The Vertex sits in houses 5 to 8 because it is, by definition, the point on the sunset side of the chart, and houses 5 to 8 are the middle of the sunset half. It is neither a rule of interpretation nor a convention of some school: it is geometry, and it comes from where the point sits in the sky.

The sunset half of the chart is houses 4 to 9It is worth picturing: the wheel starts at the Ascendant, in the east; it goes down through houses 1, 2 and 3 to the Imum Coeli; it climbs through houses 4, 5 and 6 to the Descendant, in the west; it carries on through 7, 8 and 9 to the Midheaven; and it comes back through 10, 11 and 12 to the Ascendant. From the Imum Coeli to the Midheaven, on the sunset side, there are six houses, and the Vertex is among them, always.

Houses 5 to 8 are four of those six. The rule repeated in every book is the tightened version of the truth, and it works very well in the place where it was written.

The Vertex is the point where the prime vertical crosses the ecliptic, on the sunset side. The prime vertical is the imaginary circle that passes through the east point of the horizon, straight overhead and through the west point, it splits the sky into in front of and behind whoever faces north.

Since the ecliptic is the apparent path of the Sun, the two circles cross in two places: one in the east and one in the west. The western one is the Vertex; the eastern one is the Antivertex. The two always stand 180 degrees apart.

In interpretation, the tradition associates the Vertex with meetings the person did not arrange, what arrives by another's hand, what happens without having been sought. That is why it comes up so often in talk about destiny and about defining encounters. What each sign does with that is in the series on the Vertex in the twelve signs.

And it demands the same thing the Ascendant demands: the hour and the city of birth, both. Without those there is no prime vertical, because there is no horizon, and without a horizon there is neither east nor west.

The houses 5 to 8 rule does not always hold. It holds without exception from 27.71 degrees of latitude, and fails below that. I calculated it over Placidus cusps, solving the prime vertical condition and keeping the crossing on the west side, across 180 thousand configurations per latitude.

The cut-off was found by bisection, not rounded: at 27.71 degrees there is still a time of day that puts the Vertex in house 4 or house 9; at 27.72 there is none left. It is not round because it was not chosen, it comes out of the obliquity of the ecliptic, which changes slowly: with 22 degrees of obliquity the limit would be 25.92, and with 24 degrees, 28.42.

In Fortaleza, Brazil, at 3.7° S, the Vertex sits in houses 5 to 8 in 66.6% of charts and in houses 4 or 9 in 33.4%; in Recife, at 8.1° S, 66.3% and 33.7%; in Brasília, at 15.8° S, 65.2% and 34.8%; in São Paulo, at 23.6° S, 63.8% and 36.2%; and in Porto Alegre, at 30.0° S, in Lisbon, at 38.7° N, and in London, at 51.5° N, it sits in houses 5 to 8 in 100% of charts.

Notice the cut-off. From Porto Alegre southwards the rule is exact; north of Rio Grande do Sul it misses in about a third of charts. And it is not a calculation error: in those cases the Vertex really is in house 4 or house 9, which are still on the sunset side, they are just not in the middle of it.

The explanation is the usual one: the rule was written where the people writing it lived. London, Paris, Hamburg and New York all sit above 40 degrees, and there the houses 5 to 8 rule is absolutely true. Whoever was born in Salvador is at 13 degrees, and their sky does not obey a rule calibrated for the temperate northern hemisphere.

There is one more detail that closes the argument: the closer to the equator, the more the Vertex spreads out. In London it hardly ever leaves houses 5 and 8; in Fortaleza, the six houses of the sunset side take almost the same slice each, close to 16.7%. It makes sense: at the equator the prime vertical passes through the celestial poles, and the geometry that concentrated the point stops concentrating it.

The Vertex does not sit in house 1, 10 or 12, and a Vertex marked there is an Antivertex with the name swapped. Houses 1, 2, 3, 10, 11 and 12 are the sunrise half of the chart, and the Vertex is the crossing on the west side. No latitude changes that, it was the only result that held in 100% of cases at every latitude I tested.

The mistake is an easy one to make, and it has a technical cause. The formula in use returns both points at once and does not say which is which, it calculates an Ascendant for the complementary latitude, and the result is the pair, not the name. Whoever writes the program has to decide afterwards which of the two is the Vertex, and the criterion nearly everyone uses is precisely “whichever lands in houses 5 to 8”.

And there the problem closes on itself: using the tightened rule as the tie-breaker makes the program go wrong exactly where the rule does not hold. Below 21 degrees of latitude that criterion swaps the two names in 11% to 16% of charts, depending on the city. The criterion that never fails at any latitude is asking which side of the meridian the point is on: the setting side is where the hour angle has a positive sine. That is the definition stated in one line, and it is how this site decides, deliberately without looking at the house, because the house depends on the house system, and the Vertex does not change when you switch systems.

The Antivertex is the point opposite the Vertex, 180 degrees from it, on the sunrise side of the chart. If the Vertex is in house 7, the Antivertex is in house 1; if the Vertex is in 5, it is in 11.

The reading is the pair, not one alone. Where the Vertex describes what arrives from outside, the Antivertex describes what the person brings to the meeting on her own account, what she already was before the other person turned up. Someone with the Antivertex in house 1 brings herself; with the Antivertex in house 2, she brings what she has and what she is worth.

Plenty of internet writing ignores the Antivertex, and the reason is the same one that makes the Vertex sell so well: a meeting with destiny sells, and one's own work does not. The tradition reads both.

It also serves as a home check: open your chart and see which house each of the two is marked in. If they are not in opposite houses, 1 and 7, 2 and 8, 4 and 10, the calculation is faulty. And if what is labelled Vertex sits in a house from 10 to 3, the two names have been swapped.

The Vertex does not mark the person you will end up with, and it is not the “soulmate point”. That reading circulates a lot and does not come from the tradition, it comes from the internet of the 2000s.

Three things that completely change what the Vertex means in two charts with the same sign:

• The house it landed in. Vertex in house 5 and Vertex in house 8 are two kinds of meeting, one arriving through pleasure and creation, the other through a grave matter, an inheritance or a crisis. The sign is the same in both.
• Who aspects it. A Vertex alone in a corner of the chart is a footnote. A Vertex conjunct the Moon or Venus is another story.
• The whole chart around it. The Vertex is a calculated point, not a celestial body, it has no mass, no speed and does nothing on its own. It describes a place, and what happens in that place depends on who is there.

And the limit said out loud holds: astrology does not predict who anyone will marry, diagnoses nobody and decides for nobody. The Vertex describes a tendency, that part of your life arrives by event rather than by plan, and a tendency is something you can work with.
