The sign of Mercury says HOW you think; the house says WHERE that mind works. They are two different questions, and the second is almost never asked. Mercury in Gemini describes a quick, curious mind; Mercury in Gemini in house 6 describes that same mind spending the whole day solving details of work, and in house 9 describes the same mind studying for a lifetime. It is another life, with the same sign.

And here is what almost no text explains: the house of Mercury is almost always the house of your Sun or one next to it. It never moves more than 28 degrees from the Sun, and a house averages 30, so knowing where your Sun fell already narrows the answer a great deal. It is not an absolute rule, because houses are not all the same size, but it is enough to distrust any calculation that puts the two in opposite corners of the chart.

The other difference of this series is hard, and it has to be said before anything else: the house depends on the exact time of birth. The whole chart turns about one degree every four minutes, and a house boundary passes in around two hours. Whoever guesses the time does not get an approximate reading, they get somebody else's reading.

Having Mercury in house 2 means you think about money and usually earn by talking. The mind sits on what is yours: on what is worth something, what earns, what can be sold. It is not greed, it is the subject this mind naturally works on.

House 2 is the money you make yourself, the talent you have to sell and your sense of your own worth. Mercury there usually produces someone who negotiates well, calculates in their head and earns a living through some form of words.

And here is what hardly any text writes down: the worth this house talks about is not only money: it is what you think you are worth. And that is where the reading becomes useful. Mercury in 2 thinks all the time about what things are worth, including what they themselves are worth, and the difference between a comfortable life and a tight one usually lies in which of those two sums this person learned to do.

There is a second piece that changes everything: which sign that Mercury is in, the manner in which that mind works in this area. Mercury in house 2 in Taurus calculates slowly and does not get it wrong; in Gemini, it has three sources of income at once and loses track of one of them. The house says WHERE; the sign says HOW.

It shows up in how much time this person spends thinking about price, worth and the chance of earning. These are concrete signs, the kind you recognise in your own week:

• calculates in their head and knows what they have without opening the app
• earns money by speaking, writing, teaching or selling

They negotiate without embarrassment, see opportunity where others see expense and know how to turn a skill into income, and that is a specific intelligence school does not teach and that separates those who live from those who get by.

In practice this turns into three useful things: an ability to negotiate one's own price that is worth years of salary; a talent for turning knowledge into a product; and a risk calculation that avoids the financial decisions that break people.

That strength does best in trade, finance, consultancy, paid teaching, one's own business and any work where pay depends on negotiation. And it does badly in a fixed-salary post with no room to negotiate, permanent voluntary work and anywhere talking about money is treated as bad manners.

There are two, and they are opposites: the excess is the sum becoming the only measure, and the deficiency is someone who stopped using their mind in precisely this area of life. The Shelly Method reads every archetype through four faces, the light, the shadow, the excess and the deficiency, and it is the last of them that hardly any text mentions.

The excess is measuring everything by price: choosing work, relationships and free time by the sum, and calling that realism. It also shows up as a scarcity anxiety that does not obey the balance, the person can have savings and go on thinking about money every day, because the problem is no longer the money.

The deficiency is the opposite and goes unnoticed for years: the person simply does not think about this subject. Here it is the person who never did the sums. They do not know what they earn, do not know what their own hour is worth, accept the first number offered and call that detachment. House 2 goes on existing, only with nobody thinking about it, and the bill arrives as a life smaller than the talent allowed.

It is not solved by asking the person to worry less about money, the vague worry is precisely the symptom. Every house has a pair, and the pair of 2 is house 8. They are not separate themes: they are the two ends of the same pair, and the excess in one shows up as a lack in the other. It is worth forcing the reading of the other side: whoever thinks well about their own money and not about the shared kind ends up paying somebody's bill, and almost always in writing.

It matures when the person separates how much they have from how much they are worth, and that separation is worth more than any attempt to learn not to care about money. Financial competence goes on being the talent; what changes is that it stops being the measure of self-esteem.

There is a rhythm that helps understand the arc, and it belongs to Mercury itself: three or four times a year it goes retrograde, for about three weeks.
