours free here.
