Chiron is a small body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, discovered in 1977. It is neither a planet nor an ordinary asteroid, it is a centaur, the first of a class nobody knew existed until Charles Kowal found this one.

And its position can be measured. At its closest to the Sun it reaches 8.39 astronomical units, which is inside Saturn's orbit; at its farthest, 18.87, which is Uranus's orbit. When tradition calls Chiron a bridge between the two, that is not a pretty image: it is the geometry of the orbit, and it is the one place in astrology where the reading matches what the telescope sees.

A full orbit takes 50.07 years, measured and not rounded. That is what makes the Chiron return land at roughly the same age for everyone, and the page comes back to it further down.

Chiron's orbit is lopsided, and so it does not split those fifty years into twelve equal parts. Near the Sun it races; far away it crawls. Measured with this site's ephemeris:

• In Aries it stays 8.00 years, which is where the orbit is farthest from the Sun.
• In Virgo it stays 1.70 years, at the closest point to the Sun.
• In Aries, yours, it stays 8.00 years.

That has a consequence almost no text draws: the same point in the chart is generational in one sign and almost personal in another. Anyone with Chiron in Aries shares the sign with nine whole years of births; anyone with it in Virgo, with two.

Aries is the generational extreme of the series: anyone with Chiron here shares the mark with nearly a whole decade of people.

Chiron in Aries sits in the simplest and hardest place there is: the right to want something and go after it. Anyone with this Chiron learned early that asserting themselves was expensive. It may have been a household where a child's wanting got in the way, a sibling who took up all the room, or simply a place where whoever raised their voice got hit first. The lesson stuck: wanting is risky.

The adult result is not shyness, it is hesitation at the exact moment. The person knows what they want, gets close and pulls back; or goes in with too much force, all at once, because they waited too long. And they are the one who best recognizes that freeze in someone else: people with Chiron in Aries tend to be good at pushing others to start, even when they cannot do the same for themselves.

And here is the correction this whole series makes: Chiron is not a diagnosis. The internet sells it as “your wound”, and a text that informs someone what their wound is, is selling a consulting room without a consultation. What can be said honestly is more modest and more useful: it is the place where a person learned early that something did not work the way it worked for everyone else, and where they became good at helping whoever goes through the same thing. Not because it healed; because they know the ground.

This Chiron is recognized by the distance between what you want and what you do about it. These are concrete signs, the kind you recognise in your own week:

• You defend other people easily and yourself with a delay you could time with a stopwatch.
• Asking for something for yourself brings a shame out of all proportion to the size of the request.
• Anger comes out late, and when it does it comes with interest.
• You are the first to see what someone else should do, and the last to do yours.
• Starting alone brings a specific chill, different from the fear of failing.

Notice what that list does not say. It does not say you are cowardly or insecure, it says you learned early that wanting had a price, and you never redid that sum with today's prices.

Chiron passes through Aries three times within reach of anyone alive today: from March 31, 1918 to March 25, 1927, a span of 9.0 years; from April 1, 1968 to March 28, 1977, 9.0 years; and from April 17, 2018 to April 14, 2027, 9.0 years.

The span is longer than the stay, and the difference is not an error. Near the edge Chiron enters the sign, goes back to the previous one for a few months, and enters again, the retrograde loop. It spends 8.00 years in Aries, inside a wider span of births. Anyone born in those months of return has Chiron in the previous sign, even having been born inside the span. Only calculating the chart settles it, and that is free.

Chiron also moves backwards 39.7% of the time, measured from 1950 to 2050. That is normal and it is what produces the loop; it is not a warning about anything.

Since the orbit takes 50.07 years, the Chiron return lands at almost the same age for everyone, which is true of almost no other cycle in the chart. The Saturn return arrives at twenty-nine and a half, Jupiter's every twelve years, and the nodal one at eighteen and a half; Chiron's arrives once only, and it arrives near fifty.

With Chiron in Aries, the return at fifty tends to call in a postponed want, the thing the person always wanted and never started, and which at fifty either starts or becomes a named regret. It is almost always smaller than they imagined and more possible than it looked at thirty.

Chiron does not describe a trauma, and it should not be read as if it did. It does not say you were hurt in a specific way, nor that something in you is broken. It says there is an area where your own wanting arrives late, and that it is exactly there that you understand other people far too quickly.

The house it fell in changes the address: with Chiron in house 1 this shows up in the body and in the way you arrive; in house 10, in the career, in asking for the post that is already yours. And since Aries holds Chiron for 8.00 years, anyone born in that span has the same one, what individualizes it is the house, which depends on the exact time of birth.

A limit said out loud, because it is part of reading seriously: none of this is prediction or diagnosis. Astrology describes tendency and gives vocabulary for what a person already lives, it does not determine what will happen, it does not replace therapy, and nobody should be selling that.
